To answer you oil filter question. A screw driver poked through it.

What you described is what I call being resourceful. Engineering is more along the lines of how big a disk brake and pad do I need to stop this vehicle within 10 metres at 100km.

My wife knows my opinion about her TV watching habbits.

Based on you comments I assume you probably spend a minimum of 2 hours a day in front of a TV. Instead of wasting time in front of a television I'll do something constructive like play board games with my kids, play hockey, read on something about my field or work or one of my many hobbies. The TV makes everybody a zombie.Don't take me wrong, I have watched TV and still do at times but I find that whatever content I want to watch is available in a better format online.

I picture TV as the Matrix. If you spend more than 2 hours a day watching TV, your stuck in the Matrix and aren't living in the real world.

Don't know what kind of cars you work on but I have 3 vehicles and none of them require any engineering to work on. Unbolt and rebolt. When I repair a ball joint I don't have to worry if it's going to support the weight of the vehicle or the impact on the suppension that will occur from hitting bumps on the road. This goes from Ball Joints, to brakes, CV Joins, Transmission and Cam shaft. Most of this can be done step by step with a good old Haynes book. Heck, with little to no experience I replaced an engine in a Mazda truck within 10 hours. All I needed was a haynes book and $300 worth of tools + rental engine crane. On the other hand, to start modifying code you need to know how to program and understand the standards involved (audio/video decoding...). Anybody can program 'HELLO WOLRD' but getting involved in fixing someone else's complexe code is something far more complicated.

Don't take me wrong, your line of work does require ingenuity and I'm nowhere near able to replace people like yourself in my everyday life.

And yes, coding != engineering but designing software is a form of engineering, it's just not labelled that way. You have to make sure your changes fit within the scope of the hardware and libraries you are working with. I have close to 20 years of programming experience on different platforms and work with 5 engineers on a daily basis.

TV is a complete waste of time. There is very little programming that is worth watching. If it wasn't for having a wife that loves her shows, the only thing connected to my television would be a PBox, and an XBox 360.

Oracle and MS SQL Server are the 2 main players for corporate and enterprise needs where I reside. Hosting solutions on the other hand use MySQL, Postgres and MS SQL Server

If you target working on MS, go for MS SQL Server. It's simply the best database available that runs on MS. Oracle's database and it's benefits don't outweight it's lack of management tools and poor MS installers.

If you target working on Linux, POSTGres is your best friend. I like their nice GUI tools (Much like MS SQL) to manage the DB. If you program like I do, you just want to get shit done and don't care about figuring out what that command was for creating an Index or table (Right click, Create).

If you are targetting becoming a software developper, you only need to know how to structure your data. Managing the database if a full time job in most large corporation/enterprises.

I wasn't stating but rather suggesting he may have been used as a scapegoat. In my career I have seen one manager get fired because he was given an objective that was impossible to achieve without outsourcing. He suggested they would need to outsource the service and the director refused. In the end he failed to deliver, they fired the manager and hired another manager who ended up doing exactly what the original manager had suggested. IMHO the director is the one who failed but to save his butt he fired his manager. SCAPEGOAT!
