You clearly hate MS and I'm happy for you but you don't know anything about Windows. Linux doesn't provide what most users need which is ease of usage and maintenance. I have yet to see a trouble free distribution of Linux that can get you up and running on an old computer let alone a new computer. Yet, Windows 7 was a breeze to install on all 30 machines at my work. If drivers were required, that was also easy. In addition to that, it's been almost 3 years now and I have had ZERO issues with the OS. The issues usually stem from applications that are poorly developped. You will get that on any OS you use.
If they move to Linux they will fail. I myself am a gamer and all my friends who also game aren't techies. There is no way in hell they will be installing Linux on their computers.
If they focus their product dev to Linux it will sink the company.
I don't think you can push the negative stuff about MS off the map. I mean, every topic about MS on slashdot ends up a bash fest and isn't slashdo the center of the interwebanet?
Surface like Ipad is not for us techies. It's for my wife that browses the web while watching TV or when she needs to get something done quickly on excel to send to the office. It's a tablet when you want to sit on the couch and can turn into a laptop like device when you need to grind a little harder.
I suspect Visual Studio will allow easy transition of x86 apps to RT. They would be naive to think that is not a requirement for success. We have at least 3 major modules in our business that would benefit a move to a tablet. One could say make it a web app instead of relying on MS compatibility and that is plausible but not ideal.
I keep seeing this comparison of computers with cars and it's just not a valid one. What has changed with cars other than the manufacturing processes and the technologie that lies in them? The answer is NOTHING. - You can still choose through many options such as color, packages and add-ons. - You still have to get it serviced regularly and you can have the shop repair it when it's broken
Computers are handing more the way of calculators where you'll buy one and dispose of it when it doesn't work or doesn't do what you want. Currently we can still buy parts and assemble our own but eventually you will get to shop for a computer the same way you do a cell phone.
I just think the Metro interface makes the whole touch screen experience better and it's unitifed with the Xbox 360 experience I've had. I like how easy the Xbox is to navigate and this seems to be coming reality for MS desktops.
I concur. I love Apple, MS, Android, Linux and many other OS but from where I stand only MS can provide me a complete solution for the budget and type of userb ase we have. MS catters their products to the people in charge of the IT/Software decisions and enable us in the process. Apple doesn't care about me and my need to keep things in control. On the other hand Apple is great for my wife and kids.
What I find about slashdot is there seems to be a very big population of people that work in very niche areas where non MS systems are predominent and in turn assume MS is crap, a bad choice or isn't a popular choice. This isn't true. Production people still heavilly rely on MS. There's more to production environments than browsing, excel and powerpoint.
I could keep going but I'm annoyed by all these empty arguments against the different platforms. I feel people just write without knowing anything about the platforms they write against.
The intent is not to backup all your porn and movies remotly. It's to backup critical data as well as provide remote access to some files. I strongly believe in a combination of local backups and remote backups. E.g. I backup my project data, programming files and emails to a remote storage. I also have a local backup wich is everything. My remote backup is just over 35gb and is synched and keeps a file version history so I can even go back in time.
You ignorant for saying what you said. You complain about people who lived before you and you will complain about the people after you. Your comment is garbage.
We are looking at moving to a facility double the size of ours. My hit list is: - 10x10 server room. All wiring for phones and network will land there - CAT 5E or Cat 6 cabling throughout for phone and data - Dropping the old nortel phones for VOIP (internal only) phones. Easier to configure and has tones more features - 4 drops in every office (You never know when they'll need it and they'll try to cramp 2 people in there - Roaming wireless AP through the plant (we will be going to 60000 sqft so I have 6 of them)
I'm not going to talk about electrical and other facilities since electricians have a good handle on what companies need today (usually 2 double outlets per room and 20amp circuit for microwaves in lunch room)...
Well, if this is true Google just proved their just another corporation looking out for their own interest. The user just happens to be the product they sell. Of course, I already knew this but I know lots of users out there think Google is out there for charity or some form of.
It's clear the electric car technology out there is stll too primitive and too expensive to handle most users vehicle requirement. I think we need to continu on the track GM has been with the Volt. The idea of a vehicle that can charge quicly on 120V and has a tiny gas generator to charge as you drive is amazing. The volt can satisfy most users needs. If we continue developping those vehicles it will automatically allow continued research to store energy in batteries while allowing us to reduce our carbon footprint.
I disagree with the BETA comment as in most enterprises I have worked in, there comes a point where new internal software needs to be tested by the actual users for proper feedback to be received before final deployment. Refusing to install BETA versions in a controlled test environment is just plain dumb and hinders the progress of such project.
I tell ya, this new generation who doesn't care to optmizing anything. Lets just write the crappiest software we can and throw more money at the problem...
And no, not everyone will have fiber to their home. They may have 20mbs internet via copper but they won't have fiber unless everybody chips in $1000 per home (Not even sure that would cover it)
Your response isn't factoring everything. Instant water heaters are significantly more efficient in situations where you don't use an abondance of hot water. You also don't need to set the temperature to 180, instead you set it to 115 or 120. Don't forget the other advantages such as additional space and never ending source of hot water. Many people also forget to factor in the hydro used for venting the gases.
Big game companies don't want consoles being easier to hack for easier game piracy. This may shy away some of the more serious game makers. On the other hand, MMO, RTS and other such games can finally find themselves in the console world.

Ask Apple. People are more interested in what the next smart phone feature will be than what's going on in the world of science.

If they treat you in a certain way that makes them a jerk, they are a jerk. Doesn't matter if they have a disorder or not.
Stopping at a green light doesn't make up for the red I burned earlier.

yes maybe, but users still end up paying more. If you live in the city getting an Android phone will cost you at least $10 less a month on your bill.
As for the google charge for the maps, I assume that was on their plan revenu, not hardware sales.

You are very gollible if you think the founders didn't start google so they could get rich. Welcome to capitalism where nobody does anything for free.

You nailed it!
I'm happy I wasn't the only one who noticed this.
No offense but when did people stop being resourceful? This doesn't seem to be a question that required a forum to address it.
If the people watching kiddie porn end up scammed, I say it's cool!
