  13. So, now the shoe is on the other foot? on SIP vs. Skype, Making the "Open" Choice · · Score: 3, Insightful

So - it's cool if others donate their time (and other resources) to give you something for free (SIP - both the protocol, but also a LOT of the programs for it), but if YOU have to give something of your resources (like bandwidth) for free - well, that's something COMPLETELY different.

Somehow I don't see how that works.

Sure, Skype is proprietary - but I've never paid anything for it (except bandwith), and it works just fine for me, so - to me at least - it's free (monetary, not libre). SIP - well, never tried anything that worked just as well as Skype, so it's libre, but it's not free to me (costs me and others resources like their and my time to get it working).

I don't really see the difference (but I'm not a fanatic proponent of Libre software).

  14. Why not flywheels for energy storage? on The Doom of Wired Peripherals · · Score: 1

People constantly complain that their batteries only last "a few months" (think I saw a few weeks in posts as well), and that rechargable batteries sucks too yada yada yada.

Why not flywheels (ignoring that they probably don't make them THAT small yet)?

For most things it only needs to keep a working charge for 8 hours a day and can use upwards of 16 hours to recharge (regular office use at least). Most flywheels I've read about (for electricity at least) last for years and thus probably outlasts your current equipment anyway.

Think about it - sure, the flywheel might have to be bigger than regular AA or AAA batteries, but by how much?

And they'd be more expensive - that's a given. But seeing as flywheels will outlast chemical batteries by a mile, that's something I could live with.

  20. Re:New TV format: 45-min. drama serial? on Why Have Movies Been So Bad Lately? · · Score: 1

Speaking of ADD ... have you ever used a stop watch during a typical US TV evening? Use one to time the amount of time that shows the actual programs and another one to time the amount of adds shown.

I'm from a country where the tv stations aren't allowed to have commercial breaks in their programs. They can show commercials BETWEEN programs. We have a few sattelite stations that broadcast from England I think, but they usually limit their commercials to 5 mins every 30 minutes if the show is 60 minutes+, or 3 minutes ever 15 if it's less than 60 minutes (rough guesses here).

This results in some rather interesting shows when we are shown US shows. Aparently you guys have commercial breaks every 3 to 5 minutes? INCLUDING the "stay tuned after the break where ..." and "before the break we were talking ..." parts?

If that's true, it's no fucking wonder every kid and their dog has ADD in the US - they've never ever had to pay attention to anything for more than 200 seconds.

Why not build a custom car, that simply "abuses" the high ground clearance on SUV's and the like? Something that simply slides under those types of cars and makes them airborne?

Since most of the kinetic energy from the other car will remain as forward momentum, your car "just" has to absorb a bit of energy, and you do have seat belts and airbags to make you even safer.

You end up with two nice effects:
    1) SUV crashes, takes most of the brunt and hopefully explodes in a nice fireball.
    2) SUV driver might end up severely injured or dead along with their passengers

Enough of those crashes, and people will start shunning the crappy SUV's
