    They mentioned it was a S E C R E T meeting. Last I checked, things weren't secret if you told people about them, hence you can't issue statements about secret meetings.

    So - if one (or more) of the attending people felt it was rediculous, (s)he could easily have told The Register about it.

    Sadly we use some weird (not to mention stupid) system for time.

    24 hours in a day (why? what makes 2 x 12 so useful?)
    60 minutes in an hour (why? what makes 5 x 12 so useful?)
    60 seconds in a minute (why? what makes 5 x 12 so useful?)
    Why are we using 10ths or 100ths of a second, when obviously we should be using 60ths of a second? Or should it be 12ths or 24ths? Why not 42nds? 3rds?

    Were the people who made up the time-system freaky mutants with 6 fingers on each hand?

    Sure ... pull out the 'free speech' card.

    Let's see - if you stand on a street corner somewhere and tell people what you think, they have a simple choice: "stay" or "leave". If they leave and you follow them, I think your action changes from 'free speech' to 'stalking'.

    If you send me email, that I have no interest in, then I can't just leave, because you will stalk me constantly with your 'html-open-pop-up-windows-from-hell-email' and your 'click-here-to-opt-out-but-we-will-really-use-this -to-keep-track-of-active-email-addresses-option-fr om-hell'.

    Here's a nice little 'go to jail'-card for your selection. If that won't help, I also have a 'get a free beating'-card for you, that you can exchange at every respectable store in the world.

    By all means, please do. Show us ungratefull people, that we can't possibly live without such highly acclaimed talk shows as Ricky Lake, Jerry Springer and Oprah. Show us that we can't survive without McDonalds, Burger King and american cigarrettes; as for Coca Cola - well ... it's not easy, but we'll try to survive.

    Computers - guess we'll have to settle for the Via C3, but hey - no more Microsoft ... YAY! Linux and BSD (the one made in Canada) will be the law of the land. We'll have ATi and PowerVR video-cards, but they're getting quite good now a days.

    No more american gas-guzzling cars, no more exploding american tires ...

    All in all, I think I could survive without all the stuff we get from the US ... after all - there is Open Cola ...

    I knew it! There HAD to be something wrong with the whole "moon" idea. I mean "man in the moon" - what kind of bullshit is THAT?

    I actually believe there are several "moon" satellites orbiting the earth, otherwise we wouldn't be able to see it in Europe, when it is hovering over the US. Damn liberals. Not only do they spy on their own people, but also on us europeans, who have done nothing against them.

    I'll bet that the stars are surveillance satellites as well - I mean, they're always at the same place at night, night after night, year after year. Damn liberals!

    It's not some secret government agency ... it's the mafia. They want to build a casino in New York, and the World Trade Center just happened to be a great location for a casino. And by hijacking a couple of planes and smashing them into the buildings, they didn't have to pay big money to take down the WTC ...

    Just to make a do do on your p&b-sandwich - Pakistan is rules by the military, and has been so for the last two years. The current president [insert strange unpronouncable name] came to power after a military coup.

    Pakistan is also one of the very few countries that recognize the Taliban as the true government of Afghanistan.

    Not saying that Pakistan should be bombed, just that you (as well as the warmongering idiots you were talking about) should check up on facts.

    As we've no doubt heard from a couple of sources, the authorities are installing safeguards that (to some extent) is going to lessen our rights, like the right to not having other people read our emails and other things (chances of people of middle eastern descent getting to rent a flight simulator is probably somewhere between slim and "snowball in hell" right now).

    That's all fine and dandy in the short run, but how long should we (if at all) accept this as citizens in "free" countries of the world? 1 month? 6 months? 1 year? 2 years? For ever?

    Which is more important - protection from potential terrorists or protection from potential abuse from the authorities?

    The computer gaming industry is gonna get blamed for this. I can just hear it now:
    "It was a couple of kids, who had played lots of flight simulator games, like Microsoft Flight Simulator, and thought they could fly for real. This scourge must be stopped, and games must be BANNED!"

    On another, just as ridiculous note, once again this shows just how stupid it is to have, of all things, life preservers on an airplane. Why not put parachutes on boats as well?

    Think abut it for a second. Why wouldn't you want digital rights management built into your computer equipment? What? Oh - you want to play your DVD's one Linux. Get a decent operating system, one where you have to PAY for your right to use the stuff you buy.

    What? You think, you should be allowed to do what you want, with the stuff that you own? Get real - this is the 21st century - you can't just do stuff, because you want to. What's next? You don't want to pay for using your computer? What are you? Some kind of communist?
