Back in the old days of Linux, circa 1994, it was precisely that model that was used for libraries. Back then Linux used the COFF (or a.out) executable format that required libraries be pinned to fixed base addresses, there was also a registry that assigned base addresses to libraries. It was a complete pain in the ass. When Linux moved to the ELF executable format, we got relocatable shared libraries and I don't think anyone seriously wants to go back. The prelinker sounds like a pretty good compromise to me.
You left out the most important reason why residential phone service is less expensive than business service - residential service is subsidized by federal tax money. The phone company recovers most of the difference in cost.
I checked the box that said "always trust content from Microsoft Corporation." Therefore, only Microsoft's real certificate will be accepted by my machine. Even if the FBI forces Verisign to issue an impostor certificate, it will be detected and thwarted.
I do not think that means what I think you think it means.
You are wrong in a couple of ways: 1. What makes you think the FBI wouldn't be able to get a valid signature on Magic Lantern if they so desired? 2. You haven't actually denied non-properly signed software, you just made it so that properly signed software can be installed without you knowing about it. 3. The signature part is only checked by the windows installer service. You can put software on a machine without using the installer service. The faint sound of NIMDA and Code-Red poinding on my firewall is proof of that.
would have to be
this, a posting of remarks by a certain US Senator John Ashcroft. Included in his comments are a plea to lift the ban on the export of strong crypto from the US, that US Citizens should always have the right to use strong crypto free from government key escrow, and that laws pertaining to copyrights and the internet must balance the needs of content creators with the rights of end users.

The big problem that I see is that throughout the world there's maybe five or six people that would actually want to own a watch like this. Unless they all get together for some sort of Stupid Watch Owner Support Group it will be dificult to infect them all.
Hey, it's not my idea. I think it's a looney idea too. I was just pointing out that a company with an established ballistic parachute product for light planes thinks it will work on a 747 as well.
Also, the way they were planning on deploying the chutes on an airliner, it wouldn't just add drag, it would add drag and lift. When fully filled, the parachutes looked more like a parasails, essentially adding a bunch of wing area.
There are NO such parachutes. Let's do some real simple calcs. I believe a standard human parachute is 28 feet in diameter, for a human weighing 200 pounds. A fully loaded 747 is around 800,000 pounds, 4000 times as much. Let's see, square root of 4000 is roughly 64, and 64 * 28 = 1770 feet -- ONE KILOMETER!
Right! And Wrong. There is a company called Ballistic Recovery Systems that makes parachute systems for small general aviation planes. The system are designed to slow the descent of a powerless plane enough to make the impact survivable. They have proposed a similar system for airliner consisting of five 1600 pound chutes. The goal is not to let the airliner fall vertically, but rather to cancel enough weight to slow the airliner's best glide speed. Slowing the glide speed greatly increases the distance it can glide and makes the subsequent landing slower and more survivable.
Anyone know of a good spot to watch in the San Francisco Bay area? My first though was that the top of Mount Diablo would be far enough away from the light pollution to see it well, but the park closes at sunset.
The cartoon there was another elemenet - Tick is looking at is face reflected in the back of a spoon. The distorted reflection looks all mean and fierce and Tick is clearly mesmerized by it.
"Villans, I say to you now - KNOCK OFF ALL THAT EVIL"
"I know, I'll name you Speak, 'cause that's what you do!"
"Not in the face! Not in the face!"
Anyway, the live action show is better than I thought it would be. But Mr. Warburton needs to be one notch less "Jonny Bravo" and one notch more "Forrest Gump". And they need to modify his costume to mask the eyes like the cartoon.
It's not a matter of porting - KDE already runs on Solaris and has for some time. This is about being included as a part of Solaris. KDE will likey never be included this way because "The Mighty Sun Hath Spoken And The Mighty Sun Hath Chosen GNOME."

News Flash: Traditional photos just as easy to alter as digital photos. Film at 11.
Seriously, the availabity of high resolution scanners and slide printers means it's just as easy to scan and alter and reprint a standard photo as it is to alter on that started digital.
Actually, a much better alternative to both is NUT. NUT is both UPS brand agnostic and OS agnostic. It's really nice to be able to monitor 3 different brands of UPSs on four operating systems with the same software.
Region 1 to Rule them All,

Region 1 to Bring the All,
and in the darkness bind them.
Sounds about right...

I will be the judge of how much disk space I need on my desktop thankyouverymuch. I say "keep making 'em bigger!"

Real men don't need no wussy ethernet cards either. A voltmeter and battery is all you need.

Fair enough. I didn't get your meaning on the first read, but it makes sense now.
I don't think anyone is serious trying to suggest that USB and Fibre Channel are competing standards. Prehaps you meant Firewire?

Who the hell needs all that bloat? All you really need is netcat. Or are you trying to say you can't do IMAP over SSL in your head?
Another nice suprise would be to have posting at +1 cost a point a karma.

Unfortunately that would violate the DMCA.
Congratulations, you're now a terrorist.

Quick! Somebody better tell IBM's AS/400 people that they're selling a machine that doesn't exist. Horizontal microcode indeed!
Cockroaches as a species may survive a muclear war, but a single cockroach perched at ground zero of a nuclear strike is a dead bug.
