Also, many Starbucks stores are in strip malls with their backs to residential neighborhoods... it'd be a nice way to save $10/month if you happened to live within 1,000 feet or so.
I live on Long Island, where there are many Starbucks around. Of all the ones I've been to, I could barely stand 5 feet outside of the store and get a connection. 1,000 feet definitely wouldn't make it. They're not trying to get a whole area, just their store.
I am a Windows user so I am not sure, but it seems like these 30 seconds previews are from the beginning of the song. Something I noticed with Amazon.com's 30 second previews is that even though they are pretty low quality, they usually focus at an exciting or otherwise good part of a song. Perhaps Apple could take a cue from that.
RTFA. The worms were in containers. They probably wouldn't have got on the other parts. And I'm no scientist, but I don't think antigravity makes anybody mutate.
I don't think they would have to rewrite the whole game. Actually, the code for multiplayer was left in GTA3 for PC, and some people took advantage of that and created a hack to allow for multiplayer. I don't think they'd be looking to make it an MMORPG where everyone walks around in one huge world, but rather something where 2-4 can do missions against each other or together, race each other, have a demolition dirby, a deathmatch, etc.
That's very interesting. I think over the years we will start seeing judges that are more tech savvy and are part of our "Internet" generation -- people that possibly know about open source, free software, etc. and what they mean. While judges of today can probably be able to understand these concepts, growing up with them is a different story. I think that in the future, most cases will side in the file sharing company's, or even file sharing user's, favor.
I don't get my jollies getting hammered for ads. I don't really think it's bragging about how they shove ads down your throat. I think it's more about how they target ads to people. Plus, you are totally exaggerating the ads. I don't know what kind of pages you go to, but the ones I go to don't feature a monkey jumping all over the screen asking me to punch him. I also find it quite amusing that you say moving to Linux solved your problems, considering that there are programs for Windows that probably do similar, if not better jobs of removing in-line ads as well as popups. The program I have, Ad Muncher, takes up 178kb on my computer. And what's 178kb when you have 200gb?
I'm sorry, but I can't take this. What the hell does your response, which was basically pointless bragging about how you can't see ads (which isn't a huge feat to accomplish), have anything to do with a person informatively explaining how The Times' ads work? Especially when you posted the same thing about 2 posts before this. Please, we don't need your pointless babbling.
A dedicated DVD player capable of playing these DVDs would not probably have to have those specs. They are designed just to play HD-DVD, which a computer is not, and therefore don't have to waste resources for other things such as "SETI@HOME". Think about this: It is not easy to watch a regular DVD with surround sound on a PC on something below 500mhz.
Phone numbers provide anonymity. Some people don't like to be looked up and called, which is why they make their number unlisted, or they get a cell phone. You could argue that those things are unnecessary, but it has become part of our lifestyle. Besides, every cell phone, and some wired phones have built in address books. I think that phone numbers are here to stay, unless the whole world wants a change.
How about a rechargable battery, you coward? While I must admit the battery life on the GBA is incredible, god knows how much money I've spent on batteries. So there.
1. Go open source 2. Stop making money 3. ??? 4. Profit!

terrorism has never been defeated by war, just ask the British in Northern Ireland.
That's why he said hopefully. We will probably never finish off terrorism but we can lower it to a point where no one gives a crap about it. I don't see communism or nazism as a threat to the United States, even though they still "exist."
RTFA. This article is from FORBES.COM. It was not directed towards the users of Slashdot, it was for the general public. The journalists write things like this so it is easier for Joe Sixpack to read. They could include an analysis of the GPL, it's strengths and weakesses, or they could give a quick blurb about it.
Insert wireless cards in rental cars? Sure, and they will plug right into that Windows/Linux computer that's built into every car! Your idea is interesting, but impractical. It would probably cost tons more money to implement this idea then people would pay to get this "special feature," especially if they're not going to be in the area.
Let me ask you something. Why the hell would John Ashcroft be in a helicopter trying to spy on your fucking computer? Honestly, joke or not, this is just stupid. You're complaining about paranoia? You think a government official is worrying about some loser with crusty pants downloading, dare I say it, illegally copied movies? Give me a break. This is a positive feature, not some governement conspiracy.
When you make an argument like that, you have to take both sides. If the military was transferring crucial information to your safety, information that would determine whether you lived or died, you would continue to broadcast your "information" to various parts of your property?
If more citizens took your attitude, we'd have a country full of whining, bumbling idiots, like other countries the United States deals with do. However, we have risen above that, and that's what makes us America.
I don't know about anybody else, but I do not have tons of money to spend per month on a wireless service. In fact, anything over $40 is too much for me. All of these services are just too expensive. Most services now providing data give you something like 20 megabytes for almost a hundred dollars. That's ridiculous. If this service wants to work I should be getting DSL/Cable equivalent speeds, and have nearly unlimited data.
With WiFi, I can just find open networks and use their internet on my Pocket PC. The price? $50 for a WiFi card, and $200 for a Dell Axim. Now, I don't get national coverage, but honestly, it's not a big deal to me, and if these services want to get to the average Joe, then they're going to figure out how to do it cheaper or do some serious price lowering.

Why do you say that? The Columbia shuttle was in space. It broke up during reentry, not leaving Earth.

How about a keyboard or a mouse?
Or a monitor, if we're going to be wiseguys.

I'll do it. E-mail me. By selling these, please note that you are making money off of the very systems that you protest. But hey, I get a cheap PS2!
That would be emigrating out, foolish coward.

That doesn't look like it's compatable with the Palm OS. It only says Pocket PC 2002 and mentions Tablet PCs as well I think.
Are you sure that setup would work? Have you tried going online using your Palm with your T68? (And if so, what cell phone service/plan do you use?)
That page you link to says $60, but if you click the link below that (More info >) it leads to here Memorex MVD-2028, where it is listed for $119.67.
