Their goals were clear, there was a defined end state to which they were working and therefore their success could be measured. OWS on the other hand has not stated end state to which they would like things moved. They simply protest everything, and therefore will never obtain concrete action on anything.

Every single one of them has told me about the training they've had to go to regardless of how high or low their position is to learn about fraud, how to detect it, and what they have to report. The Mall of America was designed with the foreknowledge that people moving through it would generate heat. When I was working a volunteer event there a number of years ago the community relations contact we had was cheerfully explaining that they typically don't heat the mall. She cited a figure of 100 people generates about the same thermal output as an average household furnace. Which puts into context why a party in a house gets so warm... Most office towers in northern latitudes tend to heat primarily around the edges of the building where heat bleeds out of the tower through the windows. Otherwise you may find that the interior of the build could actually be receiving cool air to dissipate the body heat of the office workers.
So, while I applaud the re-use of body heat for something useful, it's definitely not a new concept. Architects and engineers have been accounting for it and sometimes harnessing it for years.
I mean seriously this reeks of paranoia. There's a very valid reason for banks cracking down on OWS. In the USA there are really only two ways to legally create a bank account. One is as an individual the other is through an incorporation. Individuals can obviously have multiple co-signers such as in a family. And, incorporated entities can be businesses, non-profits, cities, etc... OWS organized itself as the antithesis of any incorporated entity. There were no official leaders, no board or leadership who was legally responsible for filing taxes, nothing. Their use of banks to collect donations, organize and pool funds, and then disperse them therefore broke pretty much all the laws that were put in place to stop groups like organized crime and terrorists from utilizing banks in the same way. The folks who work at banks can lose their jobs and face criminal prosecution if they don't report activity that looks exactly like what OWS was doing with the bank accounts they were opening. So please, use your brain and think things through before you post an article like this that simply reeks of paranoia. You may not like the system or the laws, but they exist, and the banks and FBI are simply following them.
My employer has a sick leave policy called Reasonable Time Off. None of us has sick days. There's no pool of time that you have to worry about. If you're sick, you can (supposedly) simply take the day off and stay home. People do actually use it. A lot of us will continue to do work from home, but log off for stretches of time to nap/rest/whatever. But, it does help having this policy. We can even use it for simple things such as medical checkups and dental procedures/cleanings.
Since almost all of our meetings now have conference bridges attached to them it's quite easy for folks to check in from home and still attend meetings they feel they absolutely need to attend. Couple that with our secure remote access tools and people can still be productive when they stay home if they choose. This is especially helpful when a parent stays home with a sick child.
Personally I know that I typically tend to get miserably sick for a day or two and need to rest. Then I'm usually feeling a little better, but not great, for a day or two. So being able to stay home as needed and work from home when I feel up to it helps me not feel pressured into coming into the office and getting others sick too. Plus the couple times I've had to have surgery I did not feel bad in the slightest that I actually took the time off of work to recuperate that I needed.
Managers around here seem to trust employees for the most part. But, if it looks like someone is abusing the policy they may raise questions. Most people I work with are pretty responsible about it though because they know how good of a benefit this really is. And, none of us wants to be forced into a PTO type system.
To give you an idea of the scale of this benefit, we employ nearly twenty thousand people in our HQ facilities around the metro area. With a single floor of one of our office towers easily holding in the neighborhood of a hundred people. Our downtown towers are all interconnected by a skyway system that includes many other buildings as well. So one person coming into the office sick has the potential to affect hundreds or thousands of other people. If we can reduce that even a bit it helps everyone out.
But, I just pulled out my original Koss satellite speakers from my first 286 and hooked them up to my computer at work. Forgot I had them, but they still work after all these years.

Around here our managers are automatically one paygrade higher than than their employees, and more often than not the managers have little to no technical background. And, the further up the management food chain you go the less tech experience or knowledge you find. Most laptops these days have a recovery image on a separate partition of the hard drive. It would not be beyond belief that the spyware the agent used injected itself into the recovery partition so it would re-install itself. My guess is that this particular agent was not a technical expert himself and probably just asked a coworker who was technical what he could use to monitor his child's use of the computer. When he handed the machine off to someone to restore it he may not have told them exactly what he put on it, and if they then used the recovery partition, well... you have this scenario.
You've never had a coworker ask you for help with something they can't figure out? It happens all the time around here, had many a non-techie bring in a laptop that needs a little TLC and someone will do it over their lunch or bring it home and do it. In the case of the FBI folks doing this they could even have been using it as a training opportunity for a rookie tech.
Personally my observations show that smartphones break at about the same rate no matter who manufactured them. Most of the current generation of devices use Gorilla Glass for their screens which is rather durable, but all glass will fail when sufficient force is applied in a small enough area. That's a lesson I learned in fire fighter training. We learned that a flat bladed screwdriver was far more effective at breaking a window than a hammer. The same is true of a smartphone screen when it falls onto the ground. If it impacts a sharp edged pebble on the way down it's more likely to break than if it hits the carpet. It's not a guarantee one way or the other, but it does change the probability.
That being said I've owned multiple Apple products and will admit some are designed very well and seem very durable while others have had major design flaws. My five year old MacBook Pro is an ideal example of looks over durability. The associate who sold me the device admitted that her own screen was damaged from the inside by the glowing apple on the back of the display. Apparently the hooks that hold that plastic piece in place can scrape the inside of the monitor if you're not careful. And, the chassis was fairly weak getting dented moderately at one point. Though I believe Apple learned from that and came up with the one piece machined aluminum chassis for their laptops after that. They do seem to learn from some of their mistakes in product engineering, though it can take time.
I do find the whole argument over which device is better and the hotheadedness of the fan boys on both sides to be somewhat amusing. Both product lines have their advantages and disadvantages.
As for Apple's motivations, I think one thing many people forget about is Apple's own history of being relegated to the background. Apple really kick started the personal computer business with the Apple PC. Then just as they were trying to engineer what would eventually become the Macintosh Microsoft came along and undercut them with Windows. I think Apple's management team, especially under Jobs, was very afraid of this same thing happening again with Android. Going thermonuclear on every competing product was probably a major overreaction but considering how Apple almost disappeared at one point it certainly could be an understandable reaction. Ultimately speaking though it hurts everyone involved except for the lawyers.
Actually when the iPhone first came out I recall RIM started trying to sue Apple over email push delivery to try and block Apple from obtaining a large business user client base. They were able to make technical changes to the iPhone push delivery model to get out from underneath that particular patent. So, pointing out RIM as an example may not be the best option.
Nonsense there's one option that works 100% of the time. Turn off your computer, unplug it from the wall, remove the hard drive, and smash it with a hammer and you're guaranteed 100% effective protection against computer viruses. Note, if you ever put in a new hard drive and plug the computer in/turn it on you will void your coverage.
Actually if you read some of the comments from the CEO. He admitted at townhalls with the employees that there was plenty of blame for the company's current circumstances to go all around (including management and the unions.) He was brought in during the bankruptcy to restructure the company and get it back on its feet. It was hemorrhaging money and he laid the case out for everyone. Surprisingly the Teamsters actually agreed to the pay cuts because they understood they'd be without jobs entirely otherwise. The bakers refused to acknowledge that the company was in such dire straights. They seemed to think management was bluffing, well in this case management wasn't.
That being said, I've been on the receiving end of a pay cut before and it sucks. But, it was better for me at that time to have a pay cut and search for another job than to have gone entirely without a paycheck. As much as it would've hurt financially the bakers should've seen reason. 90% of a paycheck is definitely better than no paycheck.
I can do you one better there. When I moved into one apartment I plugged my tv into the wall expecting to be hooked up to the building antenna. Instead, I found I had Comcast. So I didn't say anything and just enjoyed the service expecting it to go away when a tech realized it was hooked up. About three months went by and a Comcast tech showed up at my door asking if I'd like to have their service, I said no thanks. Grand larceny is not necessarily based on the resale value of the item. It can also be based on the original purchase price of the item. If I purchased a brand new $600 non-contract cellphone I'm still out $600. I'm not out the $300 that someone else was able to sell the phone for. If on the other hand someone stole a painting from my house that I paid $5 for a garage sale and I later discovered it was an original Monet then that too could be considered grand larceny because the known current value of the item is higher. A good attorney could argue it both ways quite effectively.

When I was working a volunteer event there a number of years ago the community relations contact we had was cheerfully explaining that they typically don't heat the mall. She cited a figure of 100 people generates about the same thermal output as an average household furnace. Which puts into context why a party in a house gets so warm... Most office towers in northern latitudes tend to heat primarily around the edges of the building where heat bleeds out of the tower through the windows. Otherwise you may find that the interior of the build could actually be receiving cool air to dissipate the body heat of the office workers.
So, while I applaud the re-use of body heat for something useful, it's definitely not a new concept. Architects and engineers have been accounting for it and sometimes harnessing it for years.
I mean seriously this reeks of paranoia. There's a very valid reason for banks cracking down on OWS. In the USA there are really only two ways to legally create a bank account. One is as an individual the other is through an incorporation. Individuals can obviously have multiple co-signers such as in a family. And, incorporated entities can be businesses, non-profits, cities, etc... OWS organized itself as the antithesis of any incorporated entity. There were no official leaders, no board or leadership who was legally responsible for filing taxes, nothing. Their use of banks to collect donations, organize and pool funds, and then disperse them therefore broke pretty much all the laws that were put in place to stop groups like organized crime and terrorists from utilizing banks in the same way. The folks who work at banks can lose their jobs and face criminal prosecution if they don't report activity that looks exactly like what OWS was doing with the bank accounts they were opening. So please, use your brain and think things through before you post an article like this that simply reeks of paranoia. You may not like the system or the laws, but they exist, and the banks and FBI are simply following them.
My employer has a sick leave policy called Reasonable Time Off. None of us has sick days. There's no pool of time that you have to worry about. If you're sick, you can (supposedly) simply take the day off and stay home. People do actually use it. A lot of us will continue to do work from home, but log off for stretches of time to nap/rest/whatever. But, it does help having this policy. We can even use it for simple things such as medical checkups and dental procedures/cleanings.
Since almost all of our meetings now have conference bridges attached to them it's quite easy for folks to check in from home and still attend meetings they feel they absolutely need to attend. Couple that with our secure remote access tools and people can still be productive when they stay home if they choose. This is especially helpful when a parent stays home with a sick child.
Personally I know that I typically tend to get miserably sick for a day or two and need to rest. Then I'm usually feeling a little better, but not great, for a day or two. So being able to stay home as needed and work from home when I feel up to it helps me not feel pressured into coming into the office and getting others sick too. Plus the couple times I've had to have surgery I did not feel bad in the slightest that I actually took the time off of work to recuperate that I needed.
Managers around here seem to trust employees for the most part. But, if it looks like someone is abusing the policy they may raise questions. Most people I work with are pretty responsible about it though because they know how good of a benefit this really is. And, none of us wants to be forced into a PTO type system.
To give you an idea of the scale of this benefit, we employ nearly twenty thousand people in our HQ facilities around the metro area. With a single floor of one of our office towers easily holding in the neighborhood of a hundred people. Our downtown towers are all interconnected by a skyway system that includes many other buildings as well. So one person coming into the office sick has the potential to affect hundreds or thousands of other people. If we can reduce that even a bit it helps everyone out.
But, I just pulled out my original Koss satellite speakers from my first 286 and hooked them up to my computer at work. Forgot I had them, but they still work after all these years.
Unfortunately I think too many managers seem to agree with your sarcastic comment. Around here our managers are automatically one paygrade higher than than their employees, and more often than not the managers have little to no technical background. And, the further up the management food chain you go the less tech experience or knowledge you find. To the point where our current CIO sounds like the gal in "The IT Crowd" talking about the internet...
Most laptops these days have a recovery image on a separate partition of the hard drive. It would not be beyond belief that the spyware the agent used injected itself into the recovery partition so it would re-install itself. My guess is that this particular agent was not a technical expert himself and probably just asked a coworker who was technical what he could use to monitor his child's use of the computer. When he handed the machine off to someone to restore it he may not have told them exactly what he put on it, and if they then used the recovery partition, well... you have this scenario.
You've never had a coworker ask you for help with something they can't figure out? It happens all the time around here, had many a non-techie bring in a laptop that needs a little TLC and someone will do it over their lunch or bring it home and do it. In the case of the FBI folks doing this they could even have been using it as a training opportunity for a rookie tech.
Personally my observations show that smartphones break at about the same rate no matter who manufactured them. Most of the current generation of devices use Gorilla Glass for their screens which is rather durable, but all glass will fail when sufficient force is applied in a small enough area. That's a lesson I learned in fire fighter training. We learned that a flat bladed screwdriver was far more effective at breaking a window than a hammer. The same is true of a smartphone screen when it falls onto the ground. If it impacts a sharp edged pebble on the way down it's more likely to break than if it hits the carpet. It's not a guarantee one way or the other, but it does change the probability.
That being said I've owned multiple Apple products and will admit some are designed very well and seem very durable while others have had major design flaws. My five year old MacBook Pro is an ideal example of looks over durability. The associate who sold me the device admitted that her own screen was damaged from the inside by the glowing apple on the back of the display. Apparently the hooks that hold that plastic piece in place can scrape the inside of the monitor if you're not careful. And, the chassis was fairly weak getting dented moderately at one point. Though I believe Apple learned from that and came up with the one piece machined aluminum chassis for their laptops after that. They do seem to learn from some of their mistakes in product engineering, though it can take time.
I do find the whole argument over which device is better and the hotheadedness of the fan boys on both sides to be somewhat amusing. Both product lines have their advantages and disadvantages.
As for Apple's motivations, I think one thing many people forget about is Apple's own history of being relegated to the background. Apple really kick started the personal computer business with the Apple PC. Then just as they were trying to engineer what would eventually become the Macintosh Microsoft came along and undercut them with Windows. I think Apple's management team, especially under Jobs, was very afraid of this same thing happening again with Android. Going thermonuclear on every competing product was probably a major overreaction but considering how Apple almost disappeared at one point it certainly could be an understandable reaction. Ultimately speaking though it hurts everyone involved except for the lawyers.
Actually when the iPhone first came out I recall RIM started trying to sue Apple over email push delivery to try and block Apple from obtaining a large business user client base. They were able to make technical changes to the iPhone push delivery model to get out from underneath that particular patent. So, pointing out RIM as an example may not be the best option.
Well if you're not flying in null sec or WH space you can theoretically play casually... But, it's a completely different experience.
Nonsense there's one option that works 100% of the time. Turn off your computer, unplug it from the wall, remove the hard drive, and smash it with a hammer and you're guaranteed 100% effective protection against computer viruses. Note, if you ever put in a new hard drive and plug the computer in/turn it on you will void your coverage.
Actually if you read some of the comments from the CEO. He admitted at townhalls with the employees that there was plenty of blame for the company's current circumstances to go all around (including management and the unions.) He was brought in during the bankruptcy to restructure the company and get it back on its feet. It was hemorrhaging money and he laid the case out for everyone. Surprisingly the Teamsters actually agreed to the pay cuts because they understood they'd be without jobs entirely otherwise. The bakers refused to acknowledge that the company was in such dire straights. They seemed to think management was bluffing, well in this case management wasn't.
That being said, I've been on the receiving end of a pay cut before and it sucks. But, it was better for me at that time to have a pay cut and search for another job than to have gone entirely without a paycheck. As much as it would've hurt financially the bakers should've seen reason. 90% of a paycheck is definitely better than no paycheck.
I can do you one better there. When I moved into one apartment I plugged my tv into the wall expecting to be hooked up to the building antenna. Instead, I found I had Comcast. So I didn't say anything and just enjoyed the service expecting it to go away when a tech realized it was hooked up. About three months went by and a Comcast tech showed up at my door asking if I'd like to have their service, I said no thanks. Sure enough a little while later my tv was no longer receiving Comcast and I was on the building antenna. Another three months goes by and another Comcast tech showed up at my door and claimed I was receiving Comcast illegally. I told him no I wasn't I only go the over the air channels, he looked rather confused. Less than an hour later my tv suddenly was receiving Comcast again. Mislabeled wires? Techs that don't know what they're doing? I'm not sure, but it was entertaining.
Grand larceny is not necessarily based on the resale value of the item. It can also be based on the original purchase price of the item. If I purchased a brand new $600 non-contract cellphone I'm still out $600. I'm not out the $300 that someone else was able to sell the phone for. If on the other hand someone stole a painting from my house that I paid $5 for a garage sale and I later discovered it was an original Monet then that too could be considered grand larceny because the known current value of the item is higher. A good attorney could argue it both ways quite effectively.

to rectify it. Just by realizing you are overly arrogant you have taken the first step towards rectifying it. Just keep in mind that in many subjects you will not be the most knowledgeable person. When you know you are correct about something be honest and forthcoming, and when you find out you're wrong on something admit it and accept the new knowledge. And, never ever hold something over other people. No one likes to be shut down in a conversation, it can be painful to deal with but you'll find that when you don't shut other people down you may actually learn from them too.
You made the point for me... I have a lot of engineers working from India and the quality of work and experience varies greatly. We get them early, break them in, and when they finally know a bit of what they are doing they leave for something else. Then we're back to the pool fresh from school. It's no different than the US market ten years ago when companies here actually hired people out of school and took the time to train them up. But, now every CIO seems to think they can just "buy" the labor they need when they need it figuring someone else will have trained up folks in the market.
