From just reading the summary, my first thought was DUH. It's the parents fault for allowing their kids to be manipulated but that is the whole point. It is the same thing as when Camel cigarettes was using the cartoon camel to advertise. The target demographic is painfully obvious. It is especially bad with McDonald's though because they use the rewards system in their advertisements and products. If you eat with us, you will get a "cool toy". We have a playground for you to have fun in. Kids are raised and learn what they learn from the rewards system. If I get good grades I get rewarded. If I do something bad I get punished. To top it off, they are advertising with cartoon characters. It is still the parents fault though. If I see a guy who is obviously a pedophile, i'm not going to allow my kids to go play with him or get near him. If I did, and something happened, would it be the pedophile's fault or my own? I think it would be my own.

I was going to dignify this with a response but its been eating at me all day. I can't stand Microsoft. When I was in the Army I tried to promote using Linux or BSD. Some systems we did use Linux on, particularly Red Hat but I can't really discuss what they are. I know there are easy work-a-rounds for what I've stated but that isn't the point. With Steam coming to Linux that could fix a lot of the problems I discusses but I see you didn't bother to respond to the other part of my original post. Hardware problems and the variety of ways of dealing with audio. If I was a proponent for Microsoft, I wouldn't even bother with this conversation because I want games on Linux. I would give my left leg for all the games I play to be available on Linux and run without issues. In order to fix the problem, we first have to pinpoint the problems. Then we can go about finding a way around them or fixing them. The point of my original post was to give some basic general ideas of what I thought were problems with Gaming on Linux and some possible solutions. Finally, I survived a really bad tour in Afghanistan. I'm not about to kill myself over some person on Slashdot who thinks i'm a Microsoft fan-boy ;-)

  8. The problem with Linux Gaming on Are Commercial Games Finally Going To Make It To Linux? · · Score: 1

There is a lot of issues with drivers and packaging with gaming on Linux. There are several major package managers. The top 2 are RPM and DEB. One easy thing with Windows is. You use one installer and it installs to Windows. You don't have to worry about which "distribution" of Windows to install too. That is unless you want to support legacy windows. Now before everyone gets into a uproar i'm sure it won't necessarily be a big deal to work with multiple packaging systems but it is a issue. Drivers are a problem right now, but, I think if game makers start making games for Linux then the hardware companies will follow with support for hardware for Linux. One big issue, though, that several people I know that develop games says with Linux is actually audio support. There is ALSA, OSS, Pulse, (does anyone use esound anymore?). Overall these are small problems but there is so much variety. That was a big selling point with Linux but for people who want a profit that is a lot of work and a lot of variables just to get one game working. I love Linux. I dual-boot but I hardly use Linux because I love PC Games. I would love for all my games to work on Linux so I wouldn't have to use Windows. I just don't see it happening until Linux can unify things. I think there should be One distro and one sound system. Let the game manufacturers code for them and then get the F/OSS people to work on compatibility patches for their favorite system. We could get more software/games into Linux and you can see have your "choice". If you want to choose which system you want to use then you need to make it work. That I think could work.

Depends on what you are talking about. You can hide the dock completely and use your own. I use Avant Window Manager and it provides a MacOS X style dock at the bottom of the screen. If you are talking about the HUD, then i'm not sure if you can change it but it never bothered me being in the upper left hand corner. You can change the Windows themselves. You can detach the menus from the top bar if you want. You can also change where you want the close, maximize and minimize buttons if you want as well.

  13. Re:Wishful thinking on Ubuntu Gnome Remix 12.10 Arrives For Testing · · Score: 1

I completely agree. The HUD is pretty awesome. The only thing I don't like really is the dock. However, you can just auto-hide the dock and use something like Avant or Cairo which is much better. Well I think the whole purple color scheme of Ubuntu sucks as well. You can change the purple color scheme but with LightDM even if you change the background and startup splash there is still a brief period of time when the screen is purple before the background loads. I think there is a patch for LightDM that fixes it if you want to recompile and install it but that is a lot of work just to change something that only lasts for a couple of seconds on boot.

A lot of Steam games are DRM-free. They can operate fully functionally outside of the Steam directory. You can even move the files to a completely diffrent directory once you've installed the game, though trying to play it through the Steam launher might not work hehe Anytime something positive happens someone has to look for the EXACT worst thing that could happen. Sometimes the stuff is not even plausible but nothing is impossible. They then dwell there like Gozer in my refrigerator. Lets all take one step at a time. Ok I originally was just going to say something goofy about this but this does have my concerned a little bit. I am a soldier in the US Army and PTSD is a really bad thing. It affects a lot more people than even the media is portraying. The thing is though, most people who get it easily "cope" with it by just talking about the event with people they feel understand it. From that point they use those hard emotions to do positive things. Atleast in the military, they usually become trainers for other people, or even invest that time in artistic ways. This all depends though on the severity of the event. The trend i'm beginning to notice though is that most of the more severe cases of PTSD i've ran across in the military are usually attached to something else though. I'm sure something like this could really benefit the more serious cases of PTSD. On the other hand, for the less serious cases people have acutally used those emotional memories to fuel positive change.
