"Last I checked, Quake3 didn't have a monthly fee. People don't want MMORPGs, people want MMOGs. There's a difference. Take a game like Subspace/Continuum [subspace.net]. It's MMO, but it's not a monthly fee (hell, it's free to boot!). "
Your example is a particularly bad one IMO because it was a commercial monthly fee game that died. You couldnt even run your own servers, you had to play on theirs. Once it died it became like you describe.
I recently hosted a lan party. On the first day someone went out and bought a new video card. Nothing else but that video card was installed into his system, and he had been gaming during the party before then just fine. As soon as the new video card went in, Windows demanded re-activation.
I'm told his wife is the entire reason there is a gates foundataion.
The point I want to make in replying to you is that a LOT of MS, Gates, and the foundations "donations of $$" have been in the form of MS stock. So if they gave out a billion in stock during the high point of the bubble, it's big news, but those orgs that didnt imediately turn it into cash now have considerably less.
Back in the day I thought that SPAM was sending the same or useless messages to the same newsgroup. Velveeta was the word I heard back then associated with the crossposting of spam to newsgroups.
While this is a decent mechanic, it does stifle roleplaying outside of CRPG.
What is the problem if a party of mostly good characters and a paladin takes on some rat bastard evil thief. The paladin isnt going to like him, or his ideas and they will come to a minimum of words, but it should add more character to the game IMO.
I find your misunderstanding of OpenGL disappointing.
OGL != DX OGL = D3D
Linux (and BSD for that matter) have nothing like DX as it stands now. They have things that are like some of the components of DX. This is where I agree with you that more work needs to be done to create what you describe.
Looking up, most of the people actually slamming the game are fellow christians. most of the people bashing christianity (no matter their faith) are not really talking about the game in question.
So Adobe is the Acclaim of the computer world.

How can you outsource critical stuff like that if government regulations like HIPAA are involved?
Us linux on alpha users have virtually no video driver support.

The Wizardry games had this back in the early 80's and kept it up through Wiz 8.
I think the fact that you would use WinME is telling, of what, we can all speculate.
Of all possible versions of windows (I regularly use 98SE, win2k pro, and NT4 Workstation) why subject yourself to that particular version?

Somehow I dont see Rowling having any claim on the concept of flying broomsticks or magic wands.
True, but I dont think he imagined all the slash fanfics that would be all over the internet.
