Blaming lack of employment on immigrants is just about the oldest and most pernicious trick in the book. What you're not mentioning is that someone willing to survive a tougher education system than the US's, learn a new language, and fly half way around the world to a land of people utterly hostile towards them--just to find work--is probably also going to be a more productive and better-motivated employee than someone who just breezes through the US education system and expects to be fellated by a harem of employers at the end. This is still a country where you can get a job based on merit, believe it or not, and to tell your kids or anyone else that it's the immigrants' fault is not doing them a service at all.
I actually find it hilarious that the three-letter agencies regard sending encrypted email as 'suspicious', and then wonder why how security breaches happen...
I know! Opening the passage means easier oil transportation, which means cheaper gas. Which means accelerated global warming, which implies faster melting of the ice cap, which implies the passage will open even more, which means even cheaper gas!
A completely out-of-focus picture actually contains nearly as much information as a sharp photo, it's just smeared with a reversible mathematical transform called a point spread function.
Either the transformation is reversible, and the two pictures contain the same information; or it is not, and they don't. If you don't believe me, I've posted a completely out-of-focus picture of a white object in the margin directly to the left of this post. I dare you to tell me what it is.
“For those of us lucky enough to get to work with Steve, it’s been an insanely great honor,” said Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder. “I will miss Steve immensely.”
Co0Ps, Jim here. Look, we've been on a hiring spree recently, and you know as well as I that unemployment rates have been at an all-time high for years. Therefore, I'm afraid we're going to have to let you go. I know, employing you probably resulted in some net good in some abstract sense, but the fact remains that employing you has basically had zero effect on unemployment overall. I men, it's not like you can just hire people and make unemployment magically disappear. I'm sure you'll therefore understand why this company just doesn't believe in employment anymore. Sorry!
I believe the correct comparison is to one of the old MIT leg lab's robots. 3D Biped wasn't restricted to a 1D track and could run and do somersaults--in 1992. And it didn't need no stinkin' knees either!
Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul recently caused an uproar when he claimed, among other things, that he could identify the gender of an author from their work:
In what must have been an attempt to be as offensive as possible, he continued, saying that men’s and women’s writing is “quite different I read a piece of writing and within a paragraph or two I know whether it is by a woman or not. I think [it is] unequal to me.”
I guess this means he was right? Although, for the record, he still seems like an arrogant, sexist SOB--just not for this particular reason.
And this terrible crime is truly worth having our clearanced military personelle deciding that its time to violate his oaths and divulge whatever information he saw fit-- even that which shows no "horrible crimes"-- to the entire world.
Remember the video of the death of the Reuters journalist, which the US repeatedly withheld against the wishes of said news agency? Care to guess how it eventually came to light?
Decibel figures are meaningless without knowing the distance of the observer to the bug's penis. For all we know, the scientist jammed the bug's willy into his/her ear, in which case the sound could obviously be perceived much louder than an orchestra from the front row!

Anyone owed a debt in the US (for instance), must accept US dollars as payment. That's what the notice "this note is legal tender for all debts, public and private" means on dollars. The same is not true for bitcoins--I can freely refuse payment in bitcoins, and the government can do nothing about it. That's a large component of the reason why people like dollars.
For those interested in an open-source alternative, there's MAGMA, which provides a bunch of linear algebra routines implemented in CUDA. I haven't tried it myself yet, but it looks promising.
Why would they want the infinite expense and risks involved with current nuclear?
If nuclear risks are infinite, then hydro risks are at least 50*infinity! 94% of deaths related to energy accidents were caused by hydro, thanks to many catastrophic dam bursts. To be "fair", most of those deaths were caused by the Shimantan dam burst in China, which killed 171,000 people... but you never hear about that one, do you?
Though it's worth noting that magnitude scales really are orders of magnitude, it's also worth noting that even a "weak" earthquake can cause catastrophic damage. The Haiti earthquake was "only" a 7.0, but it killed approximately 300,000 people, which is about 10 times any estimate I've heard of the death toll in Japan. The difference is that the Haiti earthquake hit a stone's throw away from a major population center. In earthquakes, much as in real estate, location is everything.
H1Bs are a waste of time. I have three of them here in my department and none of them can think their way out of a wet paper sack with neon signs written in their own language pointing to the exit.
Then. Why. Did. You. Hire. Them?
Seriously, what's the point of blaming the feds or H1Bs for your own incompetent hiring practices? Hire the best people for the jobs, H1B or not, and stop worrying about how many brown people the US is allowing into our fair land.
Penny wise, pound foolish! The difference between FLAC and lossy compression at a reasonable bit rate is negligible to most people. What we should really get behind is an end to the loudness war, which is a far more pernicious form of compression that's applied before the music even hits the CD. Unless it stops, FLAC or no FLAC, your music will continue to sound crappier and crappier over time.
I see nothing in the article to support the claim that this app has been sanctioned by the Catholic Church, besides the fact the author seems to be a priest, and seems to like it. This is an app developed by a private company with no official connection to the Church (and a horribly broken website, to boot).

This statement makes no sense:
A completely out-of-focus picture actually contains nearly as much information as a sharp photo, it's just smeared with a reversible mathematical transform called a point spread function.

From the NYTimes article:
Copying S. J. to the bitter end... how appropriate.
Share your gift with the world by taking a photograph with an ultraviolet-sensitive camera of whatever looks cool to you.

No stock-selloff. Less important than Steve Jobs's resignation. Lame.

The real question is, does he gave the guts to do it in person, or does he in fact use an autoknife?
I believe this is the bill, intuitively titled Small Business Additional Temporary Extension Act of 2011. Apparently, this bill was "amended" by removing and replacing the entire text with the PATRIOT ACT renewal!

In downtown Austin, Texas, in the time since the story broke I've heard what sound like numerous celebratory gunshots.
What better way to celebrate the death of a terrorist, than with a potentially deadly act of random violence!
Actually, if you've ever wondered why rulers don't have millimeters markings on them, this is why--they can't be seen by the unaided eye!

There is no emoticon to express my outrage at this story!
