And, in both directions, it's a good argument.

This type of conversion is expensive. I have 2 applications right now which would run perfectly fine on Linux or BSD, but they're hosted on Windows 2003 right now. Why? Because that's what our sysadmins know best. The app runs fine on Windows, and the rest of our systems and tools are MS-centric. There isn't a compelling business reason to have these 2 systems breaking that, and plenty of good arguments against it.

Family Guy and Drive didn't get the crappiest timeslot known to man (Sunday 7 PM in the fall on an NFL network). Pretty sure Firefly didn't either.

All their schedules got shuffled around, which is the kiss of death for any show on any network. Fox even did it to the show that originally got the network noticed - Married w/ Children - once they started moving it all over the calendar, the ratings plummeted because no one knew when to tune in.

  5. Re:Networks on Futurama Movie Set For November 27 · · Score: 1

It wasn't just about marketing, Fox never gave the show a chance on the schedule. They put it on at 7 PM on Sundays, right where it would get preempted by NFL games November & December (Fox starts their seasons in November for a number of shows). If a game ran more than 5 minutes past 7, they'd stick with post-game coverage till 7:30, then go to King of the Hill.

A show can't build a fanbase, can't get ratings, can't sell ads, if it's not even on when it's scheduled to be.

I don't think Fox wanted it to survive in the first place. I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did on that network.

Airlines have been doing this for years. And hotels, and other industries. Apartment complex management is getting into the game as well.

I have a friend who works for a rental car company, he does this sort of thing in his head at least a dozen times a day - get the customer into a car at the greatest financial benefit to the agency. You may think that you're getting a great deal when he bumps you from a mid-size to a full-size car for only $6/day more, but he comes out the winner, because he'll turn around and rent that mid-size to someone else for $2/day more than you were going to be paying.
