Yeah but Internet radio (as in independently owned) may be going away too. See the other article on arstechnica about it. It could turn into a subscription based service to recoup for the increase. I believe it applies to stations that only broadcast indie (unsigned stuff). Let's hope not.
Well I am not defending the position but I believe that's the source the GP post is referring to. I honestly don't believe the industry would disclose the motivation for their DRM to be control and not piracy as it is bad for business. I admit I looked at the article to see if there was any flat out evidence of one executive saying this but i couldn't find any but I unless the original poster has a link I don't know about. I assume he means this article.
But c'mon, I mean I can see what you're saying about getting a Linux tech but the rest of the argument doesn't really hold that much water. Most sane companies shouldn't all be using different types of PCs, in which you buy a random new one and aren't sure it will work. It can also depend on what you're using the computer's for. If it is some sort of obscure hardware interfacing that maybe windows only has a driver for then sure. However, office work and the like should really feel transparent. Throw some desktop icons on there of your office suite of choice and all the basic necessary tools (they exist) and you are good. Now if you're a MS Office poweruser that may be another problem since OpenOffice really isn't ready to replace MS Word in that respect and anyone who says otherwise hasn't really used Office beyond the basics.
I'm with you on that and it isn't even the Rural areas. I am in New York City and there are dead spots (The land time forgot) that just drops calls and knocks me down to one or two bars. It isn't even the phone because I have used several as much as I'd like to blame my Sony Ericsson for mediocrity. I keep it because they have a pretty good plan and my contract isn't up until July.
I believe you are talking about Quantum Physics but the problem with that would be that you couldn't really send coherent information out. You have 2 particles and once you "know" the spin of one particle you "know" the spin of the other. To alter the spin of a particle would contaminate it, because you would have known what the spin was to reverse it. I could be wrong, and I think actually there is some method using 2 pairs of particles to transmit information but I'd have to look it up it was all theory in Brian Greene's "Fabric of the Cosmos" (Good Read) but using the method you describe there is no way to send a message.
No, lack of drivers is a product of Microsoft's dominance. Vendors didn't inherently go with Microsoft because they were Microsoft (Before they started being used on every desktop). Microsoft is now the dominant OS therefore vendors will release drivers especially for windows. Ever look at an AMD chip in the plastic? It says Designed for XP, same for 90% of the graphics cards made for PCs today. I think that the only way to have a level playing field with the drivers are for the vendors to open the code of the driver (NOT the firmware as some douchebags will want you to think) and/or give out some clear or semi-clear documentation on how the computer should interact with the device. OpenBSD has made leaps and bounds on doing this and stay committed. In fact they have excellent wireless support, especially since they love to be technically correct with code/security etc. Open source operating systems lack the back door business deals that make this easier to accomplish but it is a hell of a lot better than it was back in 1999. Win-modems anyone?
He is running a legitimate business. What does your point have to do with domain squatters or people purchasing the wrong domain class? The way domain companies sell names indifferently has no bearing on this. Are you saying that this guy shouldn't have gotten WarGames because there was a commercial entity with a movie from 1983. Whether or not the term is very widely used beyond the movie.
3. Antivirus
Vista does not bundle an antivirus application, and most third party antivirus applications are not yet compatible with Vista. Ok, look, I am all for Open Source. I have an open source program I currently manage myself and I am a big fan of Linux, and the *BSDs but this is ridiculously unfair precisely for the reason of whether they bundle an antivirus or not, Microsoft will be crucified. If Microsoft were to bundle it's own Antivirus, AV vendors (whom are already bitching) will complain that Microsoft is engaging in unfair business practices and shutting them out of a multi billion dollar industry. If Microsoft picks a vendor and bundles that, you will get the same reaction sans the chosen vendor. The free software advocates should see that it is either one or the other and yeah I am sure they could throw a bunch of free alternatives (AVG, ClamWin) if they wanted to but you know they won't. As for antivirus applications not yet being compatible, isn't it also on Symantec to make sure their THIRD PARTY software is on par with the latest and greatest from Microsoft?
On that note I will probably not be upgrading to Vista personally based on all the bullshit and hassle and I will probably have to figure out which path to take in the mean time but my main point is. This complaint is just unfair.
Exactly. This is just flamebait to just post this. While what he said in response is a stupid "fix" he isn't saying everyone stop using Opera. He is saying that is that ONE guy isn't getting the page loaded up correctly (Notice he said other people using opera had no problems.) Upgrade or use another browser. It would be nice if people would stop posting up summaries that give quotes out of context...
Yeah, I kind of wondered how it was done. I mean i am not expert on TCP/IP in the least and my open source project depends on peer to peer proxy of certain game traffic. Maybe I can implement this method and keep the host from having to open their port.
Its like fulfilling the prophesy of Nostradamus or something. Just wait it out and if something hasn't happened yet wait some more. Use anomalies to prove things without any correlating evidence. Right now it's a warm November day here in New York City. I guess I'll invoke Godwin's Law 2.0 and blame Bush.
Yeah, well in the states where that is considered OKAY. I find it the hardest to explain why DVDs cannot be played right off the bat. Most people aren't aware of the content protection or the artificial (patents but isn't DeCSS too?) in many of the formats they use and believe the system is broken or still in 1993.
Why were the mp3s not working? No sound or some cryptic problem? I can understand DVDs with no "authorized" Linux software player thats legal (at least in the US).
Yeah I missed that and focused on the credits squashing part (tired:-\) of your post but I do know what you mean. It gets annoying but I try to avoid Sci Fi (Except for Battlestar) like the plague because it has turned into a bigger joke of its former self than I would have given them credit to do. It should be renamed the "B-movie rip offs to give Casper Van Dien and Sean Patrick Flanery a paycheck" channel but that would be kind of long.
Well how about when you are watching a show or movie on TNT and they show an ad for another show that takes up 25% of the damn screen. It often hurts if a movie may have subtitles (some characters speaking foreign not necessarily a foreign movie) and you can't see it because they want to tell you that LAW AND ORDER is coming on. Some stations are getting ridiculous.
Exactly, it's no different from any of the other addictions people get in life. Its not the substance that is so relevant so much as the person's addictive personality. I believe if it wasn't WoW it would have been something else. I've known many people back when EverCrack was popular who disappeared off the face of the planet.
Text based ads that I don't think are very intrusive. (Subjective view of course)
Furthermore don't you feel creepy when you realize its been reading your mail to determine what to display?
Reading the context of my email? Not a big concern. How do you know yahoo doesn't read your email for "marketing" purposes. Not singling out Yahoo, the same can be applied to AOL, or even back to google, not a troll comparison.
Yeah, you probably mean SanDisk. Rockbox is just the open source firmware/software that can be installed on a variety of mp3 players. Sending them that email will probably result in absolutely nothing. Try an online petition against rockbox for doing something they have entirely nothing to do with.
In Quantum Cryptography, traditional man-in-the-middle attacks are impossible due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. If Mallory attempts to intercept the stream of photons, he will inevitably alter them if he uses an incorrect detector. He cannot re-emit the photons to Bob correctly, which will introduce unacceptable levels of error into the communication.
If Alice and Bob are using an entangled photon system, then it is virtually impossible to hijack these, because creating three entangled photons would decrease the strength of each photon to such a degree that it would be easily detected. Mallory cannot use a man-in-the-middle attack, since he would have to measure an entangled photon and disrupt the other photon, then he would have to re-emit both photons. This is impossible to do, by the laws of quantum physics.
Unless the law of quantum physics is wrong and the whole system breaks down eitherway.

nah thats the Doom 3D effect, its just a bitmap staring at you from all directions. Does the "HP" use 10-15 pixels to display?
