I've always been wondering this, and Slashdot is pretty smart, so I guess I'll ask him (Her?). What is the deal with the inside of books, where they say:
"If you purchased this book without a cover you should be aware that this book is stolen property."
It goes on; pick up any paperback nearby for the rest.
Are book thieves somehow required to tear the cover off of all the books when they rob Borders?
What do they do with the covers? Is the cover my license? (Hopefully that makes it an iota closer to ontopic)
Why is it that all accusations towards Bin Laden are (fairly) disputed by many, yet there are eqaully many undisputed posts that essentially "claim responsibilty" by defending the arab states and our treatment of that area etc. etc.?
Agreed. This was slashdot's finest hour. A little slow, but on a 5000 comment day, that's acceptable. And there were a LOT of good comments, especially in the morning. News links after news links....which were, of course, modded up so I would see them. Good work yesterday and before that to create this place.
Well if we know these people may be associated with Bin Ladin's organization, and they used their real names to get the tickets, shouldn't that have rasied an eyebrow somewhere?
Well all of you who remember playing Oregon Trail seem to not remember that the whole point of the game was to go hunting as much as possible. The ground was littered with squirrels and rabbits before I would return to the wagon and move but one game tick so it would let me hunt again.
Oregon Trail: "You have killed 5400 pounds of meat, but can only carry 200 back."
The idea of using spent Space Shuttle fuel tanks is not new. It was once considered by Nasa as the basis for its own space station. However it was discarded as being too simple.
Now that's an engineering point of view if I've ever seen one.
"Ideas anyone?"
"Hmm we could just use the spent fuel tanks from the Shuttle."
"Yeah that would be great, and really easy!"
"I don't know, it's pretty simple."
"Yeah I agree. Any other, more complicated, ideas?"
Better is a tough word, but I would say that LOTR is better because of the things you listed (epic scope, attention to detail) And Tolkien did somewhat develop the Gollum character, although none of the others really. That's a valid point, but we're talking about a sci-fi award here, where epic scope and attention to detail should carry more weight than intercharacter relationships (not a lot, but a little)
I'm just agreeing with whoever has posted saying it seems like Hugo has tried to latch onto the Harry Potter popularity.......rather than give the Hugo to LOTR in 1954, they didn't give out an award at all, unless I'm reading that list incorrectly, in which case it was given to "They'd Rather be Right" by Mark Clifton. I'm sure that it's not a bad story (I can't claim to have read it), but I'm sure it's no LOTR.
By the way I am male and like LOTR better. Maybe a slashdot poll? The girls would pick CowboyNeal though.
Well this is all well and good I suppose, but if this can win, LOTR should have also. That has about as much sci-fi in it, and will always be better than Harry Potter.
I hate this kind of stuff....not only is it stupid and a violation of rights and blah blah blah but WE'RE paying for it! I can think of many better things to do with all the money these people are being paid to change this back and forth......for example, my monitor is less than flat...
Well those articles were swell and all, but I don 't think they'd even make it past a lameness filter here because of their shortness. Does anybody know where we can find what Mr. Hawking actually said^H^H^H^Htyped and had syntesized?
Slashdotting is not the verb there, the verb is "to be" contracted with "everyone"
"Slashdotting" is a participle or gerund or something.
I am so smart.
It takes you an hour to "harden"? That must be boring for your wofe/girlfriend.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
Hey I need some points: let me mention that the Hindenburg explosion was caused by the paint on the skin of the blimp, NOT the hydrogen.
Now mod me up, like the 50 other people who mentioned this and made it to +3, Insightful.
guh.
They have done some very good work this week. If you need to laugh a bit, visit them. Unless you are my mom or something, you will not be offended.

I know of one...........the Supreme Court.

Some quick button pushing reveals that 9100 comments have ben posted in the last day.

No more camera ads for today, if no one else has gotten that yet.

First of all WAY TO GO /.
Best source of news for me all day...had to sort the wheat from the chaff, but the comments were moderated even today.
What is going on with the int'l flights still up there...especially the ones that cannot be contacted?

Not a good one for these kids.
Way to link, no link!
What does 71 mph mean? How about RPMs?
