You don't have to replant trees. Many simply keep growing when you cut them down, and in fact they grow faster because the root system is already in place.
Combined with pyrolysis/charcoal making => agri/biochar for farming gives you an energy positive, economically positive mechanism for sequestering vast amounts of carbon.
And like sibling jojoba points out- p2p DNS would be HORRIBLE from a trust perspective.
Actually, what it means, is that we would have to actually fix once and for all, the identity/trust/reputation problem that the Internet already engenders. Unless you use https for everything, signed emails etc you are already trusting people all over the place.
The rule of thumb I have seen is that over half of produced energy is wasted in this way.
Most of the loss is within the power station. Where the heat energy is converted to electricity. Only 35-60% of the energy produced is converted to electricity int the first place (depending on generation system).
Transmission is relatively efficient in comparison.
Course in some countries (like Finland or Denmark), they distribute the "waste" heat produced by power plants and people use that in industrial processes, space heating, hot water production etc. So they have (relatively) close to 100% efficiency.
C'mon, this thing cost 30k+ and it's going to spend 95% of it's time idle? It can drive autonomously. Lease it to a taxi firm, make it earn that 30k back while you are not using it.
And that is the problem with autonomous cars. Economically, they'll become taxis. Any car company which successfully produces an autonomous car, will destroy their own market.
i.e. there will never be a mass market car which can drive autonomously.
I mean. You think they'd go ahead and install this kind of stuff for free? No, someone in the council came to them with big budget and said we want to do "this".
If said council came to you with tens of millions and said, we want to do "this". Wouldn't you take the money?
Android has something like a 1300% growth rate. If we extrapolate that forever, we can see that Android is going to take over the entire universe in approximately 15 years.
You are partially right. However, oil is cheap because it's easy. You drill a hole in the ground and suck it out. You don't have to put much effort into it.
i.e. You get a lot of energy out for very little energy in.
The alternatives are not like that. You have to put a lot of energy in to get some more back out. For oil, you used to get 100+:1, now I believe it's down around 20:1 and falling as it gets harder to find. GoM disaster as an example.
Shale oil for example is down to low single digits, 3:1, 5:1. Ethanol is probably negative or barely positive.
What this means is that a much larger percentage of our budgets, economy and civilisation are simply going to be concerned with producing energy. 20% - 30% of everything everyone does will be energy production related.
except for the usa . Their only real competition are apple and google... From the usa... They have been making smartphones for a decade and are looking to get into the usa market with stuff like the n900 and n8. They haven't been able to break the us market so far and i'll bet this is elop's first task .
I think it's a perfectly valid point of view to believe a government should protect an environment where it's most productive members are enabled to enrich themselves
I can't work out whether you are a confused socialist or a confused conservative.
Nerds are supposed to be smart.
No, nerds are supposed to be borderline autistic.

As if that really was the problem.

the data protection act requires you to take reasonable steps to protect information . Putting it on a web site does not seem reasonable .

haven't you heard of latency ? It is what makes things real slow .
Stick it in a garage?

Where the usefulness of a service increases with the number of people using it.

i.e. everyone but Facebook, are money down the drain. They would have to fuck up monumentally to break the effect.
Cos they are working for the companies. Not for you. Think directorship, member of the board. that kind of thing.

Who knew...
I bet the trains run on time though.
for being the first to point out that thousands miles of network are not the same as a digital camera .

Yeahbut. Aren't the global market and the US market just the same thing?
Oh wait. No.
unspecific whining is not information.
hth.
Every single feature disappoints in some way, down to the calendar and the timer
And yet, no specifics. Y'know I'm disappointed there isn't a Santa Claus handing out presents in the office here, but y'know, reality sucks sometimes.
If Nokia really wants to be a big player in the smartphone market they will have to continue with MeeGo.
WTF? Please define "smartphone".
which they clearly have in spades . they need to go back to school .
the iphone is powerless not powerful .
the real narcisists have their own vanity domains.
or japanese or swedish or swiss or something like that . Apple is american .
