Yes, because memory prices didn't drop at all until 2001, right? I can certainly remember paying a dollar per byte when I bought my first 128 MB RAM stick back in 1995...
You should recheck your math. I seriously doubt you spent $134,217,728 for 1 stick of 128 MB RAM in 1995. Dollars per MB, sure. I remember 32 MB sticks being almost $200 around that time.
If most Americans income has stayed the same over the last few years, while inflation causes everything to cost more now then it did then, it means most people have less residual income to spend on CDs and other items deemed unnecessary.
Folding@Home say that the data will be released to the public. That's a start, but before I spend my CPU time on any kind of biotech project, I want a guarantee that the research won't be patented and kept from humanity the way HIV medication has been kept from people in Africa.
I was gonna post a similar comment. I would mod you up if I could.
Wow, I can't believe people are so selfish that they'd risk the U.S.'s relations with another country just so they, and _possibly_ others, can see what happened. If the FBI wants documents classified, the FBI has a good reason. I don't want another 9/11 in the U.S. or a foreign country just because people want to see some documents.
If they had just released the information, a vast majority people would probably never have paid it any attention at all. Now by saying no, they have piqued the interest of many people that want to know what the information is, on a guy that has been dead for almost 25 years, that needs to be held back as to risk foreign relations.
Its probably something silly like some foreign leader gets violently ill at hearing 'Instant Karma'.
Hmm, but aren't the broadcasters and FCC etc. about to make it impossible to make your own copy of the event with the new broadcast flag, drm etc.
I wonder how it will work to get a copy of the material to inspect. What would be interesting would be to use this as a means to get a copy of the show. Will one just be able to call up the station and say "I am offended by last night's showing of the Simpson's, I want a copy to verify it." Granted, the station would probably catch on after while. Maybe they could limit you to a specific time span or force you to subpoena the material in question.
Hello, this is Homer Simpson, a.k.a. Happy Dude. The court has ordered me to call every person in town to apologize for my telemarketing scam. I'm sorry. If you can find it in your heart to forgive me, send one dollar to Sorry Dude, 742 Evergreen Terrace, Springfield. You have the power.
I understand the points in the article about why the FCC should be abolished and I disagree with the FCC's regulations about content on public broadcasting channels and the like, but who will be there to stop me from playing Eminem on the frequency of the local police department that I love so much? Who will people complain to when their eleven o'clock news is intermittently interrupted by images of the Goatse man ready to go, because I'm driving through suburban neighborhoods with a transmitter in my car? And thats without even bringing the market into consideration... I think the FCC has an important role in the stability of our telecommunications that couldn't be taken up by the market itself simply due to the nature of business.
There is nothing stopping anyone from doing those things now, except for breaking FCC regulations. The point the article was trying to make is that the slices of spectum would be treated just real estate is now, some areas are public ( roads, parks, etc) and others private. If you are illegally broadcasting in a particular spectum then you are trepassing just like if you jumped over a fence into someone's land. These 'titles' for area of the spectum could be bought and sold just like real estate is now.
is the parent company that owns Southwestern Bell (the actual phone service provider), Cingular, DirecTV, SBC Internet (SBC Yahoo! DSL), and probably others.
SBC is currently in
partnership with DISH Network. BTW, DirectTV was bought by News Corp (Fox).
The only thing that has prevented me from buying an iBook or PowerBook is the low resolution LCD screens Apple uses in their products. Having a high resolution screen is one of the main features I look for when I purchased my laptop. On Apple's 15" PowerBook, the only resolution is 1280 x 854. A Dell I8600 has an option to get a 15" Wide screen UXGA which has a resolution of 1680 x 1050 the same resolution of Apple's 20" iMac.
The compact disc was developed in 1980 by Sony and Philips. 1982 saw its mass production in Langenhagen near Hanover, Germany. Microsoft and Apple Computer were early enthusiasts and promoters of CD-ROMs.
There's three kinds of people in the world. Cops, perps, and perps who haven't been caught. Power corrupts, but power without accountability is an awful lot of fun.
If you're in college, consider majoring in Criminal Justice and joining the winning side. You can be under the gun, or you can hold the gun. Better to be a killer than a victim.
Then there is only 2 types of people: perps, and perps who haven't been caught. Cops being the latter.
Except as mentioned in numerous posts the clerks do not check ID over voters coming in to vote. Say I had a list of registered voters that I knew would not be voting in a certain city. I could visit different places and vote multiple times, and as long as I gave a valid names and address the clerks would mark the given name and give me a ballot. So in the end, how is this form of fraud different than changing the ballot after it is entered.

I totally agree with you. I seriously think the WoT series could use a "phantom edit" to bring the series to about 6 books, just by cutting out all the parts where he constantly rehashes the story over and over again, and cut out the many irrelvant scenes.
No I understand they changed their mind, and I applaud them, but why not go the last step and use another, more obscure name if it's just a codename? Hell, look at the codenames Intel and MS choose.
Yeah, Chicago, Cairo, and Longhorn are SO obscure!! The city of Chicago should have sued M$ for associating their name with Windows.
But the US is worse, they normally ignore the UN so badly that they should be clear and just step out of the UN. That would make its position clear to the rest of the world.
It's rather difficult to follow the decisions of an organization that would put Libya in charge of the Human Rights Council. After the war is over the UN will probably want Saddam for Secretary-General.
...but if MS was running a search engine, they can afford to have no paid links, and no annoying ads.
You're right, they "could" afford not to have paid links or ads, but this is MS, they're not gonna leave it ad-free. This is like saying MSN.com would be ad-free because AOL and Yahoo have paid links and ads.
I think in Bush's mind this war will give him more popularity and keep him in Office for another term (Presidents are always re-elected during war time).
Yeah, his father demonstrated this so well. Senior went from having the highest approval rating ever to out of a job in under 2 yrs. I think the same will happen to Junior, if he keeps delaying.
But the calbe modem doesn't use linux, and most likely, your call center will not support people who would call in wanting help getting it to work w/ linux

The only reason the Bill of Rights exist today is because the population agrees to adhere to it. Once they don't agree to it anymore, they have a right to change or amend to it.
IIRC, the major reason for the American Civil War was that the Southern States no longer agreed with the Federal government and wanted to form their own government, which the Union objected. Therefore the people do not have the right to change it. Only the Federal government does.

Does not mean that they should not be. Cocaine and opium derivatives used to be sold by similar companies (e.g. Coca-cola)
Spyware/Adware is legal because the user agrees, albeit often without knowing it, to install it on their computer. You cna do this.
Just because a vague Active X control window pops up asking to install a particular program, does not make it "legitimate" and safe.
