NO matter what MS says, no matter how hard they yell or lie or cheat or steal, as long as LINUX is useful and continues to improve people will use it. MS still does not understand that Windows biggest enemy is itself and not LINUX. LINUX is'nt designed to "beat" windows. It's designed according to the needs of it's users. The only reason we are seeing it improve in the desktop arena is because the userbase is changing, becomming more mainstream. So don't worry! Use LINUX (or BSD if that's your fancy) and ignore the "other camp". As long as everybody likes using it it will not die.
I'm curious as to how the GPL could help with the problem of software patents. Does anybody have information on what might go into the license that will address this problem? And how it will work?
Somebody post the freakin article so I can comment

Re-Imagining Apple

· Score: 1
Apple could send somebody to "encourage" him...or maybe cause an accident. I have a BIG tin hat! Remember...those who beat their swords into plowshares will plow for those who don't
I just emailed my buddy back at Dreamworks (identity protected!) and here is what he said about what it's like at Dreamworks...

The pixar tour site is slashdotted, so I don't know what they have.
We have:
large offices, with doors, with one or two people per office
fountains, park-like areas, waterfalls, lagoon area, courtyards, etc.
Southern California weather
free breakfast
free lunch (relatively gormet, with usually two or three entree options)
free well-stocked snacks (fruit, chips, candy, ice cream, etc)
free tea, coffee, soda, juice, etc.
$20/month health insurance for my whole family
free movies, about 2-6 per month, often well before public release
lots of gaming options around campus (pool, ping pong, darts, foosball,
shuffleboard (table version), street hockey, etc.
free gifts from time to time (ranging from shirts and DVDs to digital cameras and stock)
After a windows box has been "owned" by some d00d the OS is not going to be in a condition where after you restore everything via user prefs that everything will probably work. You can't be sure the hacker has not completly stuffed back doors in your system files.
In UNIX. If a hacker kills your home space and you delete it and restore it You can be confident that the rest of the OS will work fine. And that means you will not have to re-install apps all over again (assuming you installed them using higher privs than user and they were installed in shared filesystem space like/usr)
Reasonable? Well...it depends on the group. You could also make the claim that less attacks would be on OS X because of it being easier to crack windows boxes and use them as zombies.
" The lesser amount of pure research, plus the lesser amount of wild exposure, mean that there will be plenty security-wise in OS X that's missed"
THAT is a purely speculative. "Plenty" depends on your perspective. Don't forget that MUCH of OS X that is not apple produced is open source that has already had it's source code combed over.
Have you ever tried just recovering a user environment after windows is compromised? Settings are strewn throughout the registry and filesystems (along with installed apps). If you re-install windows and THEN recover your user profile you'll be VERY lucky if anything works at all.
With OS X (just as in UNIX). If you back up your user space and it gets trashed. It's as easy as restoring a single home directory onto the filesystem and you are back in buisness.
Whenever anybody talks about OS X vulnerabilities its always "If OS X gains market share" or "viruses on OS X are likely.."
I can accept the THEORY that OS X will become a target as more people use it. BUT let's look at REAL numbers. I know of NO major (or even minor) outbreak of a virus or malware on OS X. Might..could...likeley....well there HAS NOT BEEN ONE.
Also. There will be more than one post that talkes about the fact that OS X users do not run the as the equivelant of a user with administrator roots on windows (which 90+ % of all windows users are guilty of).
The WORST you could do is trash your user environment. NOT the OS.
Ipod sells because its COOL (and a little due to apple well designing it's software)...it's got NOTHING to do with IPOD vs napster on price. There is a "herd" mentality when a consumer device becomes the "hip" thing to have. And right now, IPOD and IPOD mini and IPOD shuffle is the "hip" thing to have.
My mother wants an IPOD because she likes the way the case looks.
Can you believe the slashdot overloards rejected this as a story! http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-lohsen-i p-burrito-00.txt
I have two inputs...both coax lines from each tuner on the dish.
Myth does not work with my DirecTV unit.....so TIVO it is until they do

I would watch out if I were him. Don't think it's beneath corporations to "erase" problems.
Yea..yea Maybe I'm paranoid. But paranoia keeps you alive!

I don't know about you...but I don't want somebody who is "Touching cotton" to be passing (Hey! It's a pun!) by my cube.....

After 3 tries on an ATM the card is locked out
I've changed since last week. Now I have an ATM card only (no debit). Without the Pin it's useless.
I use a regular credit card and get airline miles. Just pay it off at the end of the month.
Learned my lesson
The dude ended up spending $700 bucks of my money! Thankfully the bank got all my money back (that night).
Why oh Why do banks not require pin numbers for charge cards! Signatures are SO bad they're allmost useless!
why share the cake when you can have it all for yourself

Think about it...
Fire....pressurized cabin....no place to run (20,000 feet up).
Do you need a smoke THAT bad
Firefox already does this. It's called XUL.
The amazon browser is a good example. Too bad there arent very many other examples out there...

I bet the spooks over at homeland security are looking at this as a way to tell when somebody is lying (reliably).
