Studies have shown that when you FORCE joe user to use a random alpha numeric with special charachters password and in some places change it every 90 days requiring that it be different by 3 charachters you get the following.
1. Stickies with passwords attached to monitors, underneath keyboards ect...
2. The SAME password used everywhere (web, work..ect..).
Passwords have finally reached the end of their life. Smart Cards, SecurID's....biometric are a MUCH better choice.
Well...this will probabaly make more people paranoid about the police comming and confiscating their systems for evidence. I don't share files over the net, but if I did I'd probably use a Mac enable Filevault. It's not perfect, but probably would keep them from using stuff in my home directory against me.
Well...there it is. Time to Cash in that 401K. Ya can't take $$$ with ya, so you might as well try to run up some debt. The person with the most debt at death wins!
If you have 6 MB/s 768 Kb/s upstream like some cable providers are lettting people buy (It's what I have) then 300KB/s is not unusual. 500Kb/s is a bit much, you'd need more upstream bandwidth.
Plus....T1 = 1.54 Mb/s or approximately 160KB/s
The other factor with bittorrent is WHEN you join the torrent and how much upstream bandwidth the seeders have. If you join in the beginning when the torrent is small then things will go slow. All it takes is for one seeder to join with a big connection to get things going.
The reason why the whole Star Trek universe (besides Enterprise) was fairly successfull was due to the fact that the Star Trek Universe was re-imagined 75 years into the future. The difference was fresh and COMPLETELY different from the old series.
I think they should do it again...jump into the future...but this time, don't jump 75 years...jump 750 years! or maybe even a couple thousand years!
It would give the writers the latitude to imagine how the federation (and the Star Trek Universe) would evolve far into the future and create some REALLY interesting storylines.
Signing up for.mac requires you to put in a credit card...and doing ichat via Rendevous does not work for me because there are no users on my network. Does using AOL require the conference to pass through some server somewhere...causing low performance? Or does it just authenticate and then do a point to point?
The WORLD uses H.323 (polycom...picturetel...netmeeting)
Why? Because it keeps you employed. Crashes occur and because expectations are LOW to begin with using MS software there is almost NO risk. The more problems occur the more work you have and work is a GOOD thing.
In my company ALL corporate IT software is Microsoft (even though the account I'm on is supporting UNIX/LINUX thank GOD!). The fact of the matter is, a major reason why people choose MS is the same reason people choose CISCO. Even if there is a catastrophic failure....viruses blast all the PC's, constant crashes. People DONT get fired because they chose Microsoft. They can pan the excuse..."Well...it's windows what do you expect?". Management shrugs it off because to admit that they made an error choosing ONE vendor for their entire IT infrastructure makes them look bad. Choosing LINUX means that if it were to fail they would get panned for taking risk. From an individual manager's perspective there IS no personal career risk from choosing Microsoft. If it breaks...well everybody uses microsoft so it's not his fault (mentality)
Unknown to many, If you are an internet2 (most universities) connected college or university then you probabaly have access to the multicast feed of NASA TV being broadcast by the University of Oregon. WHY NASA does not provide this themselves since NASA is connected to Internet2 is beyond me. (I even wrote to the web site asking about it...nobody responded).
They could save a TON of bandwidth from multicast enabled users clicking on unicast streaming servers...if only they would POST that it's available!
Somebody should ask paul Allen if he would be willing to bankroll it. He's been interested in space projects before. I doubt if the accountant looking at his balance sheet would even notice it (well...the accountant would..but you get the picture)
Ewww....Detroit is like a bombed out Mad Max style City. Think Robocop and that is EXACTLY what it's like. The roads suck, and it's COLD in the winter.
About the only good thing Detroit has for it is decent radio.
I used to be open minded and shifting in ideas. Now I'm dogmatic. Never let anybody elses facts get in the way of your beliefs. Don't be bringing your square peg to my round hole.
Since starting work at NSF supporting the CISE (Computer and Information Science and Engineering) Directorate almost 4 years ago I can tell you from first hand experience that their workload has exploded. Make no mistake, the amount of money CISE has gotten has significantly increased (though probably not to the extent that other agencies have cut basic research). The scientists and staff there are working their butts off to review and fund grants. I've sat in on meetings listening to VERY smart people who are "plugged" in to what is going on.
There are some things Scientists/researchers can do to help things along (not money related).
1. Learn how to write a grant! (Use proper English, be clear about what you are trying to accomplish).
2. When given the opportunity, accept a request to become a grant reviewer (called "panelist" in NSF speak)
3. Don't get all bent out of shape when your grant gets turned down! Like submitting short stories to magazines for publication the majority don't make it. Go back to the drawing board, check your EGO! Listen to people who don't like your idea and see what can be done.
4. Write your congressman (duh...everybody should do that!) and support more money for NSF! (Well...that's money related but you get the point)

Useless to those with no upload bandwidth to give....probably like yourself

There was no mention of H.323 capabilities in ichat which is a shame. I know...ophoneX works with the firewire camera but it's flaky and slow.
.Mac account just to do videoconferencing.
Apple should understand that not everybody WANTS an AOL or
NASA stands for "National Air and Space Administration". Nowhere do I see "sea" or "water". Give mony to NOAA for that.

did'nt know one existed. I accessed it via SAP announcement through the videolan interface.

You could write a virus that has your music in the payload...think of the exposier!
NSF has a whole division for that...it's called the Division of Shared Cyberinfrastructure.
