    Microsoft Research went on an incredible hiring spree in the mid 90s, Picking up a majority of the top researchers in some fields. I'm surprised more killer products haven't come out of there since, apart from the difficulty of bringing products from reasearch to production I always observered at Bell Labs.

    The basic reason was to control release dates, and
    to mollify countries like China who would like to
    prevent people from seeing a lot of films. Censorship.
    I'm not sure its an idea that was destined to fail,
    but I'd sure be glad if it did.

    As it is, this whole situation with Catholic
    priests is a perfect demonstration of the
    situation. Here is a bunch of gay guys that said
    "being gay is a choice, I don't have to be gay.
    I can be celebate." Great outcome, huh?

    I'll think twice before checking out another shuttle mini system. The SV24 looked good on paper, but the company failed to release decent software support for the video or the audio. Sure, they had some creaky binary only drivers, but if you are trying to develop softwrae on these systems, forget it.

    Princeton University Chemistry department and use
    their Evans and Sutherland LDS-1 line drawing
    system, connected to a PDP-10. We would play
    spacewars all night. I wrote hidden line removal
    functions.

    Yes, judges are loathe to jail people for non-payment of fines. This is a fairly central feature of our legal system, because it turns out that people in prison have a hard time making money!

    The question is what to do right now, particularly with kids in preschool through third grade. We had a computer for our six and three year olds, but they spent so much time using it as essentially a substitute TV that it conveniently "broke".
