Well, it's on the CD, but not installed by default.
OMFG. The horror, the horror, the horror. If I want an X server on my Mac I have to put a check mark in a dialog box during the OS install. Oh my God! How could they ask me to do this? Oh the humanity.
Any modern linux distro will have X installed by default
No shit! That's because X is the only fucking windowing system you can get with any modern linux distro, and compared to Aqua it truly sucks the ass.
My Mandrake boxen (1 laptop and one desktop) did not require any extra work to get X running.
Yeah, except when you're done you're still running an X based windows manager and when compared to Aqua every X based windows manager out there, KDE, Gnome, WindowMaker, etc, etc, etc, looks and runs like a warm runny shit in a cold steel toilet bowl.
Uh, like dude. It was a fucking joke. A rather nifty little parody of all of the stupid "is Linux ready for the desktop yet" articles that tech magazines run in the slow months when they need filler content.
Of course my recent Linux experience has been exemplary. I've used both SuSE 9.3 and RHEL ES v3. The RedHat was being installed on Dell servers, found all of the hardware and was easy to set up LVM so I could slice and dice the disk any way I wanted. SuSE 9.3 installed on a Micron desktop PC and found all of the hardware, the user I gave it to, who was using it to replace her SGI Octane that died, absolutely loves Linux.
He is one of the most articulate politicians of the last century. You may fully disagree with him, but you can't challenge much his consistency.
Josef Stalin was also very articulate, and loved poetry. Hitler was supposedly a really nice guy in private and loved dogs. And while you may disagree with them you can't say that they were inconsistent, nope, they were consistently evil.
He is educated and cultivated, when he talks to friends he prefers to talk about literature, poetry and movies than about politics. He would put to shame most other world politicians on a debate or discussion, and very often does when given a chance.
Josef Mengele loved opera. Stalin loved poetry, Hitler liked to paint. Kim Jong Il likes films. Even dictators and despots need downtime and hobbies.
His ideology may be unrealistic but it is not irrational. Christianity is also irrational but follows a dogma. In general nobody calls the pope nuts for this reason.
No, I guess if you define "rationality" as pushing an ideology designed to keep him in power then you can say that he's pretty rational.
The failure to encourage Cuba to become a democracy has a lot to do with the underestimation of the capacity of Fidel Castro as a politician.
Yeah, it's all the fault of the US. It has nothing to do with the fact that Fidel likes being at the top of the heap and having the power of life and death over an island full of people. Not Fidel, he's different, he's soulful, he likes to talk about culture and philosophy. He's a Sensitive New Age Dictator. And if you believe this I have this great biography of Gee Whatta Bush I can sell you in which it's revealed that he's quite the intellectual.
Cuba would perhaps be a democratic country today if successive US goverments would have treated Fidel Castro as the able politician he is and offered him a dignified way out of his isolationism.
Yep, it's all the US's fault. Actually the worst thing that could happen to Fidelito would be for the US to drop the sanctions. Why? Well because every state has to have an enemy. In the US we use "terrorism", which is comfortably amorphous for those who pursue state power through increasing fear, in Cuba it's the USA. If the sanctions, which by any measure have been a total failure, were dropped tomorrow Fidelito and the Cuban state would lose a major pillar of their ideology, that is to say that they are so poor, fucked up and oppressed because the US makes them that way.
The US have done so with far worst dictators.
So what you're saying is that rather than call for the US to apply a consistent policy towards all dictatorships such as Cuba which have horrendous human rights records, such as our good friends in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, our Chinese economic overlords, Sudan and a whole bunch of other places that to our shame we do business with, we should just give Cuba a pass? So much for morality in foreign policy.
Fidel Castro is primarily a marketing genius, he's not much different than any other Latin American strongman dictator and his junta isn't that much different than any other Latin American junta, but he's a commie, so a lot of soft-headed American leftists who have a hard on for that sort of thing will look the other way while he does the same kind of thing that all of the right-wing juntas have done. In this sense the left has shown that when it comes down to their ideology trumping concepts of democracy and human rights that they are no different than conservatives such as Jeane Kirkpatrick who basically made the same argument towards fascist regimes that were favorably disposed towards the United States.
the incredibly insightful babblings of techno-pundit John C. Dvorak. What else can we do to lower the signal to noise ratio and generate more heat and less light? Has Enderle weighed in yet?
Dvorak is on crack if he thinks that there are any businesses that are going to give a shit about the MoG/PJ flap. Businesses adopting Linux and other FOSS products are looking to reduce TCO and also trying to make sure that they don't end up being 0wnz0r3d by Microsoft into perpetuity by having their corporate data locked into proprietary file formats that change from release to release and by being locked into licensing schemes that become ever more onerous and increasingly expensive as time goes on. The antics of the various players in the MoG/PJ flap are going to have about as much impact on the adoption of Linux and FOSS as Steve Ballmer's video, the one where he jumped up and down like a chimp, had on the adoption of Windows XP.
SuSE is out of the picture? That must be why Dell just started offering SuSE as a supported build option across the PowerEdge server line, before you could only get RedHat. SuSE out of the picture? That must be why the SGI ProPack for the Altix line of servers (big, fast, multi-processor, extremely scalable NUMA architecture) is based on SuSE Linux. This guy doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground, typical of the kind of people you find on ZDnet.
I hope for Ms. O'Garas sake that she's very well paid. Because as a journalist she's dead. And - in my opinion of course - her writings represent the equivalent of a crack whore in San Franciscos Tenderloin district offering a blowjob for $7.95 (incl. sales tax).
What is reprehensible and really hard to stomach is that she stooped to such lows as attacking Ms. Jones privacy.
Reminds me of the methods of a science fiction space opera nut cult.
Naahhhh, she'll resurface on Free Republic posting under the handle "fudskank" and after she explains how the liberal media silenced her will end up as a tech commentator for Fox News. She'll be a perfect complement for Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter.
Actually I noticed that I misused the word "decimate" which would mean to only kill one in ten of the Gungans. I should have used the word "eliminate" as I want every fucking one of them to die in as horrible a fashion as possible.
Should be a Gungan kill-fest. Anakin and the clone warriors and the Sith go to Jar Jar's home planet and decimate the place. I'm talking light saber decapitations and gruesome disembowelments. I'm taking Gungans being gut shot and left to die in the hot sun by storm troopers, napalm being fired into Gungan villages from AT-AT walkers, Gungans being impaled on stakes, an imperial encampment surrounded by poles bearing Gungan heads. They finish things off by nuking the planet down to the bedrock, which explains why there are no Gungans in episodes 4, 5 and 6, the Sith the proto-Empire wiped them all out.
Lucas is quoted as saying "But I have to tell a story. I'm not making these, oddly enough, to be giant, successful blockbusters. I'm making them because I'm telling a story, and I have to tell the story I intended." As he lit a cigar with a large stack of burning 20's."
I won't begrudge him the darkness or the money so long as he kills all the fucking Gungans!
Dude. I don'd know which part of Europe you grew up in but it certainly wasn't Germany. I lived in Germany from 1998 to 1999 and returned for travel in 2000 and it was always cheaper during that time for me to drive. You can look at the prices of train travel in Germany on this website.
Now, the price for a one way trip from Regensburg to Bad Hersfeld on the ICE with two stops taking 3 hours and one minute is 59 euros. With German gasoline prices running around 1.20 euro per liter that would purchase around 49 liters of gasoline. Unless your car is a total piece of shit you can drive
from Bad Hersfeld to Regensburg in a little over two hours (my best record was 1:55 minutes) and you won't burn more than 40 litres of gasoline doing it, making the trip cost 48 euros. As soon as you throw in some kids or a friend it becomes cheaper to drive. Note also that that three hour travel time assumes that you're taking an ICE train (Inter City Express) get on a Regional train or, God forbid, the Schnellzug (which is German for "fast train" and in a twisted little bit of teutonic irony describes the milk run that makes every single stop along the line) that trip can take up to seven hours.
I asked the Germans I worked with how they travelled on vacations and most of them either drove for short distances within the country or flew for longer distances because it was quicker and cheaper.
This isn't to say that we couldn't do trains here. Our transportation system is so riddled with subsidies, both hidden and direct and hobbled with anti-competitive behaviors (railroad labor rules, monopolistic domination of hub airports by large carriers) that it is hard to figure out how much things really costs, which unfortunately ends up giving the short shrift to rail transit.
Cliché characters, no plot whatsoever, banal tagline dialogues and total lack of ideas, meaning and conflict. There are some visually stunning, stylish, yet intelligent and thought-provocative movies out there. Why settle for this teenage-dream kind of stuff?
Two words: "Tits" and "Explosions". So you go ahead and watch Sideways again.
What's interesting about the new dual G5 Macs, or Tiger for that matter? Just monor upgrades in both cases.
Actually the G5 speed bumps aren't that exciting. But your point about Tiger shows that you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about, Tiger makes some fairly major changes in the filesystem to support the Spotlight integrated search and to make the command line utilities fully HFS+ aware.
Why is it front-page-newsworthy when Apple updates their product line, but it is not newsworthy when Dell, Microsoft, or Intel updates theirs?
Well Microsoft and Intel (and AMD) get quite a bit of coverage when they release new products, even if they're just collections of bug fixes (Windows XP SP2) or minor speed bumps in their chips. Dell generally doesn't get coverage when they release a new product for the same reason that your local whitebox clone shop doesn't get coverage, it's just not that interesting to read about slightly faster PCs built around generic hardware components.
Bush has a backbone? This is the guy who used his daddy's connections to get him into the Texas Air National Guard (he had a 25 percent score on his pilot aptitude test) to stay out of Vietnam and then weaseled out of flight duty so he could go to Arkansas and work on a political campaign? Bush is a fucking pussy! So are the Bush supporters on/. who post as AC.
Not a flame or a troll, but I've seen a lot of posts in this story and others talking about how good WPS was. I used OS/2 briefly about 10 years ago and liked it quite a bit. The big turn-off for me was gaming support, I couldn't get drivers for my video or sound cards, other than that it seemed like a pretty solid product, my experience with it was that it was more stable running Win 3.x applications at the time than Windows 95 was on similar hardware.
So I guess from watching this that tape backups do suck, if you don't store the backups in a secure location (if you can't afford Iron Mountain you can get a 23 cubic foot fire resistant safe from Costco for about $1,000.00) and if you don't occasionally verify that your backups work by restoring a sample filesystem and comparing the checksums of the files and if you are basically a fucking idiot. My biggest problem with tape backups is forgetting to load new media into the library.
Uh oh. Sounds as if you're a member of COG, the Cult Of George. These are the people who are so enamored of George W. Bush, despite the fact that he's a coward, and a liar, and a fuckup daddy's boy who makes Ted Kennedy look good that they would press their lips tight up against his asshole to eat whatever shit came out of it. What the fuck is it with you types? Why are you so queer for this guy? He's an idiot, he's a fuckup, he can barely speak English, he's a daddy's boy who used Bush family money to get him out of whatever trouble he ever got into, just like Ted Kennedy did with Kennedy family money. What is it? Did he make you all tingly when he put his flight suit on? Did you get strange feelings down below your belt buckle that you were at a loss to explain?
I have told Republican Vietnam vets who voted for Bush that they're idiots, because they are, they're obviously too stupid to tell the difference between those who walked the walk (Kerry, John McCain) and those who just talked the talk (Bush, Cheney, Limbaugh, Hastert, DeLay).
Bush and Cheney (and Limbaugh, DeLay, Hastert) thought that the Vietnam war was a great thing for other people to be involved with, but not for them. Bush got into that Air National Guard unit not because he was a great pilot (he scored 25 percent on his pilot aptitude test), it's because his daddy had connections. Cheney had five deferments, one of which he lost for drunken driving.
Colin Powell summed up everything that needed to be said about these people in his autobiography.
"I particularly condemn the way our political leaders supplied the manpower for that (the Vietnam) war. The policies -- determining who would be drafted and who would be deferred, who would serve and who would escape, who would die and who would live -- were an antidemocratic disgrace. I can never forgive a leadership that said, in effect: These young men -- poorer, less educated, less privileged -- are expendable (someone described them as "economic cannon fodder"), but the rest are too good to risk. I am angry that so many sons of the powerful and well placed and many professional athletes (who were probably healthier than any of us) managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units. Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to our country.
Anyone who starts a sentence with a disclaimer such as "I am not anti gay", "I'm not a racist, but" probably is whatever they are disclaiming.
My brother works for a fortune 500 company which will remain nameless. This company opened a call center in Orlando for customer ordering and customer service calls.
Dude. I heard this story about this family that hired this babysitter, and she was on acid, and she ended up microwaving the baby. It's totally true.
The call center manager found a new job and gave the 2 week notice that he was quiting. The director chose his secretary to replace him?? Not only was she not qualified to be a secretary but she got the position from banging the director on the side.
Dude, what the fuck is it with you and question marks?
Eventually the VP of HR found out about this and written up the call center director and threatened to fire him and he also fired the secretary who was promoted to manager.
The secretary then sued because she was hispanic and discriminated agaisnt. She won 1.3 million dollars!
Now tell me how frivilious lawsuits agaisnt wrongfull termination are not out of control?
OK, I'll tell you, frivolous lawsuits against wrongful termination are not out of control. You give us a bullshit story which you probably heard off of a right wing talk radio show. You won't even name the name of the company, which is strange because if this secretary did exist, and she did sue the company and she did win 1.3 million dollars then it would be a matter of public record, hardly something that we'd have to shamefully whisper about on/. Save your anecdotes, give us statistics or fuck off.
I am not saying gays and lesbians should not have equal rights. I am only saying the more laws try to help the more lawyers will use them to hurt the people they are supposed to help.
So we should get rid of those laws against robbery and other crimes because unscrupulous lawyers will just use them to hurt the victims of robbery and assault. OK, that makes sense, if you're a paranoid schizophrenic with a penchant for chewing on lead based paint and drinking Nyquil, that is. So if we don't have laws that say that discriminating against someone because of their race, creed, color, sexual orientation or disability is illegal then exactly how do we reach this wonderful nirvana where everyone loves one another? Sure, some people are enlightened and won't need an anti-discrimination law to prevent them from firing someone just because they're a queer, or a nigger, or a spic, or a kike or a cripple but others will need to be bitch-slapped right up against the side of the head to dissuade them from such behavior.
For example I have aspergers which is a mild form of autism. Many employers wont hire me because I could sue the company for wrongfull termination.
Is that why you can't spell? Is that why you don't know what a question mark is for? Tell me, how the fuck is an employer going to know if you have Asperger's syndrome? Do you walk into interviews and say "Oh, BTW, I have a mild form of autism called Asperger's syndrome, that's why I'm such a spaz"? Inquiring minds want to know. I think that many employers won't hire you because you're an idiot.
Now, I am missing my left leg below the knee as a result of a motorcycle accident. If I'm not wearing my prostheses it's pretty obvious that I'm different from regular people because I'm on crutches and well, because, well because I don't have a fucking left foot any more! This isn't like Asperger's, it's right out there and the only way you could miss it is if you were blind. It's not like people are sitting there and saying "Gee, there's something a little bit different about that guy".
Now, I've interviewed for four jobs since my accident and I did three of those interviews on crutches and without a prostheses becau
Yeah, and Bush was a cowardly little Texas faggot who couldn't even be bothered to show up for duty with a champagne guard unit. Bush is such a candy-assed chickenshit loser that he actually gave up a berth in the air national guard where all he had to do was fly fighter jets one weekend a month (a job which any real man would kill for) so he could move to Alabama and work on the political campaign of one of his daddy's friends. Face facts Swift Boat Fuck; George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and most of the other Republicans who came of draft age during the Vietnam era would have low-crawled across the sticky floor of a gay bordello to suck a fat boy's dick if that's what it would have taken to keep them out of Vietnam.
on/. an item was posted about a potential treatment for Type 1 diabetes that removes the auto-immune cells that attack the Islets of Langerhans. These cells are then regenerated from stem cells produced in the spleen. Lee Iacocca is trying to raise money for this research. More information can be found at
www.joinleenow.org. If this works in humans and can be perfected it would have a big advantage over transplants as no immunosuppressive drugs would be needed. Ironically enough the doctor who discovered this effect in mice found it while suppressing their immune systems to prepare them for islet cell transplants.
Watching morons who think that anyone gives a shit about microprocessor architecture outside of /. is also too funny.
OMFG. The horror, the horror, the horror. If I want an X server on my Mac I have to put a check mark in a dialog box during the OS install. Oh my God! How could they ask me to do this? Oh the humanity.

Yes, the proper terminology is now "nut burner" or "testicle toaster".
Some people should really refrain from sniffin' glue.

Yeah! You fight the man! 4:20 on 4/20 forever!
Do you know why it's never been a regular habit?
Cuz everyone thinks you're a narc and won't share with you?
Cuz you always bogart the joint/pipe/bong?
Cuz you drool all over the joint and can't keep it lit?
Because I know people that have been regular users.
And you're pissed that when they're holding they won't share with you.
I have seen how they're effected long-term.
Yeah, it starts by removing their ability to distinguish between "effect" and "affect".
I don't need a study to tell me that habitual marijuana use leads to impaired intellect.
And judging from your post I don't need a study to determine that you're a tard, even without marijuana consumption.
