    Here's a suggestion - there are many companies that offer to print such free online text onto smaller than letter-size paper, and they even bind it for you for much lower printing costs than doing it yourself. They call them "books".

    These "books" aren't that much heavier to ship than high quality fresnel lens or PDAs.

    I'm surprised to hear that Novell is being discounted and ignored. Sure, you might laugh, but don't forget that they now own SuSe (which is still the most popular distro in Europe), and Ximian, which owns Evolution and has a stronger influence over the direction of GNOME and Mono.

    I've recently built myself a nice HTPC with two tuners (Hauppauge PVR-250), and I'm quite happy with it. I intend to move onto HDTV capture cards once the most popular PVR software packages (SageTV, Beyond TV) supports it.

    Does anyone know what the state of the HDTV capture cards for PC looks like right now? Obviously, hardware encoding and picture quality is key...

    h.264 (now formally known as AVC, the video-equivalent of AAC) is maturing. Well, at least Ahead's Nero Digital implementation of h.264 is maturing. The marketing spin has it called Nero Digital, but it's fully h.264 compliant. And the results are impressive - beta testing shows comparable quality of XviD at half the bitrate.

    Let's face it, the PS2 has been out for how many years now? and Japan, of all markets, is definitely saturated with PS2s.

    If you already have a PS2, and you're in the market for a PVR, would you:

    * buy a PVR that has another PS2 in it, therefore paying an unnecessary premium,

    or

    * buy just a PVR at a lower cost?

    they like to surprise you with monsters appearing out of nowhere, which has always bugged me

    I wholeheartedly agree. A horror PC game that tries to scare you? I was hoping for some blinking arrows on the side of a screen with the words "MONSTER APPROACH IN T-k seconds"!

    Maybe you just need to stop instinctively reaching for the ipod. I wouldn't know, since I never bothered with reaching for the ipod in the first place... Adjusting the volume for the ipod is not too different from adjusting the volume for the radio or the cd player.

    Your theory falls apart when you realize that the entire world was in a much worse economic slump back in 2002. And this sales figure was global, which also meant that legal alternatives in other countries were few and far between.

    Itunes is selling 2.5 million songs a week. The declining sale of CDs does not necessarily mean the music piracy is going up; it means there are also new means of selling music, digitally, and very legally.

    And a 7.6% decrease to 32 billion means that there are $2.6 billion drop in sales. Care to point to hard facts on how other means of selling music is making up for it?

    I hate it when declining CD sales is automatically attributed to piracy.

    I hate it more when increasing CD sales is automatically attributed to people buying more music due to sampling via P2P.

    That probably just means you were hanging out with a more timid crowd.

    Besides, MIT used to be one of the biggest drinking schools, until a freshman in 1997 intoxicated himself to death when pledging. If an outsider lke you knows about the parties, that just means we weren't doing a good job keeping it quiet.

    why does the chipmaker need to protect us from microsoft buffer overflow errors? why can't they just double check their code?

    That's like saying "why do we need cops? why can't people just not break the law, so no one needs to be around to reinforce them?"

    Accidents do happen, and it's not only Microsoft's own problem. It doesn't hurt to have another layer of security for bad programming...

    No, the two basic mistakes were:

    1) You have to turn off the N-Gage, and take out the cover and battery in order to CHANGE GAMES. Not to mention the fragile games were the size of a triscuit.

    2) Anyone using an N-Gage as a phone will look like an idiot holding a taco sideways.

    I'd be willing to pay as much as $0.025 (2.5 cents) per song for the right to have 256-bit mp3's of the top 10,000 songs of all time.

    Holy bejeezus!! If a song is 3 minutes on average, that's 30,000 minutes = 500 hours of NON-REPEATING music. If you're paying $250, that's 50 cents an hour if you listen to each song only once, 25 cents an hour if you listen to each song only twice, etc.

    25 cents an hour for entertainment? You can hardly find ANY entertainment worth 25 cents an hour these days. At least not an experience that includes the top 10,000 songs of all time!

    Hey Kevin, the 60's called, they want their standard of living back!

    I'm willing to pay for music, video on demand, etc., but I'm not rich.

    Maybe you're not rich, but you definitely are cheap.
