People almost always do this to themselves. This is one of the reasons man came up with laws to regulate itself.

It seems the larger question at this point, is how do you properly moderate that? If the message board in the local town square was precipitating killings, it would be roped off until further notice.

I think the bigger question in all of this is "who is going to do something to help get this under control before society collapses under the weight of being afraid that regulating misinformation is a problem?" No doubt there has to be a balance, but this type of mass manipulation should not be at the fingertips of anyone with apple pay and an internet connection. Do Whatsapp and Facebook really need to be selling political advertising space?

  3. I hear people tell me that we can't move faster, because we don't want to leave part of the herd behind. Being cynical about everything is not productive.

It doesn't matter how people try to slice it, this type of data mining on this scale has ever been seen before. I hear people argue everything from "People can believe what they want", to "It's clear what fake news is", to "they are a business and they should be able to exploit the population however they want. Only the idiots would fall for it anyway." There should be limits on how this is all used. I would like to see political advertising on these social media sites banned in all forms.

We know very well what this type of mass messaging does to human beings. No one is immune from these kind of messages. Even if you did not look at the internet, you would still know what cynicism was.

I think its great that IBM is speaking on this. I think that anyone bringing this conversation to the forefront is doing a real service to the people. You can not claim to be real intellect, when your argument is "you're an idiot."

  4. Information Psyops Hand Delivered on 14 Years of Mark Zuckerberg Saying Sorry, Not Sorry (washingtonpost.com) · · Score: 1

I would like to see Zuck and company do a few things differently. I'd like to see changes to who can buy ads and target people. All political ads need to come to an end on that site; if its not something tangible, no ads. The news-feed needs to go.

Facebook is not a place for news. I've never seen a productive political conversation on there. There is absolutely no reason foreign governments should be able to target individuals one by one on this level. Facebook needs to go back to serving up pictures of cats, dogs, and grandma's.

There are many times in history where people simply wouldn't have tolerated the damage done by a company like this. It is amazing to me that in a society so divided with talking points that most people have hardly thought about, that more people don't think this is completely crazy that something hasn't been done about this Facebook mess. It's like having an open bottle of poison sitting right in your living room. If it was anything else that was so harmful to people's daily lives, we would ban it and ask questions later. To me, psyops just isn't a good thing in these contexts, even for those that think it doesn't affect them.

Mark Z. Should be talking to anyone he can. For the sake of people that use this stuff, I would like to see Facebook stick to just ads for products and services. There is absolutely no reason that political ads have to be shown to people on Facebook. Isn't the entire service to connect friends and families? How does this fall under thta? Let people review these "call to arms" ads, under some link on ones Facebook page, and see how many people wantonly click on them at that point.

I get that he already talked with other governments and he's worried he'll set himself up, but at this point, the fact he hasn't cleaned the place up speaks volumes.
