I got two emails from my bank today (10:52am and 4:59pm EST).
Dear Customer,
An incident involving unauthorized access into a third party processor system has occurred. A company which processes transactions for physical retail merchants and Internet merchants was the victim of a computer hacker between September 2004 and May 2005. They have identified your check and/or credit card as one of the cards possibly exposed. Information compromised includes account numbers and expiration dates, as well as cardholder names and addresses.
We understand that you will most likely be concerned when you read this. Rest assured that if you information has fallen into the wrong hands, you will not be liable for any unauthorized transactions using your Check Card or VISA Card*. However, it is very important that you monitor your account(s) closely and notify us immediately of any unauthorized transaction. If such a transaction does occur, you will need to complete a VISA dispute form, available through the maintenance area of our online banking system, in order to receive provisional credit for the amount of the transaction. We recommend, as a precaution, that you call Customer Support to block your card and we will re-issue a new one. Our Banking Specialists and Loan Representatives will make that decision with you on a case-by-case basis, as we do not want to hamper your use of the card.
We also understand that you will have other questions, such as the identity of the processor. When we receive notifications of this variety from VISA, VISA does not and will not reveal the name of the merchant or processor unless the incident has already been made public by the merchant.
Again, we do ask that you monitor your account carefully in the weeks ahead by making use of our telephone, wireless, and online banking systems. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a Banking Specialist or Loan Representative for more information.
Thank you for banking with us.
*This limit on liability does not apply to PIN-based ATM or point-of-sale transactions.
That would be Firefox 1.0.3.... Mozilla Suite aka just mozilla and FireFox are two separate programs and have very different versions. Saying Mozilla 1.0.3 is very misleading. Please use the correct name or it makes your news story look very silly. Who cares if a version of mozilla from 2002 has security holes.

Normally when a person or entity uses the amazon honor system for donations/payments amazon takes a nice cut of the pie. I emailed them today to check if they did the same thing for the disaster relief and apparently they aren't!
I included both emails below:
TO: Amazon FROM: Urgo I have a question about the disaster relief donation page that you have setup on amazon.com. I know normally with the amazon honor system amazon gets a cut of all the donations. Is amazon taking a cut of the money in this case or is all of the money people donate going right to the red cross?
FROM: Amazon TO: Urgo Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.com.
Please rest assured that all the donated money will go to the Red Cross to help victims of tragedies in southern Asia, India, and Africa.
Please know that Amazon.com is waiving its usual fees.

I saw this flash video last week and wrote the following on my own website in responce to it. I figured it'd be relevent here so here's a version edited to be posted on slashdot.
For the past year now I've been predicting that within the next ten Google will 'take over the world'. Most people I tell this two think I'm crazy and this will never happen saying that Google is the best company ever and they will never turn evil. I tend to disagree.
Let me take just a few minutes to explain why I think this.
Facts - Google owns: - Google is the most used search engine - Gmail, while maybe not the most used email provider (maybe it is now?) it is definitely the most highly desired - Orkut, while mostly blown over now is still a thriving social network site - Google News is viewed as a #1 news site for many people - Blogger is one of the leading blog sites and blogs are all over the news these days - Keyhole offers a satalite imageing service - Google Desktop Search - Google Adsense - probably the most widly used advertising on the web these days (used even on this website although I haven't seen any return yet) - And much much more, plus all the things normal people like myself have come up with such as the random google image in the right sidebar.
My point to all of this is the following: Through GMail Google stores and never deletes your email. They catalog it and can do a LOT with that data. With time google can write robots to parse the data to find out every bit of data about you, who you know, what you talk about, etc. Gmail bundled with Orkut Google really has a solid grip on your social network with more detail and structure then email alone. Google knows who joebob62@aol.com really is, where he lives, what his pass times are, etc and can link it up with your email conversations. Now to get even further into your life they have the Google Desktop Search which has already been called on being invasive bypassing security on people's PC's and cataloging files that it shouldn't.
Step back for a second, Google now knows who you know, what you talk about, details about every person, everything you say on your computer, what files you have, what is in each file, basically all of your Digital Data. Oh, also if you use the google search bar (IE plug-in) in advanced mode (default.. plus ohh! I want advanced features....) they track every webpage you go, although the desktop search tool does that as well. 0wned.
Next we start to see Google's current revenue. Blogs, Keyhole, Adsense. Wow, if the inflated stock doesn't make them enough $$$ then this sure helps. Although I don't believe Google charges for blogger right now they are setting their selves up for it in the future if blogging ever takes off as a legitimate news source... News.. Google news is one of the most used news services to gather news from many sources, sorted automatically for relevance...
Now, just think if Google DID want to turn evil (assuming they aren't already) how much of the market they already own. In the 90's people switched search engines all the time, but moving email providers, etc is a lot harder to do. In a few more years they'll have people so dependant on them and their products just like Microsoft people will be stuck with Google for better or.. worse.
More info on Google being evil is at google-watch.
I personally haven't come up with a scenario myself, and I am uncertain if this one is how its going to happen, but I was happy to see that others feel the same way as I do, that within the next ten years Google will takeover the world, or in this movie, the media forcing the New York Times offline.
Please take the time to watch this movie, and ignore the somewhat cheesiness of it. I really think they are being insightful and this COULD happen.
I agree with many of the other coments here such as liking the way mozilla does google searches as oposed to the seperate box in firefox but my main reasons is this:
I really like the fact that I can close the mail application and it still sticks around and pops up an icon in the system tray when there is a new message. If you use thunderbird theres no way that I've seen to get it off of the task bar/sys tray when you are not using it. I always have a browser open but I don't like keeping my mail program open. Mozilla lets me do this so until TB has a minimize to tray I'll stick with the suite.
Oh that reminds me.. Today comcast is moving g4techtv from the pay-extra digital package to the basic package according to a letter they mailed out last month... So now everyone can see how comcast screwed over techtv and how gaming isn't really that interesting to devote a whole chan to it. I miss the old zdtv/techtv.
I have a DeLorme Earthmate USB and the same goes for it.
I spent several days playing around with various generic drivers in linux and was able to get it to respond 'a little' but nothing useful ever came out of it. Even in windows the support is somewhat flaky for 3rd party apps. I'll probably just get a new linux compatible GPS unit at some point in the future rather then buy accessories for this one.
There is much more to a "hacker conference" then what the media portrays hacking as. Hacking in the true sense, and in the true 2600 sense is the quest for knowledge and questioning things that aren't fair. Yes many things will be spoken about the conference that will 'improve your 1337 hax0ring skillz' but there's really so much more.
I've been a 2600 goer, off the hook and off the wall listener for over two years now and through it made friends with a lot of great people (shout outs to the ma2600 crowd). At 2600 meetings, and the hope conferences (although I've never attended one) there are panels on everything from social engineering to Abuse of Authority to the patriot act. See a list of panels from the last conference here.
So before making a stupid comment like "I doubt he'd even want me to "improve my 1337 hax0ring skillz"." take a look at the site and reexamine your definition of hackers. There's a lot more then what the mass media labels people as. I will be in the process of moving during the conference so I will be unable to attend otherwise I think it'd be a great educational experience to hear really bright people speak.

It is really sad to see this day finally come. I haven't watched techtv much recently but I was a loyal fan of ZDTV back in the day when the network first launched.
In addition to the computer related programming, I really liked having one channel where you didn't see the same old crap being advertised. They had mostly technology commercials and weird little artsy zdtv "amaze yourself" ones. Then they actually let users make their own little "we'll be back after the break" clips via webcam..... Its been mostly downhill since the big advertisers stepped in and redirected the network.... too bad.
I've only tuned into the channel once since the takeover occurred and was annoyed how their logo G4TechTV was now at the top of the screen, large, colorful, and covering up the computer screens that they were displaying.
Oh well. I still have my "ZDTV Dot Coms not Sit Coms" bumper sticker.. Good luck fired techtv employees.

Sorry but I need to say this..
'Mozilla 1.0.3 vulnerabilities'
That would be Firefox 1.0.3.... Mozilla Suite aka just mozilla and FireFox are two separate programs and have very different versions. Saying Mozilla 1.0.3 is very misleading. Please use the correct name or it makes your news story look very silly. Who cares if a version of mozilla from 2002 has security holes.

Normally when a person or entity uses the amazon honor system for donations/payments amazon takes a nice cut of the pie. I emailed them today to check if they did the same thing for the disaster relief and apparently they aren't!
I included both emails below:
TO: Amazon
FROM: Urgo
I have a question about the disaster relief donation page that you have setup on amazon.com. I know normally with the amazon honor system amazon gets a cut of all the donations. Is amazon taking a cut of the money in this case or is all of the money people donate going right to the red cross?
FROM: Amazon
TO: Urgo
Thanks for writing to us at Amazon.com.
Facts - Google owns:
- Google is the most used search engine
- Gmail, while maybe not the most used email provider (maybe it is now?) it is definitely the most highly desired
- Orkut, while mostly blown over now is still a thriving social network site
- Google News is viewed as a #1 news site for many people
- Blogger is one of the leading blog sites and blogs are all over the news these days
- Keyhole offers a satalite imageing service
- Google Desktop Search
- Google Adsense - probably the most widly used advertising on the web these days (used even on this website although I haven't seen any return yet)
- And much much more, plus all the things normal people like myself have come up with such as the random google image in the right sidebar.
My point to all of this is the following:
Through GMail Google stores and never deletes your email.
Well thats all well but broadvoice charges $20/mo. I've been using them since August and have been very happy.
Broadvoice+Sipura from voxilla+asterisk=awsome home phone system.
