No, you completely missed my point.

Family is the last place you go to. When someone goes to family, it means they've run out of reasons. It is not a generic catch-all phrase used in political circles. It says a lot about what's going. You just don't get it because you've never gone back to family before so you never understand why it's used. To you, it's still an excuse.

    Go back to your family.

But what is it with Republicans (and also Democrats) quitting "to spend more time with their families"?

You're young. I can tell this from the fact that you don't get it. Or at the very least, I hope you're young. If you're older and have a family of your own and don't understand why this happens, I feel really bad for you.

But let me try to explain it to you. All human beings have a need to be loved and wanted. The people that will always love you and want you regardless of what you've done will be your family first and foremost. Most people fall into the following pattern:

    • Build a family.
    • Recognize that family is important.
    • Desire time to spend time with family.
    • Recognize that the ability to spend time with family doesn't exist because of obligations to build a secure future of self and the family.
    • Create a career. Spend a shit ton of hours working to secure financial future.
    • Fast forward 20 years or so.
    • Recognize that by creating a family, you've successfully lost sight of the reason you wanted a career in the first place: to spend time with the family.
    • Walk away from the career to spend time with the family.

And there is the crux of the problem. You already accepted that terrorism is a crime (civilian issue).

There are portions of the government that treats terrorism as a military matter (Republicans: Guantanamo Bay prisoners are military issue, they don't get civilian treatments like someone picked up for murder would) and others that treats terrorism as a crime (Democrats: Hey, why don't Guantanamo Bay prisoners have habeas corpus?).

You need to be very careful of this dichotomy and read critically into what is stated. When crime and terrorism are identified separately, they're not doing it to be redundant. They're stated as a matter of belief about whether or not terrorism is a crime. For law enforcement folks, terrorism prevent is a matter of public safety. For the military types, terrorism is a matter of target identification so they can blow the terrorist away.

The Xbox's drives and fans sound like a small jet plane taking off. The PS3 is dead silent. The only way you can tell it's on is with the LEDs on the device. Where's the social interaction in 1 player games? When you're in your basement playing FFXII who exactly are you interacting with? Online games are not the only addicting ones. The social interaction analysis is only applicable to one facet of the addiction. The beauty of the addiction is that the player is unable to separate real social interactions with artificial social interactions ("NPC"). Whether the applause comes from a human or an automaton doesn't matter to the addicted player. It only matters that there is the applause.

The gist of what I was saying before is that video games satisfies as a surrogate activity. Even when you take away the social aspects of a game, reaching level X + 1 is still important to the addicted player. It's a goal they've set up for themself and being able to reach that goal is very important.

Video game addiction is very different than gambling in my eyes. Video games are pursued by those addicted to it to fulfill a psychological. The players feel more powerful. They have a sense of impact on their world. They are the hero saving the world, doing something important. If you look at the games people are addicted to playing, they aren't likely to be Bejeweled. The players are more likely addicted to FPS or MMORPG.

People in general have a desire to feel effective within the confines of their world. Players addicted to video games aren't really addicted to video games. They're addicted to being successful. Video games just give them an avenue to feel successful while the rest of their life falls apart.
