  1. Opportunity to go “small” medium forma on Nikon Announces Development of Full Frame Mirrorless Camera (petapixel.com) · · Score: 1

I think that instead of going FF, Nikon has the differentiation opportunity to go “small medium format”, with a sensor of the size as used by the compact hasselblad mirrorless camera. Older FF lenses could still work in a sensible crop mode.

  2. An interesting opportunity on Microsoft Launches Open-Source Quantum Katas Project On GitHub To Teach Q# Programming (betanews.com) · · Score: 4, Insightful

I had a very quick look at the tutorials overview and contents. Despite the cynism here on the forum, I find this initiative an interesting and laudable way to learn about a fascinating topic. It sure is very different and difficult to grasp, but probably worth spending effort on, even if only for personal enrichment.

As the other poster said, wechat and alipay are not that popular over here, however WeChat is slowly growing in acceptance. Apple Pay is popular, everyone I know with an iphone uses it regularly. I use it often too, .

If you use octopus, like I do, with occasional manual cash top up then there is no way to track. If you use auto top up from your bank account then conceivably there is a way to track. In any case the government would not be that interested in me. In general very happy with octopus.

  6. Hong Kong - almost cashless on 'The Cashless Society is a Con -- and Big Finance is Behind It' (theguardian.com) · · Score: 2

I currently live in Hong Kong and find that cash can largely be replaced with two notable exceptions.
Most popular is the use of the octopus card - it is the public transport card that many, so very many shops accept as well. And then there is visa /mastercard/apple pay cash quick payments in many shops as well.
    Frankly, I love that.
The exceptions: infuriatingly (not just me thinks that), local taxis demand cash. Also the smallest street stalls or wet market stalls are cash only.

  11. AI as an invaluable support tool for doctors on Chinese AI Beats 15 Doctors In Tumor Diagnosis Competition (thenextweb.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is encouraging news. i had read previously of Watson helping doctors in diagnosing a baffling case of Leukemia that seemed totally untreatable, Watson correctly indicated that the patient had 2 kinds of Leukemia at once, which the human doctors didn’t realise.
Machine learning will not soon replace human doctors, I think, but you can see it becoming a powerful support tool for doctors, hopefully finding ailments earlier as well. Fascinating.

I liked the youtube clip linked. Charming and somewhat reminiscent of Blade Runner.
I currently live in Hong Kong, several skyscrapers do a bit of a lightshow and the tallest building (ICC) also features beautiful evening animations over its height, but they are monochrome.
Most local people and visitors like these animations and light shows, quite different from the soul crushing negativity one again on display here.

Regardless whether this is a slashvertisement or enthusiast submission, it is quite an interesting product - apparently you can make 300m / 1000 feet long networks with it, using the one cable that transports both power and data. I find it quite a cool solution for makers.

âoeNone of the files contained content information -- like text messages and photos â Well, if I remember well, last time I changed an iphone, after the setup process it had my past conversations, which i thought was neat, yet it also means that Apple does store the data, perhaps in a way that can only be decrypted using your password.
I write âoeif I remember wellâ since I may be confusing with icloud. It is definitely the case, and desirably so of course as it is its reason of existence, that your photos and other apps that use icloud are kept bu Apple. Again it all depends whether this is encrypted against their possible own snooping.

  21. Should a brand test on 3rd party hardware? on Recent iOS Update Kills Functionality On iPhone 8s Repaired With Aftermarket Screens (vice.com) · · Score: 2

I don't think that Apple should be testing compatibility of IOS updates (or any other tech vendor or producer of for example cars) on permutations of 3rd party hardware. It is the job of the part producer to check that their replacement part is indeed 100% compatible.
This being said, was the compatibility breakage done on purpose? I don't think they'd do that effort, since it can only piss off recurring customers, but even so it might be possible..
In any case this is a good example of the value of AppleCare+ for a mobile device. We used it to get my wife's Apple Watch screen replaced after our toddler threw it on the floor.
