I suggest Linux Mint 13 Mate. easy to adapt to coming from XP, and being a Long Term Support version nearly maintenance free.

Wayland website says "Wayland is intended as a simpler replacement for X, easier to develop and maintain."... maybe the Gnome people know something about that, but they sure don't understand how to relate to their client base.
