hard drives breaks; needs to buy whole new computer...
The kind of people that don't recognize (or stop) an operating system upgrade are the same kind of people that need to pay Geek Squad to replace their hard drive and reinstall the OS and applications -- at a price that's likely close to the price of buying a new low-end computer.
how about walking away and coming back a few hours later and the damage is already done?
Nah, then you'd see an increased network usage. This is probably just Firefox's fsync bug repeated: in order to ensure data integrity, SQLite has a mode that fsyncs on commit. (After all, if the data isn't written to storage, it isn't really committed.) If you combine that with autocommit after every minor transaction, you get a ton of fsyncs and massive data usage.
I suppose if I was a regular windows user it would be different... the clumsy and non intuitive part. BUT it is so damned S L O W.
W7 is slow also but I think W10 is even slower.

Open source can be desirable. However, as we've seen in the recent acquisition of FoundationDB by Apple, without a strong foundation to serve as a home for the project, open source software is in danger of both poor code quality or being taken private and yanked by a proprietary buyer.
true.
however experience has shown that ALL software (open and propitiatory) are subject to crude work, poor support, and/or NSA nuggets

Good move. My wife had similar complaints.
I went one step better and also installed LMDE on her laptop.
after configuring it to look identical to her Mint I set it as her default boot OS. >>> she did not notice the change at all.
after a couple weeks I asked how she liked. she thought a bit and replied "I did notice that there were no updates needed, but I thought maybe you were doing that for me."
LMDE = Stable.
next spring LMDE2 will be even more stable.
99% of the real people only use 6 or 8 applications... or even less.
if shortcuts to those apps are in the toolbar, there is no need to drill down and find things.
OK, seriously... Didn't they just fade into the sunset? I know there is a Gnome3 desktop, but isn't it just time for it to disappear?
Nope, I firmly hate Groupon, but not thinking campaign this is worth my effort or $$$

Mate would have been a better choice, with the desktop clean of icons, and the shortcuts she needs in the toolbar. Who needs menus?

they are just a bit lonely...
I don't hire folks that hop around. It is just not worth my effort. If I want temporary help I use one of those "warm body" agencies
