  1. Re:And what's to stop them from... on AT&T Quietly Introduces $10/Month DSL · · Score: 1

Your disconnect problem might actually be due to your modem (or like the previous poster said, line quality issues, but sometimes a better quality modem can help deal with this). I had a similar issue where the modem would disconnect during high bandwidth usage. I replaced it with a different modem known to work properly. Never had the problem again. The modem I was using before was made by Efficient Networks, not much larger than a deck of cards, and was the modem sent to me when I signed up for DSL. The modem I replaced it with is an Actiontec, uncertain of the model number, but it's the non-wireless version of the GT701-WG.

VMWare works fine in 2.6, given that you install the updates at http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/. Just get vmware-any-any-update45.tar.gz and run the install script. Then re-run vmware-config.pl. Make sure that your 2.6 kernel doesn't have preempting enabled (this crashes for me) and you're all set. I've been running VMWare on 2.6.0-test10 and test11 with no problems at all.

Unfortunately, given even worse experiences that I and others have had with the quality of the equipment and support from Gateway, Compaq, and HP, Dell is still the only massive PC computer manufacturer I can recommend to someone who doesn't want a truely custom-built machine. I've never had experience with their non-corporate support, but in my experience and those that I work with, for most users the Dell machines themselves are fairly good. (Though as you say, recently the quality has been dwindling. I can provide many examples of their new flimsy plastic PCI slot covers breaking or not working properly.) For myself I would never again go with a mass-produced computer.

"Calls from some home PC owners will continue to be handled by the technical support center in Bangalore, India, and Weisblatt said Dell has no plans to scale back the operation there."

So, it looks like quality won't be increasing for the average Joe. Dell will probably keep sending support calls from home users to India until it makes enough "cents" to do otherwise.

Yes, that would be a solution, but with the ADSL line example I gave above, it takes about 13 hours to upload a 700 MB file such as The Matrix Reloaded AVI. If they're anything like most users, they'll be trying to download other files by this time, either forcing those downloads to wait in a queue until the upload bandwidth has caught up or again causing an imbalance.

I think I read above that BitTorrent measures your capability to upload, but still allows you do download faster than this speed... I really have no idea though since I haven't ever used it before.
