Which is exactly what the chineese have done for years. They constantly and consistantly rip of good American companies by making copies of their work. What this does is this: It screws the company that makes the device or software, who had to shoulder all the development costs, but make nothing when the damn chinks pirate their designs and make cheap knock off's of their gear. Just in case you're interested to know, I come from a long line of musicians. Do not be so quick to judge. I've played garage parties, and I've (twice) played to 20,000 in a large venue. One of those occasions was telecast to another 40,000 in a remote location. I've been there, and done that. I've had the day job, as a busboy no less, while trying to "make it" as an "artist" at night. You know what? I'm not going to doom my kids to living on less than $10,000 a year like my parents did me. Fuck that. I've going to make some money, and my kids will have NEW clothes every year, and will NEVER have to eat the same cheap ass TV dinner everynight because I'm out at a gig.
Sure. Let's blame the RIAA. It's all their fault. Let's totally ignore the fact that Napster use DOES encourage people to not buy, or compensate the artist in any way what so ever. The only things I have purchased lately were the things I couldn't just steal on Napster. Face it: There is a moral, legal, and ethical question that you have to answer if you are a Napster user: Is what you are doing right? Would you like someone to take something you made without compensating you for it at all? Let's say it costs you $10 to make it. 100 people use it, and two of them pay $5 for it. Some might say this is okay, but if you don't make anything off of what you do, why continue to do it? I do tech support for a living - a nontangible product if there ever was one - and I guarentee you that if they didn't PAY ME to do this, I wouldn't. Now, if Napster gets what's coming to them, and can then use a business model that compensates all involved fairly, more power to them. The current setup isn't it.
One of these yet with a PCMCIA slot in it? It would be really cool to be able to connect to the net with one of these and surf. I had a buddy at SBC who had this, but it wasn't running Linux.

MAPS is not superior to ORBS, both are good products. Vixie took a difference in philosophy, and used it to fuck over his ONLY competition, right when MAPS/RBL was set to start CHARGING for their service. Don't stick your foot in your mouth again, or even believe me. Do a search on/. for the related articles. Thank you! I can't actually take credit for that - what makes geekizoid so cool is the same thing that USED to be cool about this place - it's a weblog by the people, for the people.
That, and the SysAdmin/Author crew isn't rude and full of themselves.
Look out for "The Little Guy" and force companies like SBC and others to actually share their networks in the last mile? More than once, living in the St. Louis area, I have seen friends and neighbors order DSL service, and not get it for weeks on end. Some of whom were even told (when they complained) that SBC could hook them into SBC's DSL within hours but that they would not be able to connect them to a third party any time soon. What's up with that!!!
Why can't we just all say "LOOK! We're DOING IT!" and setup our own root servers? Tell ICANN to piss up a rope, and let them catch up with the rest of us? It's astonishing to think that we've been limmited the way we are for so long because some group of morons can't decide if.porn or.nom can go in the root servers! What's up with that?
Microsoft is forced (think politically for a moment) to take one stance - I think they actually are silently happy about it, and were it not for the DOJ nipping at their heels, I think we both know they'd be behind it 100%.
This makes it much easier for MS and friends to keep you from loading software on more than one system - thus allowing them to suck more money out of your wallet. Think about that before you buy more software (if you do, I'm not saying that you specifically are that brain dammaged) from monopolists.
What if this actually is GOOD for the video card market? With one less type of technology to worry about, perhaps we can standardize a bit more? Also, will this make development easier, perhaps allowing coders to work more on features and cool games rather than supporting every obscure feature for every different card out there.
