It's not at all unlikely they took a "broken" computer into Best Buy. Best Buy told them it was the hard drive (meaning it almost surely wasn't the hard drive), and replaced it for them. They asked about the old one, and were assured it would be destroyed. Would you have asked to take it home before reading this story?

Except that the Pentagon Papers case was about PRIOR restraint. IIRC, it said nothing about going after the Times after the fact. There has previously been a real reluctance to do that (at least with the "mainstream press"), that Gonzales appears to say no longer exists. Haven't these guys heard, "Never argue with someone who buys ink by the barrel"?

Actually, I just got all three of my Cingular phones unlocked. It took a call to customer service (in which I mentioned that I might go to a different provider), emailing the serial number to a tech support address, and then 24-48 hours later the codes came back. For what it's worth, I had finished my 2 year commitment with Cingular, and wanted to use MY PHONES as I wished.

Everyone talks about the increase in communications from shared space, but no one seems to factor in the productivity hit that comes from having to listen to other people's meetings on speakerphone, or time spent in a corner of the hallway making personal calls. I don't spend a lot of time on personal business, but there's times I need to call a doctor to get a prescription written or talk to a child's teacher. My coworkers don't need to hear that any more than I need to hear them discussing their divorce with their attorney. If you're designing a cube hell, for heaven's sake, add a few phone booths!

I dunno, almost all the hardware on our EMC storage arrays is commodity, but we pay an astounding amount per GB to get the capability the software offers. Same on the server side - if you just need storage, or dhcp, or nfs, there are cheaper alternatives. If you want it to just work, and work well, you might pay extra.

Because MS had a monopoly position with desktop operating systems, and was using that position to attempt to monopolize the web browser market. It's not illegal in the US to have a monopoly. If the respondent is leery of the (potentially unlimited) amount of work you're asking for, you still have good options. First, include a bound in terms of man hours - "the current workload is approximately 40 man hours per calendar week, and will not exceed 45 man hours per calendar week". Second, include a "time and materials" option - "Additional projects in this area, but outside the scope of this contract, may be assigned on a time and materials basis. Bidder will provide a 'per labor hour' cost for such projects".

Sorry, as a parent, I think this letter is wholly appropriate. Instead of substituting his judgement for a parent's, he is asking parents to use their judgement about what is right for their kids. He's also putting parents and students on notice that those who might represent the school can be held accountable for their actions. That, in and of itself, is not unreasonable. If some kid gets bumped from the cheerleading squad for calling a teacher a doodyhead, then you can complain.
