No, not really but I do think it would make good business sense. The more you make your customers happy; the more loyal customers you have. Retention should always be more important to a company from a customer service perspective.
And considering AT&T is the only carrier of the iPhone they kind of have me by the balls. Forced retention.
But, trust me, if the iPhone is ever offered by other carriers then I'm switching in a heart beat. And I'll pay any early termination fees to get away from AT&T.
I have an iPhone and I have to pay the manditory fee for an all I can eat data plan. Why should I have to pay more? I know...I know...they want more money. But here in the States AT&T could really gain more customers, more $$$, if they included text messaging with the data plan, and just let us connect our computers to the Internet via the phone.
But they are a short-sighted company, rather than gaining customers as fans they nickel and dime us to death!
I think it shows that those that are religious are truly believers. The reason I think they want to put off death is because they have spent a lifetime of using God and Religion for all the hate they brought into the world. Now that they are close to death their fear of "what will God do to me for all the hate I inflicted?" has seized hold of them. They want to put it off as much as possible so maybe they can make amends and truly do some good. So, it's not so much a fear of death as it is a fear of consequences for their actions.
Those that don't have a strong belief in God or Religion don't have a this fear of their actions have clearer conscience that they have lived a good life and it is probably time to go.
I believe in the Universe as a deity but, personally, the whole heaven/hell thing is really something that seems to be more man-made. What happens when we die? I ain't dead and I refuse to speculate.
The Universe evolved me to have a rational mind and I intend to use it to not have irrational fears.
The Internet needs to be more secure and the belief is that they can do that by rebuilding the Internet? I don't get that at all - why not demand that the Operating Systems be more secure? because most of them are not. Why not demand all email be secure? because none of it is.
What I find is that the arguments do seem to be more about controlling the content, a recurring theme for the last 10-15 years. The Internet has completely changed how content is delivered to the masses and how the masses communicate with each other. The masses are now becoming more independent of the mass media that was supposed to entertain and inform them.
Well, the entertainment hasn't changed at all in that time within mass media but the Internet has ushered in new kinds of entertainment. Hollywood is still pushing a tired set of movies that have been remade again and again. And the Internet has created Virtual Worlds where the story is about participating not passivity.
News organizations used to be the only way for news and information but they have all slowly become personalities instead of reporters. Where is the lone reporter pushing the tough questions onto politicians, or corporations? They don't but bloggers have come about to question that authority and they news media can't stand that. Newspapers are losing out because no one cares about the owner's politics - newspapers never seemed to be about news just what the editors wanted the local populace to think about.
You can bring out a new Internet and tell us it's new and improved but I don't think anyone really will believe it. It's like CAN-SPAM bill that was supposed to rid us of spam but didn't. The easier solution would have been to encrypt email with PGP. If sender may still be able to obtain the Public Signature of the receiver to send but without receiver having the sender's signature - which should be issued by a key authority - then the message shouldn't be delivered. There is an idea, not a solution, to the problem of spam but then again encryption is something that the governments of the world don't want people to start using.
I'll take the current Internet and push for more secure methods within the OS to protect me.
I don't get this, since she can't do her job by randomizing tests, quizzes, etc then she wants to destroy the vary knowledge she spent all semester to impart on you. I would call the cops or at least ask the dean to investigate.
I do know that last semester my Calculus teacher stated to ask before taping his lectures, something to do with copyrighted material - not so much his lectures but the material covered in the textbook is copyrighted. Which I still don't get? Well, that's not true I do get it I just don't want to.
I hope Obama is going to really look at the Patent System, and Copyrights. Honestly, though I don't think so it's going to take another 20 years to rid ourselves of this mentality but, I fear, after that this type of thinking makes someone money they will be the one to oppose any change.
Is there a better example of this old story. The reaction was one of an old economy not understanding the realities of the new economy. One based not on the scarcities of a product but on the service. Give the product away sell the service.
She doesn't understand that that could be a more viable way to make money. Her student should be commended and HeliOS's Ken Starks should send that kid and school more free LiveCDs.
So they increase the speeds and let's say the US government does offer free wireless access to the Internet. Considering that, once again, they missed the boat and have already complained that the Internet will fail if they don't start capping bandwidth.
So then will they ask for a bailout too?
Probably.
Well, I held an IT position for a couple of years but I had a better job - same company - as an Analyst that required my technical expertise that wasn't in IT.
But after moving with my partner across the company I had to give up the job. Trying to find a position that was in IT was hard but I decided I'd rather teach CS rather than trying to find another rat race job.
Best thing I ever did. Now, I'm 40, in school, and loving everything about it. So, consider going back and getting that degree it might be the better option.
If a book is out of print and the publisher isn't going to ever publish it my feeling is that it is perfectly ethical to use the pirated eText that is found on the Internet. Legal? More than likely it is not.
Is that right? More than likely it is not. You would think that in copyright law that if a publisher chooses to no longer publish a book than shouldn't that book fall into the Public Domain, assuming of course that the original author is dead, or has given up their copyright or copylefted it.
I'm a 40 year old GenXer - who is currently a college student.
I just saw the documentary "The Atom Smashers" - what was sad was how bush was cutting the program so much that America is no longer the place for Heavy Physics.
Now, Obama wants to cut funding to NASA. How many things were discovered and/or created that is a part of our everyday lives? Look at the Internet: it went from a military research project to billions of dollars of revenue being generated by it. And then all the companies that make their dollar off of computers and the Internet.
If the Government hadn't invested in these projects what would the world look like. I know that Obama has to rescue the economy but shouldn't he be looking at how he can cut programs that are truly stupid, Farm Bill anyone?
My British Lit professor was always pushing us to use Wikipedia as a source for papers and content. After reviewing the list of contributors to the areas that he wanted us to read I found that he was a regular contributor.
The point he knew the entries that he was taking us too had correct information because he made sure of. I think what the article is saying is the same thing. Rather than knock it down academics, or at least their grad students, should be making an effort to update the entries regarding Theoretical Computer Science so that the information is viewed as hear say.
I'm 40 and have started college. I have to say that regardless of what the studies show I able to remember and process information better now than 10 years ago when I wasn't doing anything. One thing is known is that as you learn you build new neurons.
Now, that's great and I'm happy to have new neurons but I still need help. I great note taking device is great. I used to use a Hipster PDA but I graduated to an all digital life style and use Evernote. It has a web interface, desktop application, & a mobile version. I can clip web pages or fire up the desktop app and make notes. And what's really great it syncs up to all three interfaces.
For tasks I use the web app Remember The Milk. It also has a mobile version that stays synced with the web version.
Biggest thing to help me remember things watching less TV and getting more exercise. Passively watching TV doesn't help your brain.
I work for a major bank and I can say that bill payment system from your bank is probably the best. Why? Because you set the rules as to when you pay a bill. Just one rule you should always remember, do not schedule a bill if you don't have the money at the time. Once it is scheduled it can take between 1-5 days for your vendor it receive it. Good thing? Not really if you don't have the money and check is processed, because your vendor doesn't accept electronic payments, then it can cause NSFs. If it is electronic then it'll come out the day you want it to. But if there is no money the bill payment company might still pay it causing NSFs again. So if you don't have the money don't schedule the payment.
Make sure you have the correct account # on everything. Electronic payments can have problems on the vendors side not knowing where to credit. Your name is not transmitted most of the time or captured by the receiving bank.
Once you have scheduled a payment, the bank has a limited amount of time to stop or cancel a payment. If you decide you don't want the payment to go through and you missed that window you can't call the bank to stop it.
Don't give out your Visa/Mastercard DEBIT card to anyone that you don't want to assume the risk. The good thing is that Visa/Mastercard has a good way of disputing suspected fraud charges on your account. You have to go through the bank and complete the paperwork the bank will give provisional credit. If the dispute is valid then you keep the credit. If the bank discover you authorized or your didn't complete all the paperwork with the bank, you will lose the credit. Visa/Mastercard have a 60 day policy regarding disputes. You have to dispute the charge within that time frame and it has to be valid else you lose your credit and no one can help you.
Other than a check (which has the info) never give out your routing # nor checking account # to anyone over the Internet. If they can't process debit/credit card transactions there might be a problem. Giving these two pieces of info out to anyone can constitute that you authorized the transaction.
When I moved to Charlotte, NC last year, I had no real job, nor any money to spend on books. I found that the library was the cheapest way of reading books rather then sitting around, watching television, and becoming fat. Now I have a job, I'm going to school, and still go to the library to find books to read. It's perfect for doing research, and I can take the books home. Before last year I hadn't been in a public library for about twenty-five years. Now, whether for school, work, or myself, I'm always at the library looking for something to read.
Well, considering this is my second house and I'm a bit older than you think because the reality is I was brought up to always read anything before you sign it. Don't care who it's from if you can't take the time to read then maybe you shouldn't be buying it, or agreeing to it period.
Per Google Reader Group they are only sharing the information that you asked them to share. And only with those that you have used Google Talk. I share things in Google Reader because I want other people to know what I'm reading, and what I find interesting. No where is there any private data, unless you count the profile that you create, which you can limit the amount of data that you place on that.
Google isn't sharing any private user data. If you don't want to share anything then don't click the share icon.
...do not sign ANYTHING without reading it first. I work in a call center for a bank, and I don't know how many times I tell people that they signed a particular agreement binding us and them to something. And that they should have read it prior to signing but people really don't take the time, usually five minutes, to read anything.
If you don't want to do it then take the consequences, and shut up. I like when people tell me you can't possibly read everything. Here's a story:
When I was buying my house I was scheduled to meet with the lawyer for the closing at 3:00pm. They made me wait till 5:30pm which I was okay with because it seemed they were busy. When it came time I looked, and read, every single piece of paperwork, and found that my monthly payment had an extra $300 tacked to it. I looked at the paralegal, who just wanted to be done and go home, and told her to call the bank because I didn't agree to that in my original paperwork that I was given. She was not happy because it appears it was her mistake. It took an hour for her to correct but if I hadn't read it the consequences would have meant that I had a mortgage I couldn't afford. BTW: she wanted to be done by 6:00pm that night. It was 8:00pm when we were done. She blamed me but it was her fault for scheduling so much to do, at then not doing it.
Read everything that you sign because you will agree to things that you didn't realize if you don't.
Thanks for the update!! Though I though CompUSA was closing down, and selling off? Nevermind doesn't really matter. So I do take it that Bill Gates is at least the richest person in the United States? Just not the world or Americas anymore?
In other words, lots of those who "get connected" like this do so willingly, and with a certain sense of self-importance.
I have to agree, everyone at my job complains about being available, I work in a call center, and I just do it. So I get compensated for things that they don't, but it's my decision. I don't have to bring work home, but I do work on things that would improve my job, and so I present them, and get implement them. Am I working too hard? Not really because I'm also in school, and if I have a paper then I work just on that, and nothing for my job.
That is because he missed the boat with Open Source. Just like he did when he didn't take the Internet into account. He's business man who wants to make money, great he's the richest guy around, but like all business men he doesn't really understand anything outside of the business. Collaboration was considered the first sin of business because no one, IE business (wo)men. couldn't figure out how to make money at it. Then Wikipedia (yuck!), YouTube, Linux Software Vendors, Apache, etc. come along, and they are making money. Now, collaboration becomes their mantra.
Of course you know something is up when the richest man in this country goes from it's communist, to it's important for business' to collaborate.
Unlike wikipedia. I can't use wikipedia because of the collaborative system that doesn't allow experts in their fields to fact check the accuracy of the information.
I need something that has been vetted, or at least was written by someone in the field that knows more than, "I read this book at band camp so I'm an expert now." If that were true because I read the "Elegant Universe" by Brian Greene then that should make me a physicist, and all my misunderstandings of the universe are facts.
Hopefully, that is Google's goal is to be a repository of information that can be useful. Otherwise don't bother.
Does that mean that I can get a Mickey Mouse iPod? This can serve Apple very well but since I don't think that Pixar and Apple had a huge relationship, other than Steve Jobs, this might not help nor hurt Apple. Though, I would find it strange if SJ didn't capitalize on this with Apple.
Learning to program. How many programmers got the programming bug from playing on their Apple ]['s or Apple ][e's? Why was it really great about it? Well, after getting my computer when I was 14 I spent a few hours that Saturday morning reading the documentation and by that evening was creating lo-res graphics. By about the middle of the night hi-res graphics. It used to be really easy to sit down and learn to program.
The only problem I find with Objective-C is that I can't imagine a 14 year old getting his first computer and just writing graphic programs off the cuff. Maybe the age of the kid should be younger but other than playing on the web what is there to teach kids how to program anymore if not just for the machine.

That is the real question. So how long before the UK is a Totalitarian State?
