There are those of you who will argue that it's not a botnet, however it looks like a botnet to me. 425 000 odd machines running that little blue frog app.
Xing Corp made the mistake of not encrypting the player keys for their Windows-based DVD player, allowing the entire world to use their keys to decrypt DVDs.
It saw Microsoft's bloated slothful SBS replaced in it's thousands by swift lean *nix and bsd boxen, which are easy to administer, and easy to update.
Not one of our clients are going to "upgrade" to another Microsoft server platform. Not one. After years of exploits, lock in, and "useless feature which leads to a format", even the most dedicated Microsoft fans are jaded.
It saw USB support on all major distro's, plaug in a camera, and be greeted by an import photo wizard.
Plug in an external drive, and start filling it up. Plug in almost anything USB and just start using it. Thanks kernal gurus, you just made the garden variety user want to use Linux.
Happy new year to Apache, QMail, Sendmail, Bind, DJBDNS, Xorg, Firefox, and Bram Cohen.
This is an amazing app under windows (so far fingers crossed), in fact, Google Talk is the only reason I have a windows box running at this site. Skype wishes it was google talk.
This is naive thinking IMO. Microsoft makes over 30% of it's profits from Windows and over 30% from MS-Office. They got that MS-Office monopoly by using the Windows monopoly. Why on earth would Bill and Steve allow a competitor to Windows gain any value by putting MS Office on Linux?
Because my friend, if they are not in the game at all, it's slam no trumps for linux and open office.
The delineation on Linux or BSD, between root (administrator) and ~/ (user) is profound.
On anything MS, it's grey and you can allow (read let the world in) by something as trivial as setting a user account able to read the default www dir.
Thus opening the gamut of IE vulnerabilites.
Try that on a system designed to allow proper delineated access.
For Christs (purposefully capped) sake, the (M$) marketing guru's will mandate user access to anything and everything in Longhorn (or whatever the marketroids deign to call this abomination), so that (Shit won't break).
Mark my words, (excessive french sweet sounding drool) We have seen you before, and we will see your successor!
I wish/hope that engineering will eventually override M$(S) marketroidness, but history has proven me, and every othe administrator wrong.
This guy does not host his own site, he does not care to take responsability for his actions, he uses cheap mass hosting.
The simple truth is that he trusts a third party with his data who cannot be reason of scale, look after him.
When he actually owns the equipment, rents the T1, and pays the upkeep on his gear, and buys his own IP range, he will have some control over over port 25, and maybe the rest of the world will give him the attention he deserves.
Until then, he will get the attention he deserves.
Everyone who cannot live without email from Paul please raise your hand.
I wasn't very clear in that comment, what I am saying is that Microsoft should recall all CD media unsold each month when they release patches, and RELEASE ALL PATCHES ON THE MEDIA THEY SELL TO THE PUBLIC.
Are you claiming the zero's and ones are yours, and yours alone?
Are you patenting the group of zero's and one which make up a 32 bit word?
So what if the word(s) you hold a patent on, by chance, is/are included in the output of a paint program writing an image?
Are you claiming that writers of the imaging software should pay you a royalty because they contain that series of zero's and ones, or maybe paint programs should be rewritten so as never to *infringe* on your patent?
Are you claiming that the instructions in the C, or C++ language are somehow yours and yours alone if grouped in a particular way?
Are you saying that you, and you alone should have control over the way assembly language is written?
Should schools and universities pay you royalties so that they can teach fundamental mathmatics?
Get over yourself, and get over the idea of patenting the language which describes yourself, and the entire universe.
Mathmatics should not be patentable.
Imagine having to teach a child to count under software patents where the concept of 3 is patented. Extrapolate.
In a pure Outlook versus Anything Else contest it would be possible to eventually give a richer client experience than the Microsoft product, it would take a long time, because Outlook is remarkably mature, but it would be possible.
The linux user model and directory struture is superior to Microsofts.
Information a user wants published is located in the users ~/hmtl directory.
This information is then published by the servers publication daemons, er "services".
I.E. ftp, www, finger, etc.
Further, the server is able to easily distribute slash diseminate the users information within a user defineable trusted pathway.
This model works on a scale of millions of users and millions of servers, with plenty of scope for refinement.
Tell me one more time why I should let one universally untrusted content viewer deal with this, given the diversity of open source servers which must universally agree with each other and *practise* security under intense scrutiny.
One reason?.
How the hell did a troll post like this get a +5?
Moderators, how the hell could a browser cause a network connection to fail? Mod parent -1 troll.

Are you sure you want to fsk with them?
Tried to follow the link in the story, but the server put me on hold....

omfg i knew the cylons ran linux.....

All the best for the next year!!
Exactly, notice the voice box is only checked for Google talk. None of the other apps support voice.
for Linux real soon :)

Perhaps this is MS's last chance?....
Angered? Nah. Unimpressed for the last time... (at last.)
Since when did you need a Microsoft product to fill in a web form?
Don't be such an ass, there is absolutely no reason for a site to require Microsoft Windows at all.
More likely the developer has some bug up his arse about using axtivex controls and has thus rendered the site useless as far as open protocols go.
This type of development needs to be kept to the private sector and not be used in government site at all.
Rest in peace Jack, and thanks.

It installs mult-user on Linux just fine.
for exactly one version of mslinux.
Don't worry about being blocked at home, the rest of the world cares not about the fact that MCI carry 1/3 of U.S. traffic.
We block anyway.

Sue me for stating the obvious.
AU$300 for an out of date version of Windows XP pro.
This is from a company whos distribution costs are at most $5 per unit.
If the auto industry did what Microsoft does, I.E. knowingly release faulty cars, they would be sued and regulated out of business.
Why should Microsoft be allowed to sell software on CD media which is known to be faulty, and then expect the end user to fix it?
