Now this is a great post! It really is too bad that we in corporate america see fit to paying the big laptop distributors our hard earned cash when they do not provide real service and attempt to hide the parts so you buy new again.
Filesharing has changed, though I view it more as the following, as opposed to the RIAA's witchhunt:
- spyware built by corporations and individuals not associated with the RIAA
- horrible networks that can't hold a candle to the original napster incarnation.
- less techno savvy folks sitting on T3 connections (due to a |slight| decline in available IT jobs in the "new millenium") willing to share their collections.
I like BitTorrent, however I see it as a tool to share Open Source works rather than to exploit the RIAA's latest and greatest FadWare.
You are most likely not evil, you just look like it because you like to get the job done, period.
I have worked in several different companies in the IT field from small to very large. One trend that I have noticed is that a knowledgable "technical" manager is a rarity. Some may argue that this is not true, I apologize to those managers that are 'actually' hands on at least a little with their admins. I have been lucky and have had a couple of these rare species, to learn from
From what I have seen, most managers are hired for the position because they have a degree, not a technical degree mind you but a degree (usually management).
This is appropriate in the managerial sense, however I still feel that to be an appropriate 'technology' manager you can not base your technical experience on your "Intro to Microcomputers" (ASU - consisted of 8 weeks of introductory Java and 8 weeks of Autocad...WTF), or "Using Excel/Powerpoint" classes alone.
I would be more inclined to have an highly (or moderately so) technical manager who merely has a BS in computer science (minor in business). Shows that his interest lies in the technical domain and supporting his employees in the proper ways (ie...training, mentoring, etc.), rather than someone with an MBA "climbing the ladder" to the next butt-kiss.
And how is this surprising at all? We sit here and talk about how advanced we are getting. How advanced our society becomes because of our endeavors.
We all know it is only a matter of time before libraries are only accessible via the internet. So why not make enough money to buy "new" and up to date books.
When was the last time you "frequented" a library, I have not since I was in high school. Then again I knew about the "digital world" long before the 1995.;-)
You know I find the flaming of ones OS preference just stupid no matter which camp you are in. I don't care what OS you use, I don't care what OS 'you say you use'. We all use what is either required of us, or what we choose to use for the particular need.
With that said, I would NEVER use an MS based OS for the following. Anything that might cause someone to die, get hurt, or lose america's finance records.
The power being controlled could kill, as older folks and infants can not regulate body temperature as well as us young adults can. Hospital systems that are used to do heart surgery or brain surgery, would not be candidates for a 'blue screen of death'.
Unix/Linux/BSD are more reliable, and have been proven. Best example that comes to mind The Internet
Stop attacking each other for OS preference, who cares.
The question is whether the latest-and-greatest from HP, Sun, and Oracle is really worth latest-and-greatest prices.
Heck no, not with the price you can get AMD64 systems and acquire an Linux ISO for! You would be just silly to stick yourself for extra expenditure just to have the "brand name of choice" of the computer industry.
There is no reason for an SysAdmin to ever do this to an employee. Also a SysAdmin would NOT do this even if he disliked the employee enough to do this.
We have enough bad karma with users, don't make it worse with ignorant statements like this.
For those that would dispute this go to a still functioning NT4.0 box and open up a cmd window and type "ls". Hmmm must be a Microsoft proprietary command eh.
There have been a few articles that I have attempted to contribute over the years, which have not made it to post.
However if you want to complain about comments being modded down or up, blame lazy users with moderator power. I for one have been to blame as well.
Just recently I have started looking at 1 thru -1 posts and modding them up accordingly if they are interesting or informative.
I think slashdot is still pretty cool, it isn't the/. of 1998 but it is still cool. I do not subscribe, as I am still extremely under paid for my skill sets. I can barely afford to clothe my children and keep my house.
I do however appreciate/. for what it is, a distraction from my now mundane life and sometimes very informative site.
So how soon after we start stripping the moon of resources are we going to experience the tidal waves. How about the hurricanes and other phenomena that the moon has been theorized as possibly affecting???
The candidates hosting company may be running such and such, NOT the candidate! If you can point me to a candidate that set his/her site up on their own and did NOT use frontpage or office for it....I might vote for them.
If you can point me to a candidate that actually runs his/her website off of a homebrew box running linux or a bsd that he/she built themselves, I WILL vote for them.
Most likely they chose whatever they chose because it was the cheaper option offered by their "web host".
That being said what point would this have in choosing a candidate. They most likely have no clue anyhow.
How much 'actual' good data will this contain? Sounds more like a money funnel to me.
They are smart collegians mind you, however the wild spawns the actual entity they are trying to catch. Distributed honeypot net would be more effective in my opinion.
The sign says "keep off the grass" not smoke it! Geez.....what is this guy on!?!?!
Resign or termination the only 2 ways to go with this guy. Can't say I would want his advice regarding my college education nor would I want his advisement for career choices. I hope he doesn't actually "advise" students.
Oh and from what I can tell from my own experience us young androids (or whatever he termed us), do not fault the older models. We learn from them.....just so you know.
I doubt it, if anything it will increase business, companies will be "forced" to adapt to continue to work in a cheap "slave" labor environment. This is a brilliant forward thinking step to take. I think that they will be proven correct in the step that they have taken. Vietnam may make a name for themselves and change their appearance to the ignorant. My.02 anyhow.
Now the RIAA will go after cable providers. This is another huge move in the right direction! NOT.
Moving things around is not going to hinder the massively funded music and movie industries. If anything this will close the noose that much tighter around our technology creativity and what is viewed as fair use.

But we gotta dell dude!
This just in all searching will be done with microsoft's knowledgebase search engine. Where are you going today!?

Too bad it isn't possible any longer. Any talk about a 'reform' would label you a traitor and have you thrown in prison.
IMHO
First, First-Post....ever!
Go City of Austin go.....It is nice to see that cities are starting to think intelligently! The more cities adopting open source the better!

Church!? Wha??? I thought all the BSD folks were labeled heathens and heritics, walking the strut of the daemon!

hmm that's wierd, I have typed it many a time....and gotten a directory listing.....though it was ugly...it listed the directory.
Did you use "command" or "cmd"?
WindowsXP built on 2000/NT/Unix technology!

Abstraction layer in the most simple terms is the interface between the Operating System and a computers hardware.

Not sure how this was off-topic....but ok. Interesting how when someone defends slashdot they are modded down. That seems anti-slashdot to me.
We can celebrate that the virus writers are only talented enough to write code (VB, VBA) that crashes e-mail servers and web servers.
They do not seem to have the skill or determination to ruin physical equipment like a hard drive I had that a BBS download ruined in 1988.
I guess the abstraction layer actually hinders physical hardware abuse nowawadays eh!?
