  1. Strange New War? on Toyota to Employ Advanced Robots · · Score: 2, Interesting

Does anyone get the feeling that China may be the cause of a new, strange war? Not shooting, but economic, robotic, worker-ethic, or something even stranger?

We already hear complaints that everything is "Made in China" (or Taiwan, but we shall ignore for this discussion). Ok, shoes, T-shirts, etc.,... but now cars?!?

Can China's cheap labor outdo even "Western Civilization's" tech by just throwing enough bodies at it? Toyota is scared that their non-smart bots are non-competitive against China's workforce? What next, Oracle is competing against a billion data enterers? (OK, a bit jokey).\

It just seems that a lot of stuff points back to China as a problem for many countries. [Put on tin foil hat now]

I am just wondering if there will be in the near future (or whatever future in the US's case; and yes I am American) some kind of trade war, social war (China being bad on human rights), maybe terroristic war by who knows who, or just straight out weirdness because China is becoming so powerfull by utilizing a labor method outgrown by pretty much every other world power a long time ago (ie, something akin to slavery- I know this is a powerful and loaded term, and correct, but I could not think of another suitable term that would describe some of the conditions that China lives under.

    Sorry for rambling so much.

I just wrote a 5 paragraph reply to you post, but I had to redo it because of, well, misunderstandings in your post. Such as "printed.. on my PC" and "Didn't print correctly on Windows/Mac". At first glance I thought you were a complete idiot.

When you got to the part about printing address labels, I was about to shut down the window when I got to the part about printing "on my PC", and "Didn't print correctly on Windows/Mac", until I figured out you meant "Office/Mac" (and if you really meant "Windows/Mac", just delete your account).

I don't know about the AnandTech article, because such usage tests usually depend on the individual, and I don't know his background.

Sorry to jump to conclusions. I would also like have Project and Visio on the Mac.

    Have a good one!

Just wondering, how important is it that the "Address Book" doesn't display some LDAP information that most people will not use. How important is it to use LDAP? Is it really _hugely_ important to use _completion_ from a server?

These are real questions, because I've never used LDAP, nor as far as I can quickly think of come across it. From your post I assume that you DO use LDAP, and probably extensively, so I will not begrudge you your views, for they may be totally valid in your usage. But I think you may be a bit biased by calling these shortcoming "half-assed" since your comparison of Apple and Microsoft is completely based on the implementation of LDAP. I've been trying to think of something similar, but I really can't because your choice of comparison is really trivial in comparison of the topic "open source".

As for the "completion" thing- I can't really comment on this without getting abusive, because this is just damn silly. Really, you can't type an extra few characters?

(Disclaimer- I had an Apple II+, then a PC, then a Mac from '97-'01, then a PC till now.)

Well first, that is just a stupid statement. "Must be easier to integrate a browser in to the OS than just create a stand-alone program". Sure. And it wasn't until Win98 that IE got tied into the OS. Remember during the anti-monopoly tials MS said they couldn't disentangle IE, then someone came up with a program called Win98Lite (or something like that) that stripped IE out of 98?

Don't know if this is still true, but PSU's IT department was fairly good when I went there (compared to stories on /. about other schools). At the old computer store (I believe now rolled into the main bookstore) they had equal numbers of PC and Mac models, which by itself shows that they at least allow for differing computer types. A guy I knew, as a senior project, had to make an OS based on this "Linux" thingy, which in '97 I never even heard of.

Well, not really. The NFL has salary caps which limits every team's total payroll, so you don't have a situation like the MLB where the Yankees outspend every other team by $90 million or so. Another thing, look at how the Eagles are doing, and they are a couple of million under the cap; now compare that to the Redskins, who have been consistently over the cap for about 4 years.

But you know that this remake will just be sad, disappointing, and make you feel like your testecles were soundly wrenched. First, Raimi not directing?!?! Second, they can't make a sequel? Third, is Bruce going to act in it, or just produce? 4th, is Ted going to act in it in 300 lb rubber outfits, or just produce? 5th, no way in hell could they accurately remake Dead without cleaning it up so much that it looks like "Leave it to Beaver".

I can not describe how much I fear this will blow. This will blow like Moby Dick (no pun intended) on crack with a sneeze. You know what I'm imaging in my head right now- "Wing Commander" crossed with "I know what you did last summer". I'm seeing Deadites crawling out of TV sets and saying "Groovy- I see dead people" while looking in a mirror. I see a CGI dog.

Maybe I'll be wrong, maybe it will be good. Maybe it will be a cinematic tour-de-force of epic proportions. Maybe I'll win the lottery (and I don't even play it).
