  1. Re:Now, let's all have a big Slashdot group hug on Kerry Concedes Election To Bush · · Score: 1

Thanks for making the case for the electoral college. I used to think it was antiquated, until I really considered getting rid of it. The EC ensures that we elect a president with broad support across the country, not just alot of support in a few areas.

Take this election, for instance. Bush has a majority of the votes, the first time that's happened since 1988. But even that wouldn't help him if he lost in Ohio. Bush had to appeal to people in the Midwest, not just the South and West. Likewise, Kerry lost because he DIDN'T represent the desires of the overwhelming majority of Southerners and Westerners.

Kerry could have won easily if he had moderated his extreme views on abortion, stem-cell research, and taxes. He didn't, and that's why the Dems lost the South and West, and really didn't do well in the Midwest either.

This vote also validates the decision of the EC to award the 2000 election to Bush, by the way. Bush had broad support among a variety of Americans then, but didn't have the turnout to give a majority of voters. The EC reflected his true nationwide support then, just like the EC *and* the popular vote did this year.

You said "So let's recap: War good. Fags bad. Huge deficit good. Personal choice in medical care (abortion) bad."

Let me rephrase that, from my perspective as a Bush voter and right-wing nut job.

"Defending our country, good. Immorality, bad. Tax cuts for middle class during recession, good. Killing babies, bad."

You may not like it, and probably no one will read my comment since this is so late, but this is what I and the majority of Americans believe.

Now if you can present some logical arguments against my positions, I'll listen. Two of my close workmates are liberal Democrats, and one is practically a Socialist. I've listened to them, considered their views, and changed my opinion on a few things. I'll concede that invading Iraq may not have been the best option in the war on terror, but you'll not convince me that immorality, tax hikes, and murder are good for the country.

At least I haven't had my Rocketmail account upgraded. My Yahoo accounts show the 100MB limit, but Rocketmail is still stuck at 6MB, which is irritating itself since the mailbox size limit *used* to be 10MB until Yahoo knocked it down for some reason.

The word in Greek is "epi" (as in epidermis). It is found 896 times in the New Testament, and is translated "on" 196 times, "in" 120 times, "upon" 159 times, and other variations the rest.

Although it is interesting that the translators chose the word "in", it doesn't mean they expected the mark to be within the hand. The intended meaning was probably more like the phrase "holding a cup in my hand."

If the author meant "within the hand", he should have used the Greek word "eso" or "en".

I know this is an old story and thread, but I wanted to comment anyway. :) I saw OEone a few weeks ago, and wanted to try it out, but I use Mandrake 8.2 and didn't feel up to installing Redhat just to see OEone.

Now that they've released it for Mandrake, I have to say that this is pretty much exactly what I expected. It's not something I'd use, but I highly recommend it for the computer newbie. Not necessarily the linux newbie, because a little Windows experience will go a long way in a KDE or Gnome environment.

The look and feel are unique, everything is point and click and works like you would expect it to, and it has a nice common theme, so it feels like you are running a single application, not playing with windows in a cluttered desktop.

Overall, I'm impressed. I think this would be great for grandparents, etc, and it's just fun to try something different.

Having worked as a customer service rep for Philips for 3 months, I know exactly how horrible their service is. They don't take their own calls, a company called Sitel does the dirty work for them ;) I think the main reason it sucked so bad was the stifling atmosphere at the call center. The only resources we had were the manuals that came with the products, and we didn't have most of those! The pay was only $6.50 an hour, with a max of 30 hours a week. Nearly every call was monitored, so we were hammered from upset customers and quality control. I'd teach high school before I'd do that again...
