  1. So why even release it this way? on Original Star Wars on DVD... Sorta · · Score: 0

IIRC, all three star wars films were remastered to hell and back in the "THX remastered version" in theatres. This was the version released a year to year and a half before the special edition. When they released the LaserDiscs they had AC-3 tracks (don't know if they did 5.1, might have been 2.0 with Pro Logic Encoding). I distinctly remember making the comment, "It looks like they filmed it yesterday" when I came out of the film at the theatre.

If the new DVDs are from that master, how hard is it to crop the bars out a bit for 16x9 and turn the anamorphic boolean on in the .IFO. OK, so if the master was actual laserdisc resolution, (or stored as the actual FM composite video signal for some reason) how hard is it to spend a couple of thousand and do a routine transfer of ANY print from the release mentioned above? Also, if it was 5.1, give me 5.1.

Non-Anamorphic is not excuseable for a 2006 release. Remember that ALL dvds were supposed to be Anamorphic from the beginning. Is was just cheaper to master a 4:3 frame with letterboxing and run the very same render to DVD and VHS, and nobody really policed anything.

I would imagine that to real Star Wars fans, ANYTHING from Lucasfilm is bittersweet. I sympathize, as Trek has long since jumped it's own shark, did their own non-anamorphic DVDs, etc. Non-anamorphic will not piss you off until you go out and buy an HDTV (or even an EDTV). A nice anamorphic DVD with a decent bitrate will look pretty damn good with an upconverting player on an HDTV.

Here in america, people are dumb. That's why there are still Full Frame or 4:3 pan and scan DVDs (a version made for all new films by popular demand!). I wouldn't really care but when there is a "Guaranteed to be there" thing at the rental store, you don't get the credit unless they are ALL out.

  12. Paradigm Shift on Jobs Resists Music Industry Pressure · · Score: 2, Insightful

There needs to be a shift in paradigm. The simple fact of the matter is that older people have paid time and time again for the same music. They bought it on LP, Cassette, CD, DTS Disc, DVD Audio etc.

Sure, something fundamentally needs to change with the record companies and their formulaic approach to building bands, instead of finding real talent out there, but that is a different argument.

The fact of the matter is, I should be able to rip my CDs, and purchase music online for whatever price, then I am on record as purchaseing/owning the right to listen to those songs. If 5 years from now songs that I have purchased already have been re-mastered from studio recordings and are now available in lossless, DTS 5-channel, MPEG-2 10 channel, whatever... I SHOULD BE ABLE TO FREELY DOWNLOAD THE NEW VERSIONS as they represent a more accurate representation of the recording I purchased the rights to hear. The money I paid was for the recording the artist laid down in the studio. If there is a new means of transmission that more faithfully reproduces the listening experience of that recording, great, give it to me. If not, when I purchase that song, give me the reel-to-reel, or DAT tape, or whatever.

How come no one has ever brought this up?

My concern is, what this does for the adoption of bluetooth for non-technically minded people. People don't look into the standard, they don't care about or understand profiles. They hear about this bluetooth thing and:

They want one to go with their new acura after seeing the commercial for the TL, they go out and pay a large amount for the new phone mid-contract, and oh.......phonebook transfers don't work.....no OBEX

They got their new mac and they would like to use the sync with their phone......nope...sorry...

They just picked up the motorola phone tools and they read that they would no longer have to connect a cord up to their phone.......nope sorry

They just got the new e815, and they wanted to do Dial up networking via bluetooth on their Powerbook so they could enjoy EVDO.......sorry

I could give a shit about ringtones and the like, but these are real features that bluetooth is there for, to make things easier. Why don't they just make a filter for the filetypes that could be used as ringtones, and leave the bluetooth profiles?!?!

Why? Apearantly Verizon thinks that the only thing bluetooth should be for is wireless headsets. Crippling has caused issues with handsfree devices, mainly that the phone have had to settle for a earlier version of the protocol stack than the latest due to needing time to cripple the stack. Oh, and update the firmware later yes...NO, cause they take away even more...

Consumers don't like this crap and theres a lot of it going around lately....

HDMI - Cool, but why only one jack, I need a switchbox as soon as I bring the TV home?

CableCard - Sorry but Cox communications doesn't have that, and by the way, looks like we won't be getting around to activating the DVI port on the back of our external box.

Local Digitals - Sorry consumers, put up an antenna, cause we're too pussy to move to MPEG-4, and ditch the analogs.

    HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray - Nuff said..

Anamorphic vs. 4:3 frame letterbox - that confuses many, many people

A Universal Codec Plug-in Standard - whatever you want to play, in any device. Load the "Universal Binary" Divx, FLAC, OGG etc. codec in anything that supports the UCPS. Doesn't that just make since?

Stop playing the so-called "pop" music that they want to shove down your throats before the projector starts up. (Leave it something neutral like classical music).
