Hey... When I was 15, I worked 3-4 nights a week and split tips with all the Waiters. I had no bills but for insurance and had a pile of paychecks sitting on my night stand wating to be put in the bank. I walked out of work with like 50-150 dollars a night. 40 or 50 bucks yea right. If I wanted anything I bought it in short order.
Gentoo is GOOD. I am posting this from KDE 3.0 on my Gentoo workstation, Gentoo is FAST. You need to knock off a few corners here and there to get things nice, but every thing I need has work almost flawlessly. It only takes about 1 day to setup on a 1GH+ system. But once you are done you will never have to fdisk and start over.
I was going to mod this topic, but hey I need to say this. I know what you mean. For example, there was/is a Feeling of jerky ness in say Win9X that is not in NT, the whole OS felt smoother more stable. Now linux has always had a smooth Unix Like feeling as well. But I use to have a AMD 1G TB in this system and I thought it was smooth. Then when I got my RMA XP1600 chip back and put it in. IT got even more smooth. Now the 1G TB was fast, but a reckless feeling of fast. THE XP is fast and smooth. So I can relate to what you are saying, But It might just be your hardware.
Let just say this friend of mine... he goes this his local library checks CD's out and rips em with Lame with insane settings. While not a perfect copy its so close that you can't pick the CD from the rip 100% of the time on a med to high end HT system. I hear most of the stuff he checks out are CD's of old LP's that he licensed at some point back in the 80's. Maybe he lost the LP but he did buy the license so he should have the right to still use the music. That is my take on things. Not the my friend need to rationalize anything.
The Format is already pooched, the FCC has not the BALLS to force cable MONS to must carry HDTV. What do you think they will do with the SPEC. Surly not the right thing. And if the cable MONS have their way we will all watch DTV crap that is worse that ANALOG but more of it. NOW THIS, if the MP assclowns get their way, we will never see any HDTV in our life times.
What do you thinks of the NUON DVD players? I have a N501, I bought it as a DVD player not a game platform. It also has VLM. There is a SDK for it here dev site They say Linux SDK soon.
I was trying to say that the Linux NVdrives do not do SMP. Only the NT and 2k, You can check the output when you start Q3. r_smp try to do smp on the VIDEO as well.
Yes the swith in Quake is seta r_smp "1" and it does help. But you still get the biggest boost in NT or 2K. The also have smp video drivers. The Linux NVIDIA drivers do not do SMP.
I know first hand. I always in the past bought SMP from a PPRO 180 to a OC CEL 300A. I just built 2 AMD 1GHZ pluse systems. There is a noticable speed increse in the systems, but you must take into account that I put 7200 rpm drives in the new boxen. The speed from 1GH to 1.4xp is not that big, but it does show in bulid time and Quake render speed. Its kinda strange really the 1GH TBird is fast but like a sloppy fast and the XP1600+ is a smooth fast. This is in X of course, in a Shell you cant tell really.
I have seen all the talk. My systems runs fine. I have 2 of the boards and the only problems I have had is the bad XP cpu. I should have know when I check the HS and noticed that the GA was warped just a little bit.
I might just wait for a awhile. I am posting this on a new K7s5a with a 1GHZ AMD, MDK8.1 and this things is smoking already. I dono how much faster I could get!
If you look at the costs on the last page, they take the MOST pricy AMD MB. So you are left with a 140 diff. What a bunch of crap, you can pick up a good SIS735 board for like 60 bucks. So you have a really big rift in the price, pluse the fact that RDRAM is still more then cas2 2400 DRR.
Tom is slanted, I will let you figure out to what side.
Were that true! It will come bundled on new computers like it or not. Right now you might be able to get 2K or ME on a box, but what about after MSFT pulls the OEM deals? I bulid my own computers so NP here. I think you are asking alot from consumers. They don't have any options or choices, that is why they need help. Asking them to use Linux is one thing, but to build a PC to avoid the MSFT tax it too much. They only way to hurt MS is not to pay the MSFT tax. they could care less if you fdisk the box after you paid for it and if counts as a sale for marketing. I have a feeling that this will not be the case after the subscription base deals kick in. let us hope.
Maybe we want to rip em to VCD's! For backup only of course.
yea I had a whole office of Vectras at one time. Good systems.

You should be able to do it with QSYSOPR.

I thought Stampede merged with MDK.

you mean like this
# Display
DISPLAY=`who am i -u | awk '{ print $8 }'`:0.0
export DISPLAY
What does SUN know about anything. Java ?
I was looking into this for a project at a former job. I looked like it cost alot of $ tho and I never got a chance to see it in action.

I think MSFT uses OS/400 for all their important stuff like sales and manufacturing.

I was about to say the same exact thing.

It is not just the cpu, Think about the I/O in the HP9000. Now that's FAST
