  1. Re:Everybody gets a piece? on AOL Sues Five Spam Companies · · Score: 1

Please don't get me wrong, I fully agree that this is a good thing. I only look at it in a different light. If AOL wins, that will be a fantastic development in the fight against spam.

Before I started working where I work now, I worked for a few different regional (smaller) ISP's helping them get off the ground technically and know full well how spam effects their bottom line. My viewpoint is that the ISP (AOL in this case) has built their systems to componsate for the current level of spam. If this level would be cut in half, then their costs for handling spam would feasably be halved. I'm hoping for the same solution as you presented being that the price differene will (should) be reflected in service fees being lowered. That would be an ideal, but I quite honestly don't see that happening.

I guess that I'm a tiny bit skeptical about the whole thing. The only outcome that I see is that if AOL wins, their bottom line will be rosier and their stock holders will be happier. I can see this as setting percedence in the future and hope that it in fact does. At the very least, it's a step in the right direction...

Don't get me wrong, I think AOL has the power to do something about spam, but the only thing that I see happeneing from all this (if they do in fact win) is boosting their bottom line as spammers will just go off-shore and charge more for their services.

The snow drifts are so high on some of the roads around here that the snow plows have had to double-cut the banks on the side of the road and clear the road signs because the banks are higher then them.

Being one of two network admins (it's a large network) part of my responsability is to make sure that no one ABUSES the priviledge of being able to surf the web. Don't get me wrong, company policy states the usuall "no personal business at work", but it's very loosly enforced. Recently I have been having to more closely monitor the traffic becuse there were a few individuals that were spending most of their time visiting porn sites - some of them nurses. The thing is, everyone jumps to accuse corporate policy about monitoring, but the problem really lies in the few employees that abuse the privilage.

I took a few pieces of smooth PVC pipe, use 1 as the barrel, a larger one as a "tank" and connect them togeather with a 12v outdoor sprinkler actuator. Fill the tank with air using a bicycle pump, wrap a dozen or so paintballs in tissue and put them in the barrel. When I trip the actuator, a dozen paintballs go flying. Accuracy isn't great, but I get at least 100 feet most of the time. It's used mostly as intimidation and a last-resort against a bunch of people or a bunker. It's taken me nearly 15 years of building and selling cars to get to a point to buy my dream car (The Judge) and started off by building a '76 Volare 318 back when I was 19. With those cars you need SKILL, not a computer interface. Yes ladies and gentlemen, some things are better without a computer interface!

Nothing, I repeat NOTHING mass produced now will sound or look as good as detroit steel - especially from that era (mid/late 60's through early 70's - before the oil crisis). 12. How about this... on Mandated Regulation/Certification for Computer Repair? · · Score: 1

No, I don't think MORE government regulation is needed, especially on yet another aspect of my life. Instead, how about employer accountability of their employees? The employer is the one who suposidly check their employees references to make sure they knew what the hell they were doing. Insofar as a self-employeed person goes, I think the BEST "credential" there is would be references from either past employment or clients. Put 'em up in a frame if it makes you feel good.

However, I think just the opposite of what you're asking. I really believe that it's the END USER that needs some sort of "license" or whatever to use a computer. At least some sort of intro to computers class where they get a fancy certificate to brag about to other AOL users. If that happened, it would eliminate the unbelievably stupid questions and problems that seem to popup all the time.

Perfect example... Many moons ago (about 10 years) I worked at a small mom & pop computer store selling computers. One day we had a HUGE storm that caused power havoc all around the region (and other problems) leaving people without power for weeks and causing major surges in other places. I got a call a few days after the storm at work from a customer complaining that his new computer system didn't turn on. I figured that there was a thrown breaker or something on the power strip and asked him to check it while I was on the phone. He said he had to find a flashlight because it was dark in the room and I got a little suspicious and asked if he just had a desk light he could use. He told me he did, but it didn't work because the power was out all over where he lived. True story.

I've seen plugins for SetiAtHome progress, NOAA weather information and a lot of other things too. Never tried them, but they are there, just gotta look for them. They are fully supported within Linux (given the right driver software), but last I knew the HD44780's had problems with Windows 2k not allowing direct LPT port access. It may be cleared up with XP, but have never tried it. If you want one and use Windows, the easiest way to do it would be with a serial interface.

If you want an LCD, you can get them for much less than $100. A friend of mine got a 2x20 or 16 serial with mounting hardware and cables for $60 and I got HD44780 4x40's for 20 bucks - both backlit. Go to http://www.eio.com for inexpensive HD44780's...

Well, I installed 2x20 LCD's on a the severs at work to monitor traffic, temperature and CPU usage. There's no real reason to go with a VFD unless it's going to be used in an extreme enviornments. For example, LCD's will freeze in the winter (well, here in New York State) and become useless while VFD's are more immune. Besides that, you can get LPT LCD's for around 10% of what a comparable VFD will cost.
