  1. How did this virus spread so easily? on SCO Offline · · Score: 4, Interesting

What I don't get is how this virus spread so far, considering how hard it must to be get infected by it. You'd have to go out of your way to get infected since the spreads its self as zip compressed attachment.

I can understand how past viri have spread so quickly taking advantages of exploits in Outlook and Windows RPC etc, but this doesn't seem to use any exploits what so ever.

Is it just a lot of stupid users or I am missing something?

  2. Re:Needless amounts of effort! on Nit-Pickers Guide to Deviations in Jackson's LotR · · Score: 1

Not that anyone cares, but there is only two things that really bothered me in ROTK 1) Sauron's Eye seeing Sam and Frodo then looking away. The instant that Sauron saw Frodo and the ring the game would be over. Having the eye glance Frodo and then look away undermined the impact of the scene where Sauron turns his eye towards Mt Doom realises that he has been tricked. 2) No confrontation between Gandalf and The Witch King at the gate of Minas Tirith, I was really looking forward to this but it didn't happen.

  3. How they run the homebrew code on Gamecube Linux Port Announced, In Progress · · Score: 5, Informative

For anyone like myself wondering how they run the homebrew code on something that doesn't employ a standard CD format the FAQ has some - ableit brief - answers.

    ### Can I just burn a 8 cm CD/DVD and use it in the GameCube? ###

No. The GameCube reads no CDs/DVDs. There is no way to produce a GameCube compatible optical media using a CD/DVD burner.

    ### So do I run homebrew code on the GameCube? ###

The PSOload method is the only way.

    ### What do I need in order to run homebrew code? ###

A GameCube, any version of "Phantasy Star Online", a "Broadband Adapter", a memory card, and PSOload.

    ### Do I need a modchip? ###

    There are no modchips.

All sounds kind of cumbersome IMHO.

  4. LOTR Hype on Wired's LOTR III Tech Breakdown · · Score: 0, Interesting

Ya know, now that the Matrix hype vanished into nowhere, I'm glad the LotR hype is gearing up. I think this one will earn it.

I hate to rain on your parade but if anything the indications of the Return Of The King have been disappointing. Firstly there is no sign of the Rangers of the North in the trailer even though there is a scene that obviously shows them entering the pass of the dead. Secondly it has been announced they have cut out the scenes with Sauruman, which is certainly going to make things interesting in terms of the seeing stones (I think they are called plantirs).

  5. Rangers from the north cut out? on LOTR:Return Of The King Trailer · · Score: 2, Interesting

** SPOILER WARNING FOR THAT THOSE HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS **

Is it just me or does it look like the movie won't have the rangers of the north? I am making this assumption because the part of the preview (on the Two Towers DVD) that obviously shows them about to enter the Path Of The Dead has Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas but no rangers (or the two elves that come with the rangers).

It will a real bummer if there are no rangers in the film, because not only did they sound like bad ass warriors in the book but they also give Aragorn something very important, which relates to Aragorn and Arwen love story which the movie makes such a big deal about.

  6. Pynchon reference? on Nullsoft's Waste: Encrypted, Distributed, Mesh Net · · Score: -1, Redundant

I wonder if the name WASTE is a reference to the subversive, underground mail-delivery system W.A.S.T.E. ("We Await Silent Tristero's Empire") that appears in the Thomas Pynchon novel 'The Crying Of Lot 49'.

  7. Re:Mixed Reviews... on Master of Orion 3 Released · · Score: 1

Well according to Metacritic the game is getting mixed reviews, some as low as 50 others as high as 92, averaging out at 75 at this stage.

  8. Not too surprising or difficult on Instant Concert CDs? · · Score: 1

I don't find this too surprising, nor difficult for the radio stations to do in terms of equipment. I know here in Australia radio stations often do live broadcasts of concerts, so technically speaking it would be no extra effort for them to record those concerts to CD. The intrastructure and equipment is already there to pull it off, the difficult part is getting the record labels / and or artists to agree.

  9. Re:Lucas-Mart on George Lucas Consolidates his Empire · · Score: 2, Interesting

...it was Lucas who insisted on the introduction of the god-awful Ewoks [as opposed to Kasdan who wanted to have Kashyyk, the homeworld of the wookies - Lucas dind't think they were "cute" enough, given our experience with Chewbacca].

I thought they introduced the Ewoks because it was more feasible to find a lot of kids to put in Ewok suits than to find 7 feet people suitable for Wookie outfits.

  10. Re:Download it... on Ancanar Teaser Trailer Available · · Score: 2

I know Quicktime 6 includes a plugin for Mozilla, but then you didn't say which operating system you are using.

  11. Spoilers on In-Depth Look At Matrix Previews · · Score: 2

You're not kidding about the spoilers, it almost gives away the entire end climax for "The Matrix Reloaded". I only skimmed the article but it seems like a quite informative read given that I knew very little about parts 2 and 3 prior. It is also interesting to note the following:-

Silver is promising a climactic battle like we've never seen before: a 17-minute sequence that alone cost about two thirds of the budget of the first "Matrix." (That film, in case you're wondering, cost $65 million.)

Given the recent discussions about the climatic battle in The Towers, and the Clone Wars in Episode which I found impressive, it seems to be the selling point of these movies and is making bigger and badder battles.

  12. Dreamweaver, Microsoft, standards on Microsoft To Acquire Macromedia? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I hate to think what Microsoft acquiring Macromedia would mean for webstandards. Dreamweaver by Macromedia is certainly one of the most popular WYSIWYG HTML editors around, and because of that there has been groups such as the WaSP have been work with Macromedia making sure it is complies with the web standards out there. Who knows what Microsoft would do with Dreamweaver seeing that is in direct competition with Frontpage.

  13. Features in the alpha / beta versions on Doom Archive Reopened · · Score: 4, Interesting

Does anyone know if the beta and alpha versions had any features that were cut out of the final version of Doom? I noticed two such features just reading the documentation.

The most interesting thing about this version is the different BFG -- it causes many fireballs to come out in many directions. See screenshots.

Fireballs ricochet off of floors and ceilings.

  14. A Winamp 3 skin that includes one of your songs on Online Marketing for an Indie Band? · · Score: 2

An interesting way to promote yourself online, which I recently witnessed at this url is make your own slick Winamp 3 skin and include one of your tracks and a link to your website if you click on one of the buttons. I am not sure what results it would deliver but it is certainly one of the more interesting ways of promoting a band.

  15. 3D or 2D? on LucasArts announces Sam & Max sequel · · Score: 4, Insightful

Does anyone know if this going to be 3D or 2D? I am guessing the former because the Full Throttle sequel is 3D from what I have seen thus far. If my guess is correct it will be interesting to see how Sam & Max translates to the 3D world because it was very 2D animated game with some weird geometry and architecture in some areas. I remember Max had a secret 3D cameo in Jedi Knight and that looked kind of weird. Fingers crossed they get the same voice actors and composer too, which if you have never heard you can hear in this remix

  16. Interesting AOL related quote on OEone HomeBase Desktop · · Score: 2

Considering the recent story on AOL and Mozilla/Netscape/Gecko I thought some of you would find this quote interesting. Personally I would like to see them pull off something like this.

Eid is also talking to AOL. Imagine a PC with a desktop based on a Mozilla or Netscape browser, one with an AOL logo on it, that is as tightly integrated with the AOL service as Microsoft would like all PCs to be with its own .NET, MSN, and Passport services.

  18. Re:Web Developers will stick with IE on AOL Releases Client for Mac OS X with Gecko Browser · · Score: 2

If you develop using standards and good coding, you can develop for Mozilla AND IE and it will look the same! Stop using FrontPage and Dreamweaver et al, and there aren't any problems. Use XHTML/CSS and you can make great pages that look 99% the same in Mozilla and IE. :)

I agree most definitely, a perfect example of this is www.alistapart.com which works on every browser under the sun.

  19. IE better on the mac on AOL Releases Client for Mac OS X with Gecko Browser · · Score: 2

Just to be the devils advocate, I have been reading up on lots of browser stuff for the redesign of my site and from what I have learnt it appears that Internet Explorer is better on the Mac than it is on the PC. This is mainly because IE on the Mac is far more standards compliant with better CSS2 support and full support for PNG transparency.

As far as IE on the PC goes version 6 aint so bad because it is step closer to better CSS2 support, though it is still a far cry from Mozilla's CSS and PNG support.

  20. Re:pop-ups on AOL Releases Client for Mac OS X with Gecko Browser · · Score: 2

Does this mean AOLers can finally get rid of those stupid pop-up adds that AOL spews out at startup?

I doubt it, as I understand it the popup killing code is part of Netscape/Mozilla not Gecko the rendering engine.

  21. Re:Unlike Lucas, at least they aren't being decept on Lord of The Rings DVD, Now or Later? · · Score: 2

Let us all consider what George Lucas would do in this situation. Release a VHS tape, and claim that there won't be a DVD for 5 years. A few months later, a DVD will come out... surprise! Too bad if you already bought the VHS.

And Lucas Film has announced they will be releasing AOTC both on DVD in VHS in November, so what's your point?

Granted the TPM DVD was released many months after the VHS and the original trilogy still isn't available on DVD but in my opinion that's more about spending the time to put out a quality product than trying to rip off the consumer.

  22. Audio commentary on Lord of The Rings DVD, Now or Later? · · Score: 2

I was little disappointed to discover the two disc set out now didn't have an audio commentary. However at least the four disc version will have the commentary.

There also will be six hours of behind-the-scenes features in the DVD package and four commentary tracks by Jackson and cast and crew members.

By the sounds of it the commentary will be like one on the Phantom Menace, which had crew members explaining everything from CGI to sound effects and I must say is one of the best commentarys I have heard thus far. Coming back to the two disc I found most of the extras throw aways, especially considering most of them reused interviews with cast crew to the point you got a bad case of deja vue.

  23. This reminds me of my university on Attack Of The Dreamcasts · · Score: 2

This reminds me of my university where people connect their laptops to the network when they aren't supposed to do so. It isn't to tricky either, you just need to find a desktop someone isn't using, find out it's IP, unplug it, set your machine to it's IP address and connect it up. Now I imagine this would present quite similiar security problems to a rogue Dreamcast or iPaq connected to the network.

Perhaps the only way to overcome this problems is give IP addresses to trusted MAC addresses only. In the context of a university this could mean the student could apply for an IP address, but could you trust the student? That's the real question

  24. Watermarked cover scans? on Dungeons and Dragons Knowledge Compendium · · Score: 3, Interesting

Taken from the Credits & Legal section of the site

Our scans are watermarked, and have been since the site's inception (albeit for a completely different reason); modifications to the image will not remove this watermark, and distribution or public posting of a watermarked image, without permission from The Acaeum, is prohibited.

Is this actually possbile? I noticed the images are stored in JPG format so wouldn't the watermark perhaps be lost in the compression scheme?

BTW Can you even copyright the scan of artwork/cover of which you don't even own the copyright?

  25. Eye Candy on nVidia NV3x Sneak Peek · · Score: 3, Interesting

The eye candy is pretty damn amazing, especially that rendering taken from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within movie. Just a couple of questions though, are those sort of graphics available in existing cards but game developers aren't fully taking advantage of the shaders? If this card intended for consumers/gamers?
