  1. Oubliette on Firefox 2.0 Password Manager Bug Exposes Passwords · · Score: 1

There are options but you do have to know where to look and most people don't. One program I use at both home and work is Oubliette (Windows only I'm afraid).

It's very ease to use and has encryption so I can can carry all my passwords on a USB stick and know even if I lose it no one can get my passwords (unless they hack the master password).

I am currently porting a classic PHP site to CakePHP and I must say the framework makes life a lot easier. It takes some getting use to MVC design practices (eg a view doesn't request data, it is given data) and some of the documentation is a bit unclear but once you get into the swing of things it's a rapid way to develop sites.

It's certainly easier to setup a printer server in Windows rather than Samba but the former is weak as a print server.

I recently completed a training course in administering a Windows 2003 server and was shocked at the lack of granular control for printers. Things you can do easily in Unix such as print quotas just aren't possible in Windows.

So in short Windows is easy to setup but if you want granular control you're much better off with Samba.

  8. Outlook - there is no alternative on Windows on Outlook, Evolution and Kontact Side-by-Side · · Score: 1

Having spent the last couple of months researching and implementing a groupware solution, by way of Toltec Connector for Outlook, I've come to conclusion that right now there is no alternative to Outlook - at least on the Windows platform.

Sure Thunderbird is great, I use it both at home and work, but it has no calendaring support aside from a plugin and Sunbird but they are not mature yet.

Outlook 2002 is terrible because of the 2GB PST file limit is the bane of my existence but Outlook 2003 is a major improvement, both visually and behind the scenes.

Contrary to popular opinion using Outlook doesn't have to equate to buying an Exchange server. There are plenty of commercial plugins like Toltec Connector, Bynari etc that let you use an open source server for the groupware component. Right now I am heading my bets on version 2 of Kolab, which hopefully will let different clients share calendar data.

Second the whole calendar thing has been kind of done to death already. Outlook does a pretty decent job on the PC and iCal does an amazing job on the mac.

If Google did produce a web based calendar service, it would augment the capabilites of iCal on the Mac not replace it. As far as I am aware iCal lets you upload your calendars to the web, and view them online but I don't think you can change them online. If Google Calendar existed then you could update your calendar using just a web browser, and then keep it up to date on your desktop using an iCal remote subscription.

The whole iCal file format is very cool, and no where used to its full potential. Sunbird uses it too.

  11. Even cheaper than the second prices on Think Secret Predicts Sub-$500 Headless Mac · · Score: 1

Having recently looked into the prices of second hand Apple computers, I can tell you this product sounds like a great buy because it's cheaper than a second hand machine of similiar spec ie G4 1.25Ghz.

Now the article states the machine retails for $500 USD, which equates to approximately $645 AUD (Australian Dollars). Now from experience you're very lucky to get G4 that is 1GHz or faster for under a $1000 AUD - and that includes second hand on Ebay - so this a great buy.

On the other hand, it doesn't sound very upgradable, so if you're tech savy and want to experience the Mac but expand the machine over time you're probably better off spending the extra money and getting a second hand G4 PowerMac - after all there is CPU upgrade kits available.
