  1. Re:Not necessarily the war yet on Strike on Iraq · · Score: 2, Insightful

but once action starts, the time for protest has passed.

It absolutely has not passed. Dissent is not disloyalty. and supporting troops has nothing to do with supporting war. Supporting troops means that when they come home, they don't come home to people calling them baby-killers and crap like that.

If going to war means that once action starts that all voice of dissent must cease, then who will take up the call to stop war when its time? You want to hand bush a blank check to continue making war on iraqi-style regimes wherever they may be? How about we go to Colombia and take up this war on terrorism against the drug cartels and FARC? Or any of two dozen african countries ruled by dictators who hold power through thuggery and murder?

no, now more than ever, the time for protest has not passed.

I will say this in defense of the IT people there... its gotta be pretty fucking hard to lock down a system that has almost 70,000 users (between students, faculty, staff, alumni, etc).

of your other two options, as much as it galls me to do so, if you're stuck with the requirement of no installation, i have to recommend the activex approach. we've found performance of this approach to be quite good, though you have to watch out for the occasional com bug.

with http you can get security if you need it (https/authentication) and deal with only a single port which is almost guaranteed to be open not only on your end but at the client's end as well.

they charge you based on your liklihood of costing them a payout for an accident. This is in part determined by your record. however, your assertion that a 17yo wrecking a car is an aberration is far from both truth and rationality. A cursory google check revealed this: "according to the National Safety Council, from 1991 through 1996, 16-year-old drivers had an average of 37 police-reported crashes per 100 drivers. This is more than 20 times the national average for all other drivers combined. " this link shows the risks of a traffic accident by age.

The trouble is that microsofts projections are always WAY off--take MCSE's for instance. Has anyone ever seen less than five MCSEs handle the workload of a single experienced unix admin? I'm not talking about your typical non-saturated workload--i mean environments where the amount of work to be done is greater than the resources available to do it. That's the only way to really make a comparison.
