    I love linux and have been using it for 8+ years. That being said I'll never run linux on my desktop again (well never's a long time, so change that to the forseeable future). I have a G4 Tower w/22" Cinema Display and it runs Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat (full), ... flawlessly. And I can connect to all my linux servers via ssh/sftp/scp when necessary.

    Linux is an excellent server platform but until Linux is as intuitive and slick as OS X, I will buy $3000 laptops running OS X.

    Productivity relates to how much work you get done on each system. Linux requires a significant amount of work to be a decent desktop machine. OS X requires a default install to be the best desktop machine. If Apple does a better job of getting all their server admin tools gui based for OS X server (and Oracle gets out of RC2) I'll be purchasing a XServe to compare to my Linux and Solaris setups.

    Oh and saying "I like and use OS X, but it's not competition for Linux. It's a good OS, and has it's places, but it's no threat to Linux or MS." is completely off base. There are actually more people switching from Unix (like myself) based OSes to OS X than Windows users.

    kids will be playing Neverwinter Nights instead of Pen and Paper D&D. I still have my D&D boxed setx from 1979 (Basic and Expert) and all my AD&D books, modules, etc. My kids will never know the thrill of having to read a 80 page book in 3rd Grade 3-4 times to get the rules down so you and your friends can play an imaginary game.

    Now they just pop in a CD/DVD and click away. Killing the imagination and creative processes at an early age.

    Because Advanced Server 2.1 is selling very well. Everyone has a choice to make as to what they do. If you desperately want to get into the game industry, what better way than to demonstrate your ability by building a game for free.

    As I recall the developers of CS (counter strike) have made out quite well and as a owner of Half Life I've never paid a dime for CS.

    Just because you would prefer money doesn't exist doesn't mean everyone feels they are being exploited by the system (consumerism as you put it).

    If you want to believe the world would be a better place if money didn't exist and everyone worked on only the projects they want to work on, there would be no sanitation workers, no one at taco bell, no one delivering mail, ...

    Socialism only works in SciFi. As much as I wish the opposite were true, socialism is a joke. The only way people work is if there is a tangible reward on the other side (99.99% that is).

    your clients are doing. In most states you have to keep track of nontaxed purchases and pay a use-tax at the end of the year. If you are not you are illegally avoiding taxes and will likely never be caught (which is why the "no-tax" internet is a myth).

    The thing that pisses me off is if an internet retailer charges me a "tax" they are not a government entity and if they are not paying my use-tax legally I'm still liable, thus have been lied to and essentially charged an extra fee instead of a tax. BTW who the fuck do these companies pay this tax to? the fed? doubtful. Sounds like a way for them to drum up more cash and less work.

    I love when people slam something as common that very few people were using at the time. At least they were honest in their silly (in retrospect) assumption they could complete the OS in 18 months.

    MS didn't become the 800lb Gorilla by being stupid. They use every advantage possible. I'm not a MS fan by any stretch but I sure wish I'd put that $2000 i had in 1991 into msft.

    Isn't that the whole point of a "search" engine. BTW my site is cobianchi.com and all that comes up in google for cobianchi is italian sites (one that links to my college webpage from 1996). That sound's more like a piece of shit than a search engine to me.

    Guess it's time to create my own search engine.

    Just save a set amount every month and when you reach your goal buy what you want. That way you're not tied to the "latest and greatest" you will achieve your own goals.

    Continue to save even after you've purchased your new computer (for the next cycle). I did this in college, my first computer a Pentium 133 was $2483 and I saved for a year and a half to get it. The funny thing is when I began saving the fastest you could get was a Pentium 90 and they were around $3500. As I saved prices drop and technology improves. I know this is common sense but saving for what you want is better than wasting 19.8% on a credit card or MBNA "loan". Plus setup a company for your outside work and write off your expenses. I make about 60k/year in contracts (in addition to my full time job) so I write off everything work related. If you're learning and don't have contracts you can still expense your stuff. If your tax bracket is 12% (fed) it's like getting 12% of what you buy for free. It saves me 30%+ on taxes annually.

    Hell I do most my work from my old Pentium 133MMX Fujitsu Laptop w/D-Link 802.11b (22mbps is noticably faster than 11mbps from my Airport Card) from my bedroom. Textpad, SCP are all I need. Although the apps I'm working on (from my laptop) are all web based so I guess it depends on your platform.

    I cannot understand how anyone who is good at what they do cannot afford the equipment that makes them better at their job. Sounds like a brick mason trying to get a builder to use him for his house but saying he needs to borrow the tools. It just doesn't fit.

    Besides if you're really doing 3D rendering, coding, etc... for a living it's a perfect time to take a break while you're compiling/rendering your code/scene.

    Still waiting on 17" Powerbook which was announced 3-4 weeks ago and has a 5-7 week ship time as of today.

    I love apple but don't compare them to a "We only announce when we can sell it" company.

    If they start from scratch I would bet they could create a viable product. No system is immune, however UNIX has 25+ years of testing while Windows releases are so frequent there is little time for hardening.

    That being said it would (I agree with you) require a significant shift in the marketing driven approach of MS. Betting on either is a waste of time however since it will never happen. On the off chance it does MS would have to change their approach so I think it would work.

    I fix a lot of systems (windows based) and the difference is you can actually run software without being root in UNIX. I would bet over 1/2 the software out there won't run on Windows unless you have admin rights. A girls computer I had to repair (for the 3rd fscking time) has this POS Cattery software (Delphi, give me a break) and it cannot connect to it's JDataStore since her user doesn't have admin rights. So I'm screwed, I have to give her rights for that and about 6 other programs that won't run. I cannot believe the piss poor planning (any planning MS?) that went into Windows.

    MS Linux like OS X would be good. Windows isn't that bad of a UI it's just a piss poor backend that causes problems.

    Unless they helped the Korean program the thing. I unfortunately have to use MS products (my company pay's me to) and it's a constant waste of time applying the daily hotfix, backing up, testing, implementing, ...

    Why doesn't MS just give up with their POS OS and go to a Unix core like OS X. MS Linux with a .Net front end would be secure, fast, OSS Core, and finally kill 99% of the reason the internet sucks.

    Oh well, guess I'm dreamin.

    All I use is secure FTP. Seems fine to me and no DUNS number necessary.

    As far as ease of use:
    1) Get a better computer
    2) Get Fugu
    3) Get a clue. End-Users aren't that difficult, you just need to be able to communicate.

    Servers out there. Simply create UDP packets and sent them to 10000 servers and they will all respond to the place you want to DoS. Games are no safer than any other piece of Internet connected piece of software.

    This should definately get more attention now and in the future. The innocence of the internet is long dead (long live the king [of porn]).
