    Maybe the clean install fixed it.

    I have a G3-333 w/192MB and it runs 10.1 and 10.2 painfully slow, but OS 8, 8.6 and 9.2 are lightning fast.

    Maybe you need a clean 9.2 install (or to patch it). When I bought my G4 Tower (733) 10.1 was really slow compared to OS 9. In fact I liked 9 better than 10.1 until 10.2 was released.

    It will take an extra minute to boot up but all your OS 9 apps will run immediately.

    When talking about OS X 10.1 was slow on my G4 Tower 733, 10.2 is lightning fast (another reason it should have been a free upgrade to 10.1 users).

    However all that really matters any more is how does the computer meet your needs for a system.

    Personally I wish Apple would release a Handheld and Tablet style Mac. This would make me switch my software completely to Mac. I'm not fond of trying to sell an Apple based solution using Windows for the Tablet/Handheld part. Seems like I'm contradicting myself when I'm saying Apple is better.

    However when I charge 1/10th the fee for supporting an Apple as compared to a PC, people tend to notice.

    I'm looking forward to some of the new extensions. However as a ancient system maybe it's time for a new alternative to XWindows? Any suggestions as to current projects?

    In reality using OS X killed Linux on the Desktop for me. I don't care if Linux/XWindows is free, OSS and customizable to my heart's content. I want a UI that works, and that is what OS X does. I was shocked at the increase in speed from 10.1 to 10.2 on my G4 Tower (AGP so the GL extensions work).

    Until there is a free alternative that comes close to the Apple UI, I'll pay thousands extra to have Apple hardware to run the Apple OS.

    oh well I guess no one will believe that either. The sad thing is I didn't know it because we barely studied the 60's/70's in any of my history classes throughout high school and college. I guess since the teachers/professors felt since they knew it we knew it, there was no reason to teach about Vietnam, Moon Landings, Presidential Scandal's, Terrorist Hijackings/Acts (yes they happened in the past too).

    Oh well I guess learning is really up to the student more than the teacher.

    They are 5000 to 8000 depending on the config. The new ones didn't have prices yet so the $8000 is for the 2GB system.

    Actually prices aren't that bad when comparing to average Sun prices.

    and the ability to run your applications without rebuilding.

    Plus if your trying to sell something that runs on Solaris wouldn't it be good to demo it on solaris? For example, if the customer cannot come to you.

    Also as far as server fail-over you could use one of these temporarily to host a webserver, db, hell anything you want. If the battery works like most laptops it would last at least 1 hour with a heavy load and 2+ with a moderate load. Try that with a UPS for around $8000 (SPARCs are damn expensive).

    The "real world" is all about politics.

    I have had some below average teachers as well. However, simply quiting school because you don't agree with something is a pathetic excuse. What happens when your boss who wants you to develop some piece of software has a different understanding of how it should be implemented than you? You quit?

    College also shows you can complete something, in spite of the fact it may be irrelevant to what you need to do a particular job. For example, Non-Western Civ (History) classes I took in college don't help me at all in performing statistical analysis of data for custom built reports. However, it did give me some interesting insights in to the Mongolian Empire and the rise of Communisim in China and the history between Japan and China. There are great lessons to be learned from history, and a well-rounded education can give you that.

    Maybe you should have chose a better school? I know MIT students don't seem to complain about their professors being stupid.

    College is to give you a foundation of understanding so no matter where the technology goes you will have the ability to learn it due to your broad base.

    If you want tech training go to DeVry/University of Phoenix (what a crock name). This is why a degree is worth more than certifications.

    Plus, no one is stopping you from learning about RTOSes. I'm going through the Minix Computer OS Design book by Tanenbaum right now. You can either be spoon fed like most university students, or you can get up off your ass, show some motivation and learn it on your own. This is why I never have a problem finding a job and others cant get an interview. People want to hire motivated workers not someone who'll just tow the line.

    A CRAY supercomputer in 1980 has the equivilent processing power of a 500MHz processor. By the time IBM gets people to switch to this "pay for cycles" method computers will surpass it's ability in the cost/performance arena.

    It's not always how fast you go, it's how efficiently you get there. I could fly on the shuttle from Kennedy Space Center to Edwards Space Center (assuming NASA would lighten up the travel for free restrictions on italians in oklahoma! lol) but as fast as the shuttle goes I could drive there faster (although not nearly as stylish).

    Irrational exuberance related to earnings projections based on nonuniform purchasing patterns leading up to the Y2K hype machine caused the economic downturn.

    To simplify:
    Every idiot believed what they read instead of researching and determining for themselves the reason(s) the economy was on such an insane upward turn (history is a great indicator).

    This is why in addition to my MIS degree I doubled in Finance. No point in having money if you don't know what the hell to do with it. I was expecting this since 1998 (and as a result was questioning the hell out of my forcasting until the summer of 2001!). You can still make money in the stock market, you just need to buy companies instead of stocks (see Warren Buffet methodology).

    I'm not a drug advocate but light doses of speed would work (or ephedrine as a substitute). Be careful however b/c high blood pressure can cause stroke or heart attack.

    In the end it's not worth it to procrastinate on projects or go crazy trying to get them done quickly. The sooner (see my name for intended pun) you learn to schedule/plan your projects the better you will become as a future employee and developer.

    Why?

    If you've chosen PocketPC over Palm why would you switch? Kind of like going from Windows to DOS.

    Plus the UI components will not work at all. So simply copy/pasting your code to CodeWarrior from the Embedded Tools would work (assuming you tried to keep it close to compatible, again why?).

    The hardest thing for me as a developer is the logic, not the code. Hell with good design documents and a well thought out plan the code is almost secondary.

    I've seen a calender tool too but i'm not sure where it is. If you get QMail, Horde, IMP and Courier (IMAP for Horde/IMP) running you should have no problem finding the calender stuff.

    I highly suggest buying QMail Handbook it saved my sanity.

    There are enough good teams from Florida!

    UCF is an excellent school. I'm really impressed everytime I hear something about the students/teachers it's good. That being said OU has the highest percentage of Merit Scholor's (sp? since I'm not one!) of a Public University in the country! Although with $15k/year scholorship cash and costs at only 3k/semester for classes & books, I wish I were, then my student loans would be nonexistant!

    Someone being kidnapped from Africa, shoved in a boat and held in horrible conditions to cross the Atlantic is not the same as an indentured servant.

    Granted I thought of that too when posting but the people that were indentured servants (this still exists today btw, I know of people from vietnam that went through the same thing). Indentured servants are trying to escape a bad situation in the hope of something better for themselves or at least their children. A slave in all likelihood was taken from a place they didn't want to leave.

    All I've been reading says XRaid will be an Apple delivered SCSI solution.

    Yes you can install a Ultra160 but running a Dell in a rack of Apple XServes kind of defeats the purpose of trying "switch" to all Apple HW/SW.

    XRaid is real raid. It will connect via a scsi cable to the XServe box. I'm missing where you say it's not real raid.

    I run IDE Software RAID on my Linux boxes and it's extremely fast. You can also run software RAID on the IDE drives in an XServe. However, eterprise apps need SCSI performance. XRaid is what will deliver that performance.

    It will make the XServes truly ready for the big time (SCSI instead of IDE).

    With the G5's from IBM, an increased bus (900MHz is what I've been reading for a 1.8GHz 64bit processor), and an easy migration path for legacy (3 years is legacy now!) apps to move from 32 to 64bit (a la SPARC), and Oracle 9i. Apple is positioning itself to be a major player. I know my company is taking notice.

    All I want from Apple is a Apple PDA (I hate Palms) and a Tablet PC (screw MS). I build Healthcare software and both these products are a necessity.
