  2. Why bother? on Run Windows Applications Natively in OS X? · · Score: 3, Insightful

The big thing about Crossover office is....Office. Apple already has office for OS X. Look at the supported apps page http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxoffice/suppo rted_apps/ 50 whole apps are supported. Many of them only work partially. You know what? Most of those already have versions for OS X that work 100%. Photoshop. itunes, Quicken, Notes, etc the list goes on. Maybe there is some special win32 only app that would really help if it was ported to OS X, but going by that list I just don't see it.

Here is the deal, codeweavers have been working their asses off to get win32 apps to run on linux. Thus far they have barely scratched the surface and can only run like .005% of Windows apps. In fact they are falling behind. How does that possibly help Apple? It doesn't.

The only thing Codeweavers brings to the table for Apple is possibly the ability to help devs port apps to OS X X86. My guess is that if most vendors are not making their apps available on OS X it sure as hell isn't due to difficulty in porting but rather has more to do with the limited ROI of making apps for OS X in the firstplace.

First of all, I just wanted to say that considering what Red Hat has done for the community for over 10 years now I think people give them way too much shit. 99% of the comments knocking Red Hat are rants by idiots who have no idea how much Red Hat does. But in this case I have to ask what the hell they were thinking?

"Incorporating as a non-profit foundation creates immense accounting challenges, and a truly independent Fedora Foundation would be forced to track the cost of bandwidth for distributing Fedora and every single hour of Red Hat developer time used to improve Fedora as well as the legal and administrative expenses associated with perpetuating the project and running the Foundation."

They are just realizing this now?

"In order to maintain non-profit status, a third of the Fedora Foundation's money would have to come directly from public sources. At present, Spevack argues, this just isn't feasible."

They are just realizing this now?

"Giving up" control of Fedora and then taking it back for the reasons listed just smacks of poor planning. Many people have argued "why should I help out Fedora why Red Hat just "takes" those changes and sells them in RHEL". I've always thought that was a retarded baseless argument. But on the other hand plenty of people seem to make that complaint. I don't think Red Hat is going to make many friends in the community by pulling Fedora even closer. I hope they are prepared to deal with the fallout and possible defection of contributors.

  18. Re:Slashdot Editors:Please add this link to the st on OpenBSD Project in Financial Danger · · Score: 2, Insightful

Keeping in mind that I believe that his work and the OpenBSD project are important, a few words of advice. As someone who works at a very large non-profit let me say this, doing a good job isn't enough. You have to work just like any other business to stary afloat. And that means constantly dedicating time to fundraise and not acting as a "one-man-show". Perhaps he needs to hand off the reigns to someone else and let them manage the project and fundraising. He apparantly and not suprisingly is unable to handle both coding and fundraising. Most people can't so that isn't a knock on him.

Anyway I wish him luck and hope he gets organized. He really needs to establish a real non-profit and get someone with real fundraising experience working for him. Without that I'm surprised it lasted this long. IMHO giving him a few donations in order to keep the project running without him deciding to make major organizational chages is just delying the inevitable. I sincerely wish him the best of luck.

They stuck to that "GNOME must be WM independant" crap all the while decrying KDE for "taking away choice" for years. We all know how well that turned out .

Anyway back to my point, there is a million other facets to the whole GNOME v KDE thing but most interesting and least thought about IMHO is that if Red Hat hadn't pushed out Gnome .002 and kept pushing Gnome all along,it would probably be about as popular as Afterstep these days. I don't know whether to thank or curse them.

  21. Here's the thing on No HD-DVD Movies Until April · · Score: 1

The VHS to DVD transition was something everyone could benefit from, and I mean EVERY household in the USA who owned a TV and rented/bought movies. That is a pretty dam big market. Going DVD got rid of rewinding, provided a massive boost in video and audio quality even on old 19" TV sets, and was something that very affordable and easy to do.

Going DVD to HDDVD/Blueray only benefits a very small group of mostly wealthy people. It doesn't solve a problem for anyone but that same very small group of people, and the problem it solves is one most people aren't even clamoring for, aka video improvements. Finally you have to have a recent expensive device to even take advantage of it. $50 DVD players will still be appealing in 5 years. $1000+ TV sets and $300+ HDDVD sets won't.

HD video is a solution to a problem that most people have zero interest in solving. You know how most gamers laugh at Quad SLI solutions because they know that for 1/4 of the price you can still do everything you want? Same thing.

Other companies have indicted that they are indeed interested in licesing Apple's DRM but Apple doesn't want to do that. If Itunes becomes the defacto distribution site for online TV and movies, which is actually very close to happening, then Apple should be forced to let other hardware makers participate.
