I think programming while not at work is the wrong use of words. When I hire someone I want someone who is genuinely interested in technology. Back in the .com days people were becoming programmers just because they heard you could make big money at it. They had no interest in anything but the money and the quality of their work showed. Nowadays it isn't much of a problem anymore.

I'm willing to bet every person you worked around at NeXT and Apple was very interested in technology and the IT industry as whole. They were probably always 'working' in their minds even if they were not sitting at a computer typing up code 24/7.

Exactly. All of Joel's articles about about good to expert developers. More than likely the people he describes could use any tool or methodology and ship correct, working software.

Actually you've touched on the running theme in all of Joel's articles. Good developers are good developers. A good developer can get away with being a duct tape programmer, because they are good. Chances are that good developer could use almost any methodology and/or tool and ship working software. While it's interesting to look at the tools and methodologies good developers use, I would rather see ways to make mediocre developers better.

In my anecdotal study ;) bowling is typically the game of choice, especially to the non-gamer girls. Sometimes though, you come across those that will jam out with you on rockband.

Just to play devils advocate, how do you know this? Apple could very well be updating the protocol with every release and since they rightly assume it only needs to work with their players it could be breaking the Pre as a side effect. If Apple were truly to support other players in iTunes again they would have to publish and maintain the API or be blamed when an update breaks the other players.

For record, I think the whole fight is stupid to begin with.

I wouldn't say AS is a roach motel of a book. The story is pretty good, and you don't have to buy into her entire philosophy to get some positive take aways from the book (don't mooch off other peoples hard work, work hard yourself, be responsible for yourself, stick to your ideals and don't sell out etc...).

That said, her dialog is lacking at times and she can get quite wordy. Some of the monologues in the book are so extremely long that I wonder if her editor actually edited anything.

I found The Fountainhead to be a much better story though and while it still had dialog issues, she did much less beating you over the head with the long monologues about her personal philosophy.
