I don't see how Napster (Roxio) is making any money on this. Apple breaks even with the iTunes Music Store, and they just use it as a vehicle for selling iPods.
...Of course, Napster is into the college student extortion program now. It's odd, everyone tries to screw college students, and our niche was being able to screw the recording industry, oh, how the tables have turned.
I've been asked for ID before from a cop for no particular reason. Being afraid of being arrested if I don't comply, I hand over my ID. Some day when I don't care about having a record, I'll say "how about YOU show ME some ID, asshole?"
It's people like you that cause huge traffic jams because you're talking on your cell phone and not paying attention to the road, then you cut off a tractor trailer who then in turn jacknifes, and runs over a bus full of nuns which catches fire, burning alive all those inside.
You're lucky that people only jam your cell phone calls, if it was up to me, I'd stab you in the face with a soldering iron.
You raise a good point. Use whatever operating system suits your needs best. You are a gamer, so you would obviously be playing on Windows. I don't game (at least not on the computer), and all I need from a PC is a C compiler, Mathematica, and LaTeX, and the ability to print. Linux suits my needs, but I use a Mac because I don't want to spend time mucking around with the operating system, I just want everything to work.
It's still a stupid patent - even though it has the chance to screw MS, like the Eolas thing. Time to take the high road and realize that just because something can be bad for MS doesn't mean it can't be bad for us, too.;)
It's just like those damn physicists - can't explain something so you make up a variable to explain it. Mathematicians, on the other hand, when we can't figure out why something is happening, but we know it is happening, just say "Aha! A solution exists!" and leave it for the reader to prove.
Seriously. If we have books like this being considered good literature: its numerology drivel. People who think this book "encapsulates mathematics" are the same people who think that the movie Pi was accurate.
I'll put it in perspective for non-math, CS people. A person reading this book and getting a "grasp on mathematics" is like a person watching the movie Hackers and thinking they are 1-3-3-7.
Pick up a book modern algebra. It will rock your world.
This attack only helps SCO. They get sympathy. What do the worm writers get?
Sir, it is obvious you have little to no understanding of the 1337 script kiddie culture. In exchange for a DDOS attack, the worm writers get something called mad pr0pz, which is a form of honor and integrity among those in the community.
This guy is starting to remind me of Baghdad Bob - the Iraqi Information Minister. Unfortunately, Darl is making a mockery of the American legal system.
Modern cryptographic algorithms are good enough - it's the protocols that need work. Security problems happen in the implementation, most of the time the algorithms are rock-solid. DES, being as old as it is, is still a pretty prominent work horse (at least in the form of 3DES). Phasing it out with Rijndael (AES) just takes alot of time and money.
As for Elliptic Curve Cryptography as mentioned in this article - it's still in its infancy - at least compared to other ciphers. This is just a stupid publicity show. But I bet I can win that $1M with an investment of under $20.
There is an old KGB proverb: "It is easier to break fingers than it is to break codes." So, using my $20 budget on a pipe cutter, fifty feet of rope, and an ice pick, I believe I can recover the key.;)
Hey this guy had it coming. Concatenating the word 'soft' to the end of your name is a clear-cut case of trademark violation. He is clearly trying to use Microsoft's name to further his own business - most likely being a poor college student - trying to scam Microsoft's legitimate customers.
I mean seriously - is it fair to post an article on Slashdot that centers around photographs? It's just taunting everyone because we all know we'll never get to see - as the server is having its shit ruined.
What are the Mac users on campus saying about this? You're paying for it in your tuition fee, but you're paying so other people can enjoy the service, while you're left in the dust.
What's the university's attitude toward Mac users, the traditional sorry, not available on Macintosh or a more politically correct Mac support coming soon or the downright cruel sucks to be you?

...where is that Pepsi cap?
torrent of hi-quality quicktime movie

In Soviet Russia.....nevermind.

If it's that important, find a land line.
...but at least I'm not bitter.

I second that. But also ask how they're dealing with my boss - he was a real asshole.

I think you're giving a little too much credit here. This is not exactly rocket science.
Oh..wait...
Don't feel guilty. In fact, you should go by the unspoken Apple mantra that those of us who use OS X are better than everyone else.
This post is more right because it was posted from OS X.

This presents a problem to those of us who have unreasonably short penises.

I hope they really screw him.

Guess its time to subscribe.

Notice this is a healty tax writeoff at the beginning of the year. Hmmmm....
It all boils down to this:
SCO:We own you.
Novell: OMG STFU nUb
I for one welcome our new Corporate America Overlords.
Sorry, couldn't help it.
Hopefully now no one will get SCOwned.
You would think that, but we just use it for warez and mp3s right now. If students had written the RFC for IPv6, it would be something like:
"D00d we need warez trading 2 organize n shit ok thx"
Linus Flees! The time of judgement is upon us. Oh, repent!
