Press releases are allowed to be copy/pasted as long as the source is cited. My website is a collection of press releases. The guy is doing work people are benefiting from; finding these stories among the tons of press releases that get out everyday is a task, if not a chore; I should know, I'm doing the same.
Furthermore, his ads are non-intrusive, and at the very end of these articles. And he even find supplementary links for you to click to. Honestly, his blog is a whole lot more interesting than anything Slashdot can come up with these days; that's why his stories get posted... often. So what if he accumulate 20$ per day of Adsense revenue, or even more? It's not like his time is worth nothing AND the cost of maintaining his website is 0$.
I said that thoughts, experiences, relationship and dreams make us more than a mass of cells. The only thing a mass of humans cells have at the 8 weeks point is a relationship with it's parents; if they both decide that they made a very bad mistake and don't want the kid, then let it be and respect their decision. You can get emotional if you want, but I have my point of view.
And if the bum beneath the bridge doesn't think, nor remember his past, nor has friends nor dreams, don't bother 'aborting' him, he'll probably suicide very soon if you don't help him.
Oh and I'm glad they let Schiavo die; althought I'd gave her an injection. Letting her die from starvation just because we don't want to 'murder' her is stupid beyond belief.
Please don't compare a mass of cells that doesn't have a past and doesn't think with innocent, thinking persons with distinct personality, thoughts, dreams, pasts, relationships with other human beings, murdered and tortured under a crazy regime for no good reason at all. You're only making a fool of yourself. Really.
For work usage, you don't really need more than 1.4Ghz. Also, remember that More Ghz = More Power requirements = less battery life. I can accept waiting 2 milliseconds more for Word to check-up my spelling if it means 2 hours more battery life.
The site has been redesigned and relaunched; the biggest change is that the OED's database of citations of SF words is now made (mostly) available via the website. The OED (a nonprofit organization) does not usually make its work available in this way, but OED has agreed to publicly open up this part of its database to acknowledge the great contribution volunteers have made to this project.
What did they intend to do with a private SF words database in the first place? It's not like they're doing anyone a favor by 'opening it to the public'... especially if its updated by volunteers...
What would ANYONE do with a SF words database anyway? I'm confused...
Does this mean that we're more secure? Or our data? Or theirs? Or something? Does it means anything at all? Do we really exist? What will I eat for supper?
Will he get sued? Proprietary format... Apple... Lawsuits...
Also, considering that "Apple never released any documents on the format", its incredible that this guy wrote a decoder. Some people are truly amazing sometimes...
From what I'm seeing, it seems to me that India WANTS to be a knowledge superpower. Following the massive outsourcing of IT to their country, they are seeking for ways to do it again in other hot fields, such as bioinformatics, drug development, etc. As the poster suggested, I think they are spreading their resources too thin. Will they succeed? Only time will tell. But from what I'm seeing on most bioinformatics related boards, most young Indians wanting to get in the field are not enough informed; most of the time, they want to study in bioinformatics without knowing anything about it, just because they've been promised jobs (it's a hot topic, you know?). Most of them don't speak English fluently too, which doesn't help us informing them.
"hi everybody, i did my b.sc. in biotechnology(with 78%) from India & presently doing PG diploma in bioinformatics, but i confuse what will better for me, shall i do m.sc.. But i want job,so please help me by sending information about biotechnology & good colleges for doing m.sc. in Biotechnology & finally give me your valuable suggestion.................Thankyou."
Tons of posts like this one on bioinformatics boards, daily. I hope this represent a minority and that most Indians are better informed. There's a difference between outsourced tech support, where what you answer to the client or whether you fix his problem doesn't really matter, and being a 'knowledge superpower'. Now don't get me wrong, I hope that they'll succeed; developing fields like bioinformatics (and R&D in general) can always use more brainpower, and I don't care where it'll come from. But R&D needs money too... and tons of it.
It's a gamble India is taking with this. No guarantee of success, but at least they're trying, investing in the future.
You sure don't have to mock around with copy protection or have the CD in your drive, but steam must be online... or you can't play:( Major flaw in my book.
Gene therapy use lentivirus-based (HIV) vectors for quite some time now; it's nothing new really; a marketing team found the 'Cure Cancer with HIV!' twist interesting I guess.
When pseudotyped with the right envelope, these virus can infect efficiently any type of cell. They can also transduce non-dividing cells, which is usefull. They lack almost every gene of HIV; they retain certain structures which allow packaging of the genome in the virus and the viral promoter, but that's about it. Viruses are packaged in special cell lines containing the viral components on plasmids most of the time, and preparations are tested for recombinants. Its the best technology out there, but its nothing new, really.
Slightly related to the post, but here's my 2 cents. Science is expensive. Very expensive. And when a scientist has the choice between getting his career ruined because of bad results / wrong hypothesis or lie in order to get a second chance, some do chose the second option. Of course, the 'lie' isn't always intentional, even conscious; some tend to alter to reality in order to see what they want to see. You can't be always right, but when you're wrong, funding (private or public) gets a lot tougher to get. It can be fatal to a scientific career... when you put your life behind an idea, you tend to want to be right. No matter what. The funding system is just bad; failure is punished too harshly.
Now back on topic, political ingerence in science is even worse. Especially when motivated by a $$ agenda. Your career versus a should-be-protected plant? Not everyone has the courage to say 'no'... I admire this group of scientist, they had the courage to stand up. Sadly, some don't, and we'll never know it.

The guy is providing a great service.
Last time I checked, .com and .net domains costed a whole 10 bucks to register.
Why all the fuss about who should administer these? Is it doing any difference if it's Big Corporation A or B?
Even when lawsuits are successfull, they just go bankrupt. Some may even be intelligent enough to hide some money for later...
As long as stupid people buy their stupid crap, theyll continue. Lawsuits or not.
Look Ma! I can make the controller vibrates! It MUST be an invention worth 100 millions dollars, right?
"Inventions", these days...

The site can't even handle being slashdotted... free video hosting, for life, for everyone?
Yeah.
Right.
Yeah, ok, cool for emergencies. But I won't be carrying one on my back anytime soon, cause I'm sure it weight a ton, literally :)
Do they come in multiple flavors, too?
I just hope that the best feature of Gmail will remain free now that they've gone public.
POP3 access, no strings attached (read, stupid Hotmail requiring Outlook). Gotta love that.

I wonder what kind of Easter Eggs can be hidden in Rock Paper Scissors game (in your sig)...
An hidden 'TNT' option that beats everything maybe?
I totally agree with you! And I don't care about the 'ist/ians/icians' "controversy" either :)

Thanks, Amazon, for showing the world why the U.S. patent system is the best. Especially for software related 'inventions' and 'innovations'.
I'm submitting this comment via the soon-to-be-patented 1-click 'submit' button. Which allows to 'submit' things, in only 1 click! Wow!

The page include a 6 digit counter at the bottom of the page. As we speak, its increasing by about 100 hits every 10 seconds... poor guy :)
