  2. Re:ntp maxpoll on Tivo Institutes 1 Year Service Contracts · · Score: 1

Check out the maxpoll option for your ntp client. It tells ntp the maximum number of seconds between polling the ntp server. Unfortunately, it runs by a power of 2, so setting a maxpoll of 12 will mean ntp only polls every hour. Setting a maxpoll of 5 will mean it will poll every 32 seconds. Useful if you have systems whose internal clocks suck (my IBM 300PL, which I have observed to actually start going backwards, instead of just being slow).

  11. Its being repacked the same as the original though on EFF Supporting Home DVD Editing · · Score: 1

I think a lot of the artists main objection is that it is being repackaged (resold) back to the original party as the same movie. If I produced a movie with all sorts of sex and guns and sex and more sex, and called it "My movie of sex guns and sex", I would want future generations to think of me whenever they heard that name. However, if they saw the CleanFlicks version of that movie (only 2 minutes long after all the parts edited out) they would assossiate that edited version with my title. Doubtful they would recommend it to any of their peers.

Now if CleanFlicks completely repackaged and renamed the movie before selling it back to consumers with a small caption at the bottom reading "adapted from original movie 'sex guns and sex' by xxx" I would be fine with that.

  12. HP also supported SUN on HP To Sell And Support Red Hat Linux · · Score: 2, Informative

In our company, HP is also aggressively trying to get us to switch our support for our SUN E class from sun to HP. We are suspicious, and asking lots of questions like when the blame game begins, but so far all their answers are sharp and quick, and their price is better than Sun's. Our management is seriously considering this switch, so a move to support linux would be seen as a good thing for companies trying to get over this "open source" support model.

Sensiva . It has a linux port (what more could you ask) but it is trainable. While the newest versions cost money, the earlier versions like 1.07 are free and have all the functionality. You can prolly find some of them roaming around the internet still.

I didn't think that gestures was all that great when they first came out. But after getting used to using them for web browsing, I wanted more for every application. Since then I've used Sensiva, and even tho I only use a few like minimize and new, I find that I am now handicapped when I use machines that don't have mouse gestures. Its so slow and cumbersome. Don't get me wrong, the keyboard is great for a lot of things, but I still find myself using the mouse, and a lot of the gestures can be done without moving my hands back and forth.

  18. Re:IM in companies: a bad idea on Gaim For Windows · · Score: 1

We just started using IM with our helpdesk folk. And I must say..it is one of the best things ever. Because when people are typing out a message, they actually have to think how to explain their situation, instead of saying "its broke". This usually leads to more descriptive problems and its much easier to fix.

IM is also good for multitasking. If I want to ask my co-worker a question, but have a million other things I can be doing, instead of dropping everything, picking up the phone, looking up his number (big companies its impossible to remember everybody's number) calling him, patiently waiting for him to pick up, going through the formalities of saying "hello, this is {...}", explaining the problem, and in the end having him say "Why don't you send me an email". Good grief, with IM I can immediately see if he's there, ask him a direct and simple question, and pretty soon an answer comes back.
