Surprisingly, only the messages that were sent to Gmail at the same time managed to be delivered to his Hotmail inbox.

If you send a message to a Hotmail user only (no other recipients), don't expect to find it. If you want it to be delivered, CC the message to at least one other account with another mail provider, and voila -- it's magic.

Maybe the competition with Gmail is keeping Hotmail honest.

Folks in Seattle would laugh at the thought of a solar farm. . .

I live in Seattle, and I wouldn't laugh at the thought of a solar farm. It's about as sunny as San Francisco -- overcast a lot, but not all the time. But just over the mountains is one of the sunniest places in the country. Eastern Washington and Oregon would be great for solar farms.

The Columbia Basin would be similar to inland parts of the Southwest that get fewer than 8 inches of rain per year, and 320+ sunny days per year.

But since electricity costs in the Northwest are lower than in other parts of the country (especially thanks to hydroelectric generation), we are less likely to see solar power generation in this region unless the price of solar power (capital costs and the cost per kilowatt-hour) drops much lower.

The problem with states that have no income tax is that they usually have a high-sales tax and a sales tax tends to be regressive (some states tax food and clothing and that makes sales tax very regressive).

    • Which of those states tax food?
    • Which of those states do not tax clothing?

Sales taxes might be regressive, but they do not discourage savings like income taxes do.

I prefer paying sales taxes with no income taxes in the state of Washington. But not everyone likes that system.

Most people in Oregon prefer not paying any sales taxes, but they do have to pay state and local income taxes on top of their federal income taxes.

I would pay more in taxes to the state and local government if I lived and/or worked in Oregon or California.

I pity those states that have HOV lanes -- they're completely empty and unused (relatively speaking) whereas the congestion would be relieved by adding the extra lane.

HOV lanes may not move as many vehicles per hour as any given general purpose (GP) lane, but one HOV lane can (and, in many cases, does) move more people in one hour than three GP lanes. That is true in several places in the states of Washington and California that I know of.
