Since I seem to recall that a kid in elementry school was once suspended (expelled?) for the small crime of making a gun shape out of his hand while trying to play cops and robbers under that school's zero tolerance policy, I don't think many kids would be able to bring this gatling gun shaped item to school. (Sadly, this is not a joke: this really happened)
By the way, zero tolerance and mandatory sentencing rules suck. What ever happened to allowing the elements of the crime dictate the punishment?
If you were to keep burning fuel, you would keep accelerating (assuming an infinite amount of fuel) which anybody will tell you is not a good thing when you eventually want to stop.
Don't see why I should respect you when you think Newton's laws are still absolute. Einstein, as you may recall, debunked your statement by saying even if you keep accelerating, you cannot pass the speed of light. Your acceleration therefore cannot be constant at a constant burn rate, but changes as you start going fast enough for time and space to show the effects of relativity.
Asseveralpostspointedoutin that thread, it is only a matter of time and equipment to crack smart cards. We should also be conserned with how this technology all seems to be heading in the direction of the mark of the beast. Can it really be that long until we have to have an implant of a smart chip like this to buy and sell anything?
When I pay for any real world publication, I feel very confident that a) The stories are accurate and not-repeats (unless there is new information) b) spelling and grammar is near perfect. Until this site decides to run a professional quality publication, the odds of me paying for it are exactly zero.
The saying goes: you get what you pay for. If I pay, I expect to get more. I expect to get professionalism.
I am personally a huge free speech person, and if this were happening in my state, I would join whatever local political group was trying to make sure the bill did not pass.
However, I think it is Georgia's right to do this if they really want to. I am conservative, and conservatives believe that local and state communities, not the federal government, should be in charge of most things, including community standards. I greatly oppose acts like the CDA or COPA because they are mandates from on high that completely ignore the fact that some communities do not want it.
But if Georgia really believes its community does not want the sale of violent video games to minors, and the citizens want that (by not joining groups to oppose it, electing conservative politicians, etc.), then I see absolutely no problem with the state of Georgia enacting this community standard.
It is not as if they are even banning the games (which I think I might still support). They are for sale. Adults can buy them. If parents think their kids are ready, the parents can buy the games for their children. What is the harm? Parents are able to make a choice about what they want their kids exposed to, the community is protected, free speech is protected, and it is a decision made by the local populace for the local populace.
On Slashdot, we often complain how the federal government is doing this or that, and how parents are no longer able to make the call. Here is a situation that should make us all happy. Recognize a good thing when you see it.
I said pretty much the same thing, but was modded down. Of course, I also took the oppertunity to make comments regarding the moderation contriversy, so that might have had something to do with it:)

I suppose "Last word" doesn't actually mean last word. Of course, with the editors saying F*** you to/. users (see the homepage link) or abandoning the concept of for the users/by the users by allowing unlimited editor moderation (see my journal or sig link), I suppose there is no real reason to suspect anything the editors say can be taken to the bank or to trust them.

I am not an anti-EQ nazi or anything...I like computer games, and while EQ isn't my cup of tea, I have friends who like it.
But this is out of control. 77th richest country! If people used all that wasted time, the United States (which is the principle players of EQ) we would have the combined economys of us and Russia (?!)
I think just MAYBE this whole thing has gotten out of control.
Now that you mention it, I remember a time I saw this used! I was watching a live football game that happened to be being aired on two seperate networks (I think one was my college network and the other was a national network). I was flipping between the two games when I noticed a two second delay or so.
It was really wierd, watching a play, then seeing the exact same thing on the other channel. Since it was live, I was trying to figure out what could cause it, and I chalked it off to satalite (which under the circumstances didn't make sense, but it seemed like the only possibility). Perhaps this was what was going on!
I always wondered why Chessmaster and other well known commonly avaliable commercial chess programs don't compete in these competitions. I would think it would provide:
1) Great exposure for your program
2) A great way to motivate your programming staff to work at 100%
3) A way to show you are number 1
And for the programmers, if you acutally win, it would seem one of those great things you can put on a resume.

Mod me down if you like, but I am a slashdot geek that unfortunatly uses Windows and is trying to learn Linux. However, it occured to me if I am making a move to Linux for ethical reasons (I hate Microsoft), then perhaps I should consider BSD. So can anyone point me to any sites or explain to me the differences between BSD and Linux? Such comparison should point to practicality, compatibilty, useability (especially for newbies like me), community, and such. Please help those that wish to convert!

the Earth isn't currently the hottest it's been this millenium, much less the hottest ever.
Hate to disagree, but it is the year 2001, making this millenium currently in its first year. Therefore, the temperatures being recorded now for this year are by definition the hottest of the millenium (and coldest too).
I agree one system will die. I believe it will be Nintendo because of the lack of DVD support. DVD has really come into its own in just the last few months. The amount of promotion of DVD players and such is huge and I have seen players at sub $100 prices. If the kiddies want a gaming system and parents were thinking of getting a DVD player, I would sure as hell kill two birds with one stone. The lack of a DVD player will be Gamecube's undoing. That combined with PS2's backward's compatability (read: loyality, wide game selection) and X-box's marketing, speed, power and DVD capablity should put Gamecube in 3rd place, which will mean its' death IMHO.

I was suprised not to see any comments from either The Electronic Frontier Foundation or The Electronic Privacy Information Center with comments on the debate. Why didn't these normally active groups submit an opinion?
See the wired article about all of this.

Um, congressmen only care about the next two years, and Senators only care about the next six. If you are going to be cynical, at least be accurate!
