here, ill simplify it for you since obviously you didnt get it.
the RIAA had a drop in sales - they sued downloaders
the MPAA had an almost record year, saw how the RIAA achieves these easy profits to recoup from loss due to stupid internal decisions and decided to capitalize in much the same way
the article is clearly about movie sales, downloads and the MPAA, but that quote is merely drawing the connecting line between the similarity/disimilarity of the two organizations and their respective legal recourse.
in the end, it doesnt have anything to do with this or that. what it does have to do with is you - the consumer.
I'm not just bashing Microsoft here, but seriously, if they released something like this with a Linux-based systems, it would still have serious exploitation potential. Are people going to be able to crack it to get all channels? Oder PPV for free?
Longhorn won't be released until Linux has reached a reasonable maturity level on the Desktop and MS has had a chance to carry over the features it deems worthy...
comspiracy...yea, i'm not really serious about it....but it does make you wonder.
i have 50GB of music....this is what was keeping me from buying a portable device.
so, in other words...I would buy this as compared to the cheaper device. I want to be able to take ALL my music with me ALL the time. comparing cost is trivial. if a device doesn't do what i want/need it to do, then its worthless.
I have a few machines from dell, ibm, and compaq that were, when sold, pro-loaded with Windows.
None of the machines run Windows.
I have two home-built machines that run Linux.
People that use this as a way around the MS tax are bad, sure...but I bet there's people like me, that own machines that have been sold inclusive of the tax, but no longer for MS software (for so many damn fine reasons).
From a religious standpoint, things seem to be coming to a close.
Revelations says to look at nature, the signs will be there. I'm not saying the world is going to end tomorrow, but looking at the world around us, we seem to have at least started the downwards spiral.
the crime doesn't exist until some follish law is passed into play.
sure, you could argue that there would be law under religious convitions, but there's supposed to be a seperation of church and state, right?
What I want to see is the big celebrities, politicians, and other big-wigs in our society succombing to the same laws and penalties as your average joe schmoe.
until then, why even have a law in the books in the first place?
so are you saying you have cheap , junky wireless equipment, or are you just showing how ignorant you are?
i have both an 802.11b and a seperate 802.11g wireless network in my house - WEP being enabled does not decrease the range in either scenario.
I also use various brands of access points where I work - the business end of an organization that owns and operates about 10 hospitals. That's 2 buildings, 13 floors in each.\\
I would say my experience outweighs your 'home network setting.'
I'm in the same boat as you - switched to linux on my desktop about 6 months ago, getting rid of a dual boot scenario. I don't really play games, but any that I'm interested in are for the most part available. Even running an ATI card in my main machine, I'm still very satisfied with the overall experience. Keeping on topic - SuSE 9.1 autodetected and installed my sony memory stick usb mouse. Also, during the install, it detected and configured my d-link 802.11g pci networking card.
That and my server runs linux as well.
SuSE 9.1 on my desktop and SuSE Enterprise Server 8 on my other machine - currently being tested before going live.
but as the parent of your post pointed out, this is a rarity.
sure, sometimes i make a post late into the release of an article, sometimes get modded up...but more often than not, it never happens.
do i have nothing good to say? not up to me.
but most* moderators just browse through and mod quickly.
Whenever I have mod points, I use them on older articles...I may one to have bestowed mod points upon you late after an article has been forgotten about. heck, i know that sometimes I make a late post to an article...I bet most* of the time it doesn't even get read.
as far as spelling goes - it takes a lot away from a blog/essay when things are misspelled and bad grammer is used. mostly, credibility.
and i know slashdot suggest you browse at -1 when moderating...do you think most* people change their settings? probably not.
*most used lightly - obviously there are always exceptions to the rule.
I'm at my parents house....I've had them using it since Firebird.7
They loved it from the go. I'm home visiting for the weekend for a wedding and family reunion. I couldn't believe it - my parents had not only been using firefox, but had suggested it to friends as well. These people are your text-book definition of the average user, but were still pleased with the switch.
Just goes to show you - if a better product exists, it will start to show up places you don't expect.
to the grandparent, sorry if you feel a hit to your geek image because "regular" users are switching.
Looks like you might have to make the switch to linux;oP
This is insightful? Yea...police officers NEVER profile people.
I've never been harassed for having a Phish sticker on my car...oh wait, I have...while broken down on the side of the road - waiting for a tow truck, I wasn't even asked if I needed help. Instead I was badgered and berated, as well as illegally searched for about a half hour about how they knew I was in possession of marijuana. Once they finally realized I didn't have any illegal substances, they sped off in their car, leaving me still stranded and still never offered assistance.
Oh yea - I'm an Eagle Scout as well as an Assistant Scoutmaster.
that would be helpfull for so many slashdotters....
not only does it free up that hand, but your mind automagically goes to the proper pr0n page...
dude, think about it, they wont sue the end-user...they'll sue the person that built the end-users pc and sold them the pirated OS
sheesh, thought that was clear as day.
here, ill simplify it for you since obviously you didnt get it.

dude, it's pimp...how can it not be a kick-ass product?
all-day long
I can't wait for my television to Blue Screen.
Oh, what public service anouncement?
What exploits....yikes.
I'm not just bashing Microsoft here, but seriously, if they released something like this with a Linux-based systems, it would still have serious exploitation potential. Are people going to be able to crack it to get all channels? Oder PPV for free?
it takes balls to do something like that.
Longhorn won't be released until Linux has reached a reasonable maturity level on the Desktop and MS has had a chance to carry over the features it deems worthy...

but...but...i cant do anything without a GUI!!!
heh
why would the distance the device is capable of change by disabling security?
yes, your wireless get slower when you enable WEP....but it doesn't decrease the distance that the devices function at.
how did you get insightful for that comment?
encryption takes up bandwidth, shared with your data.
nothing to do with distance.
for god sakes - give this man mod points, i had to clean my screen, for i spat coffee all over it
tv out anyone?
fuckin' bastards....
i'll be sure to avoid anything that has this in it until it's easily bypassed.
of course, given past techniques, that shouldn't be too damn long...
someone's probably already hatching a plan..

Out of curiosity - what distro are you running?
and i love programming basic 13 years ago when i was 10
it's just a novelty now.
if this system is cheap enough, and targetted properly toward the people that 'know' atari...it will be enough.
wonder what level of hardware they'll have, as well as the hackability...

yes, i didn't capitalize properly - oh well.
bah, at least go for SuSE
ill send you a dvd of SuSE pro 9.1
let one of the people who makes decisions install it on their pc, and then go from there.
note: i've been using SuSE since 6.0 and have become very very fond of it.
I'm at my parents house....I've had them using it since Firebird .7
